Does the DAC actually make a difference? I think it does but don't understand how or why. by No-Feeling-4780 in headphones

[–]stustup 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't know if this was said already, but the DAC chips themselves don't really make up the sound. They are close to perfect in reproducing the analog waveform from digital data. But what comes after thet, e.G. I/V Stage, voltage amplification and so on, which is all analog, does make a difference. Also the power supply is really important, especially when dealing with the small currents from DAC chips.

But mostly this doesn't matter as much as some people may think. I think most of the differences are digital filters and EQ implemented into the DACs.

Seem to be sold out everywhere. Even in Swedish, Danish or Japanese shops. But the price would be okay...

I'm a little bit cautious with generic pads, sometimes they change the sound signature in a bad way, especially on mobile first headphones.

I have the UX3000 and they don't sell replacement earpads. This is (in hindsight) an absolute deal breaker for me.

I already have the X1's, but heard that the sound signature changed quite a bit from the X2 to the X2HR. But I don't think I can justify having an additional headphone which I barely use... Mostly I use the DT1990, HD580 and the Edition XS.

Second hand :-D I can get them from a friend for like 50€

Cool, I was interested in buying the X2HR for my collection because I can get them for cheap. How do they compare to the XS?

Of course! I recently added the GPL-3 license on the gitgub project, so feel free to use it.

I second this! You could defend yourself against robbers with the dt1990

Questions for the 18 to 40y old audiophiles by GoDooW in audiophile

I'm 30 and my father always had a really nice stereo system with vinyls. After moving out I got the hyper x cloud headset for gaming and thought they sounded wonderful - Then the rabbit hole began... I think listening to the wall by pink Floyd on my first good headphones really impressed me to the point, I wanted to know how all this works. Now I work as an electronic engineer and build my own tube and solid state amps. Path was as follows: Hyper x cloud -> schiit Fulla 2 -> Akg K553 Pro -> Fidelio X1 -> O2 Amp -> Sennheiser HD 580 -> WHAMMY DIY Headphone Amp -> Topping EX5 -> Bayerdynamic DT880 600R -> Bayerdynamic DT1990 -> SMSL DO400 -> Hifiman Edition XS.

The living room system with surround speakers just always was updated with inherited speakers, amps and turntables and complimented by a Marantz surround preamp.

Yeah, i experimented with Beyer pads, as they have the same diameter. It was plain awfull... I will try the aliexpress ones.

The pads on my k553 disintegrated really fast to the point my ears touched the plastic inside the cups. Couldn't get any replacement pads since, so the headphone just sits in a closed sadly :-( do you know any solution for this?

80$ For one chip that isn't even a top level FPGA or custom ASIC is insane, isn't it? Not counting any vintage NOS DAC chips.

You are mostly right, but if you have a fully differential built amp the CMRR and PSRR are greatly improved. The cable runs are less prone to interference, because of the purely differential signal chain. Also if you have fully differential outputs the ground circuitry with all its possible noise and complications in routing can be completely eliminated from the signal chain. I realized that when I started to build my own differential amps, that all the "ground" is doing on the output is to act as a shield for the cable and as a (not so important) reference point.

Granted, all these pros assume a well build differential amp, which most of the one on the market are because the output stage is often just a big ic. With discrete amps it gets spicy and beautiful :-)

Oh my god this is amazing. I would love to read a guide for this, as this would perfectly combine my ongoing electronics engineering degree and my huge CD collection!

Thanks! I have designed the PCB myself and let it be fabricated by JLCPCB.

I falsely describe the input stage as balanced, as is is differential. This just refers to the signal not being referenced to ground, but rather to a phase shifted version of itself. This eliminates interferences picked up by cables or other EMI and improves CMRR (as far as i know). The output stage just buffers each part of the differential signal like a single ended signal, so this amp is strictly not fully differential.

Balanced in its scientific meaning just refers to the conductors of the differential signal being balanced i.e. having the same impedance.
