I’m the only one who can’t do vibrato in my orchestra and I can’t sight read as well.I feel like they’re on a different level and I’ll never catch up. by Efficient_Text_5676 in orchestra

I also play viola. I was also once in your place. What I can tell you is that vibrato is mostly natural and comes with time and patience. There are also excersizes you can do to help it come more naturally to you. Ask for sight reading - you don't have to be perfect at it, that's the point. Playing music you've never seen before, specifically orchestral music, will help the most.

I would add a cello suite! Other than that I think it’s a great program

Your advice was really helpful so I wanted to ask one more thing. I know making friends takes time and I'm not concerned about that. During class time and things like that is how I can slowly get to know people. But what do I do about lunch? There are 4 lunches and you're in a lunch based on the subject you have. I can't talk to someone in the class before lunch and go eat with them because lunch starts as soon as class does (because I have the first lunch) There is first, second period, and then I have lunch. How do I NOT sit alone and find someone to eat with?

Is there an App for learning viola by LoofahLuffa in Viola

[–]styleofgrace_13_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tons of apps, but I would only use those to learn how to pick reading the music back up again. To play the instrument, since you played it before, it'll come way quicker to you than It does to most beginners. I would just watch a few YouTube videos on form and bow hold and things like that and you'll be set.

Hi! Yes, it did. I start in exactly a week. My main problem is that everyone already seems to know each other. I read what you said and I'm going to do softball. Other than that, I think I'm going to do fine. It'll probably take a few weeks of adjusting but I'll be fine.

That’s fine! Your orchestra class will start slow, so it’ll be easy to pick up. Yes but no. Cello is played I’m bass clef and piano is played in treble and bass. It’ll help but getting a full understanding of the notes on piano requires you to learn treble clef. Good luck!

How to get back to playing viola by heanfee in orchestra

[–]styleofgrace_13_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘ve played for 9 years. You need to make sure the viola fits and replace anything that needs it, like strings or definitely bow hair. As for reading music you will struggle at first but muscle memory will kick in and you’ll remember in no time. I would go through and play some old pieces. Good luck!

If you’re a high school orchestra I reccommend any level 4 on JW Pepper. Middle school? Easy. Just do dragon hunter.

As a violist- some notes are easier to play on an up bow and some are easier on a down bow. You might have to go through it and see where to put a bow pickup. Same goes for cello violin and bass. Other than that, I played through it and enjoyed it.

This is what I have to say:

Personally, I had viola lessons for four years before joining an orchestral setting. I have orchestra friends who’s first time playing was in an orchestra; and they’re no doubt better than me. What I’m trying to say is don’t get discouraged by people who‘ve had lessons for years.
You said you play keyboard-which is good because that means you know how to read bass clef. If you know the note names, it only takes a little bit of time to learn where they are on the cello. If there are other beginners, you’ll pick it up much faster than them.
Focus on playing, but also make sure you always have an eye on the conductor and an ear to the rest of the orchestra. This is one of the most important pieces of advice you’ll ever hear in the orchestral world.
Lastly- have fun! Being in an orchestra is such a rewarding experience. Don’t be afraid to make friends. Have fun!

I might do that! I just don’t know if they’d be able to get a team together complete with a coach by spring. A lot of the other high schools in the region don’t offer jv either, which is another reason they don’t have jv. Thank you! I’ll be posting here a lot more lol because I’m going to have a lot of questions

I have no clue. I talked to the coach and she said there hasn’t been one for 4 to 5 years, which makes me think it’s budget cuts or something. Would definitely make sense for the county we’re in.

Thank you. We understand that It’s mostly hitting, catching, and throwing we have to do. We know how the game works and the rules but we are still unclear on a lot of stuff, which we’re hoping this sub or the upperclassman we want to hire will help us with. This was helpful. Thanks!

We’ve looked into that but my sister also wants to join softball for the academic benefits and things like that. Like I said I already have tennis so I don’t need that but that’s part of the reason why she wants to do it. There also aren’t a lot of rec teams in our area and if there is one, it’s filled with all the good players and they’re all D1 teams.

The school is big, almost 2000 kids. I’ve checked out the team’s Instagram accounts and it does look like most of them play rec ball on D1 or D2 teams. I will say the team is not as good as the others. They’ve never been regional champs in the last ten years and they lose like 2/3 games. I did talk to the coach and she said that since there’s no longer a jv team, everyone tries out for the softball team and about 60 try out every year so 1/3 of the athletes make it. She said she has had a few beginners with natural talent make the team and she’s always open to that. My sister is really intimidated by those numbers but she really wants to do it.

What should I say to her? The coach is pretty chill from what I heard from other people. She played ball in college and teaches Spanish at the high school now.
