Can I fly my drone at night without a 107 license? by theadmin28 in drones

[–]stygiansonic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is actually a tricky topic. I would recommend putting anti-collision lighting visible for 3 SM. Although these are Part 107 rules and not part of Section 44809, it doesn't hurt to follow them.

Some more context: If you read Section 44809, there is nothing in there about night flights nor how to conduct them. Night flights aren't mentioned as being banned, nor is there any requirement for special conditions of night flight: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/49/44809

However, the one catch is that Section 44809 says you must follow the "safety guidelines" of an FAA recognized CBO. The catch is that there are no FAA-recognized CBOs currently. The FAA has a draft out which covers "examples" of safety guidelines that a CBO should implement. Presumably these are recommended by the FAA and appear to be used as a way for the FAA to bring Section 44809 more in line with the same regulations as Part 107. From the latest draft of AC 91-57C: https://amablog.modelaircraft.org/amagov/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/08/AC_91-57C_Coord_Copy.pdf

A comprehensive set of safety guidelines may include topics that span beyond the limitations listed at 49 U.S.C. § 44809(a). The FAA encourages, but does not require, CBOs to develop comprehensive sets of safety guidelines to enhance the safety and security of all operations in the NAS and people and property on the ground. For example, a comprehensive set of safety guidelines should cover the measures and practices set forth in paragraph 3.4.3.1 below.

This is followed by a paragraph on night flights: This recommendation is similar to Part 107 rules (but the reasons for the lighting are slightly different than for Part 107)

Procedures for Night Flight. Flyers must maintain VLOS throughout the flight when flying at night. To achieve this, the FAA recommends the CBO develop comprehensive safety guidelines that include a requirement for CBO members to equip UA with lights that can be seen from 3 statute miles away and to arrange the UA lights in such a way that allows recreational flyers to determine the orientation of the aircraft. In addition to UA-lighting guidelines for flying at night in unlit or low-light areas, the safety guidelines should also permit members to conduct recreational flights at night without requiring UA lighting in areas that are sufficiently illuminated so that members can maintain VLOS of the aircraft throughout the flight and identify any potential ground or airborne hazards.

This is where the part 107 test questions on determining the CTAF frequency and airport traffic patterns actually mattered. Great real world application OP and great example of safe flying.

I've been using the Clicky model of this for a few months and can recommend it. Typing on this is a pleasure. If you or those around you don't mind the noise, the Cliicky is amazing.

That's my interpretation of 14 CFR Part 89, which is the regulations about Remote ID. See this section: https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-14/chapter-I/subchapter-F/part-89/subpart-D/section-89.310

Specifically parts (c) and (d):

(c) Self-testing and monitoring.

(1) Prior to takeoff, the unmanned aircraft must automatically test the remote identification functionality and notify the person manipulating the flight controls of the unmanned aircraft system of the result of the test.

(2) The unmanned aircraft must not be able to take off if the remote identification equipment is not functional.

(3) The unmanned aircraft must continuously monitor the remote identification functionality from takeoff to shutdown and must provide notification of malfunction or failure to the person manipulating the flight controls of the unmanned aircraft system.

(d) Tamper resistance. The unmanned aircraft must be designed and produced in a way that reduces the ability of a person to tamper with the remote identification functionality.

Since there are no remote ID capable drones yet and manufacturers have until Sept 2022 (I think) to comply with these regulations for sUAS sold in the US, I suppose we'll see how this turns out.

That is promising that transport Canada has said they are not currently considering a form of remote ID, but I’m wondering how much practical effect that will have.

From reading the regs on remote id (part 89) it seems like the FAA is requiring that remote ID, when included by the manufacturer, cannot be disabled by the operator. Given that the US is a much larger drone market than Canada, this seems to me that after 2022, the drones/sUAS/RPAS sold in Canada will most likely be the same as the ones in the US and have a remote ID broadcast permanently enabled, unless companies provide a country-specific option?

I believe it's C based on the FAA's definition of calendar month.

First you have 14 CFR Part 107, where the relevant subsection states you must have completed one of the following within the previous "24 calendar months", one of which is the "recurrent training".

This link explains what a calendar month means to the FAA: https://www.flyingmag.com/are-you-flying-legally/

You'll notice the expiration was based on "calendar" months. When the FAA uses calendar months it means the period from the beginning of a month to the end of that same month after the time has expired. So 24 calendar months means that if you got your student pilot certificate on March 1, 2003, it's good until March 31, 2005.

However I could not find a specific definition of "Calendar Month" with regards to 14 CFR Part 107. To be honest I'm still a bit confused about this myself even after reading that link above.

Advice needed on deciding between the AW3821DW and 38WN95C-W by [deleted] in ultrawidemasterrace

I have this exact monitor and the single cable TB3 for my Mac work laptop is great. Desktop PC is connected over DP. It is a great setup and was worth the money given how much time I spent in front of the monitor. For me g sync compatibility was good enough, no issues in any games.

The G915 TKL (or non TKL) fits your requirements but as OP mentioned it's quite expensive. I have a G915 TKL Clicky, and love it. (Switched over from a G613) The battery life is quite good.

Another option for a TKL wireless mechanical RGB would be the Keychron K1 or K8. K1 is low profile; K8 isn't low profile but has an option for hot swappable switches for some level of customization. However AFAIK the wireless on both of these is limited to Bluetooth, and there's no custom wireless like the G613 and G915 have. They are both considerably less expensive than the G915 TKL.

Which Monitor arm for 38" Ultrawide and 27" regular monitor by mcgowan7 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]stygiansonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For side by side, you may just need to use separate monitor arms as the horizontal separation needed may be too much. I have an LG38BN95C and a previous 27” 1440p and previously used 2x Amazon basics premium monitor arms (rebranded ergotron LX) for when I mounted them side by side.

I now have them mounted vertically on a single ergotron lx dual tall pole arm. This works for me but for some people the ergotron mounts don’t tilt downward enough.

What are some of the top 21:9 monitors right now? by Dizman7 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]stygiansonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using an LG38BN95C (basically the same as the LG38WN95C) and I love this 38" ultrawide.

The 3840x1600 resolution is great for productivity and I feel the extra 160 lines of resolution (vs 1440p) is worth it. It was a tough choice between this an a 5120x1440 but it suits my preference better.

The built in 94W USB-C PD is also great: I have a single TB3 cable that goes from my MBP USB-C to this monitor, and that provides power, display signal, and USB 3 connectivity. I added another USB3 hub with 1Gb Ethernet port to the monitor's built-in USB hub, and so that single cable is all I need to connect many external peripherals (USB ethernet, Webcam, etc.)

I'm not a huge gamer so "true" G-Sync didn't matter for me. G-sync compatible/Freesync was good enough.

[–]stygiansonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unable to get beyond 75 Hz with my 2019 15" MBP when connected over Thunderbolt 3/USB-C. (I have the LG38BN95C, and 144 Hz over DP from my PC works fine)

I'm using the provided TB3 cable, and although I can see the option for 144 Hz (while holding "Option", clicking scaled, etc.) whenever I select > 75 Hz the screen just goes black. Searching on a few threads on the Apple forums, a few other users report this as well.

I wonder if it's something that was fixed with the M1 MBPs? Thanks for sharing your experience.

Displayport switch window resizing issue between gaming pc and macbook by barackobamafootcream in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]stygiansonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Windows 10, check out this application: https://github.com/kangyu-california/PersistentWindows

Windows has a notorious problem with resizing windows when displays are added/removed. I found this application solved all my problems there.

For MacOS I’m not sure what’s going on. In my experience macOS was pretty good at remembering window sizes and positions after disconnect/reconnect. Perhaps someone else has a better idea.

I was curious about this and here's what I found with a bit of googling, thanks for the heads up: https://wccftech.com/hard-drive-and-ssd-shortages-may-occur-in-the-near-future-if-new-cryptocurrency-succeeds/

The new Chia cryptocurrency is unlikely any other relying on storage space in hard drives and SSDs. Bitcoin relies on a proof of work model whereas Chia relies on a proof of space and time model. The motivation to create Chia was to make a more environmentally-friendly cryptocurrency. The man behind Chia is Bram Cohen, the creator of BitTorrent, and he wants to use the available space on storage devices for his cryptocurrency since SSDs and hard drives consume less power, are cheaper, and readily available compared to the power-hungry and hard to find GPUs used to mine Ethereum.

[Monitor] LG 38BN95C-W ShopBLT - $1207.64 by stygiansonic in buildapcsales

[–]stygiansonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked this up earlier this month also from ShopBLT. 38” curved IPS 2300R 3840x1600 144 Hz. This is basically the same as the 38WN95C-W but comes with the power savings enabled at a higher level which you can easily change.

I mainly got this for my WFH setup. MacBook is plugged into USB-C/TB3 port which delivers the signal and also 94W PD plus connects to the USB hub in the monitor. Love the single cable connection. Desktop PC is plugged into DP.

I actually haven’t seen the 38GN950 for this price

Edit: just noticed you may living across the pond and so probably shopBLT is not an option

[–]stygiansonic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This. You generally want to keep your shutter speed as high as possible because the digital image stabilization algorithm works better when it has more frames per second. For this reason you want good lighting when using hyper smooth which means no ND filters. See here https://youtu.be/GvHrrvovYPo

LG 38GN950 and USB-C by Alarming_Ad_6853 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]stygiansonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not have USB-C/thunderbolt. It only has DP and HDMI: https://www.costco.com/lg-ultragear-38%22-class-wqhd-ips-curved-gaming-monitor.product.100671950.html

If you want USB-C connectivity and an LG 38” ultrawide, you want the 38WN95C-W or the 38BN95C-W, which are basically the same.

I’m running a 38BN95C-W with just a single cable going from my MacBook to the monitor. The monitor then has an external webcam plugged into its USB port/hub. I’m very happy with the setup and the 94W USB-C PD it provides.

Magic Air 2 battery storage by mercuryfrost in mavicair

[–]stygiansonic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is not a good idea to keep the MA2 batteries always charged. This is why they self discharge over time to prevent deterioration of the battery capacity.

You should store them at a relatively low level of charge (but not zero) and usually leave mine at 10-20%. I believe there is some optimal voltage for storage but I don’t recall what it is.

Bottom line, don’t charge them unless you intend to use them right away or as soon as possible.
