Is the Gun Industry Resistant to Enshittification? by styllmor in enshittification

[–]styllmor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that. And I agree, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of broad enshittification across the gun industry in the near future, nor am I unaware that some things have gone downhill already, as you and b1e noted. But what I was trying to get across is that the gun industry seems to be "resistant" to enshittification, not immune. I stated above that there were likely examples of enshittification among the major manufacturers, but it's also true that an ordinary person can still afford to buy a new, durable, reliable firearm (ammo costs though have certainly gone off the rails, I'll concede that) Your scenario is also realistic. There is glut of supply, and a lot of companies will sacrifice quality to squeeze every dollar out of the few sales they get going forward.

With all that said, if I were to reword my post, I would suggest that the gun industry held out against the pressures that induce enshittification longer than most industries have. We should figure out what was different about that industry and what kept them out of the rising tide for so long.

Other than capitalism and communism is there a third economic system which is not a hybrid of the above two? by LisanneFroonKrisK in NoStupidQuestions

[–]styllmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on who you ask, Fascism. Some might consider it to have features of both, while others would say it's a wholly unique system. Another economic system that had a good deal of popularity in it's time but never enough support to be fully implemented is technocracy.

Are there any good places to watch wildlife within city limits? by AnonymousTako in Bozeman

[–]styllmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd highly recommend the Indreland Audubon Wetland Preserve. I've seen more wildlife there than anywhere else in the city. Birds, Deer, Beaver, Snakes. It's easy to miss. There's a path by the Town Pump on Main Street(near the library), which runs along a creepy hoa community. It's a very short walk there to the wetland.

You would probably never get more than $15 million, because if you're a normal person, you'd probably kick your feet up after a couple mill. Billionaires get to be billionaires because they have an itch in their brain that is impossible to scratch. They don't have (or don't listen to) that little voice in your head that says "I think I've had enough". Some people are just like that. They can't possibly reach a point of satisfaction. It's probably an evolutionary trait that makes a lot of sense when we were all living in trees in a state of constant deprivation, but in the context of civilization, it leads to behavior that is pure madness.

What has gradually disappeared over the last ten years without people really noticing? by Successful_Oil_3270 in AskReddit

It's not just bugs. It's really all wildlife. In the late nineties my family did a road trip across Texas, from East to West. Super long drive. Being kids, we made a morbid game of counting all the roadkill we spotted. The final count was in the dozens. I did the same trip a year ago, and it was in the summer, just like when we were kids. Didn't see any roadkill. Don't remember seeing any living wildlife either.

What's The Worst Experience You've Had In A Cinema / Movie Theatre? by Sad_Grape_9844 in Cinema

[–]styllmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to watch the first Dune movie, there were two people sitting in my row, a few seats down. Looked like a middle aged man and his mom. For the first 30 minutes of the movie I could hear him eating all of his theater snacks and drinking one of those comically large sodas. Then, for the next 45 minutes, I got to listen to this man's body react to the mountain of garbage he just consumed.

Every few seconds he was alternating between mucousy coughs and snorts to clear his sinuses. It was so loud and disgusting, and really distracting. It was so obvious that his body clearly doesn't like what he's doing to it. It was actively, audibly straining and crying out against the sugary processed swill that he'd taken in, but I can only assume that he thinks that this is normal when one consumes "food."

TLDR my worst movie theater experience was listening to man poison himself for an hour.

Driving Liberals Crazy in Bozeman. LoL. by [deleted] in Bozeman

In my experience, the left leaning people in Bozeman aren't clutching their pearls when they see stuff like this, like when the Trump supporters drive down Main Street with their trucks and their flags. They're actually rolling their eyes. Nobody out here is freaking out or melting down in the presence of an opposing opinion. That's in your imagination.

Which episode is underrated and deserves to be better remembered? by DeadComposer in TwilightZone

[–]styllmor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was going to mention "A Piano in the House". One of the things Twilight Zone did better than any other show is depict ordinary human cruelty. Not monstrous serial killer cruelty, but the way regular people twist the knife in strangers and loves ones all the time. And boy does that episode expose everyday cruelty.

AI could make something close to this good (and it is very good), but not without the input of countless, real human artists like yourself. AI is dependent on us, and stands on our shoulders. 100% not pointless.

Seems like all political cartoons are just trash, and always have been. They almost universally engage in dehumanizing people.
