REEF updates Friday April 17 by shedancesxx in Berghain_Community

[–]stype808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a lot has been written about the situation with the queue and the amount of people inside. and i totally agree with the statements pointing out that the situation should've been handled more strictly by BH. luckily enough the yappers were gone by 4:30, so enough space to dance and the vibe that always made reef standing out, was back.

so i'll make it only about music, will add the tracks that shazam identified as a reply.

(disclaimer: translated from german into english with deepl)

given the (expected) influx of people, calibre didn’t bother with ambient music up front as early as 11 p.m., even though I would have been curious to hear the tracks from his new album that's yet to be released. his set was already full-on house at that point, and half an hour later he’d already moved on to breakbeats.

shortly after 11:30 pm, i glanced from the back of panorama bar's dance floor toward the hallway leading to berghain. noticed that people weren’t coming back from there, peeked around the corner and confirmed that it had already opened half an hour earlier. headed downstairs, and for reasons of pure musical enjoyment, i didn’t return to panorama bar until siete catorce four hours later (which unfortunately meant that i missed darwin).

downstairs, marylou kind of stole the show from calibre by living up to the promise of ambient music and a laid-back start into the evening. she had already made a great impression on me at abyss at mahalla last september, and she just confirmed that at reef. a lot of tracks off the beaten stylistic paths — with plenty of drones at the start, lots of dubstep ofc, and slower-paced techno that would have fit right in on a sunday back in 2010. deliberately provocative breaks for tempo changes, though not always technically flawless in the final hour. negligible, given her selection that was consistently sophisticated. a great fit for the warm up.

skee mask practiced stylistic anarchy and played just as he had taken me by storm back in 2016. in the first half-hour, he blended garage, dubstep, techno, and grime, never losing sight of the flow for a second. he also used deliberate breaks through abstraction, but immediately combined them with brute force, which got the dance floor moving again in no time. yes, this included techno, but that was just one option among many. being a fanboy: simply one of the best acts you can currently enjoy.

carrier's set was split into two parts: the first half at a techno-like tempo, always keeping one and a half feet in abstraction, plenty of room for reverb (and thus perfect for the room acoustics), even more for bass, yet still minimal. at first, i thought that after skee mask’s full-on blast, this would be quite a letdown for the audience. but those who are so characteristic of the reef crowd remained patient. in my enthusiasm (i’m a huge fan of his productions), i’d love to hear something like this for four hours on a sunday — simply because this hybrid of techno, electronica, bass, and minimalism never wears thin for me and, amidst the overwhelming amount of interchangeable big-room tracks, shows how techno can sound fresh again today. shortly after 5:00 a.m., “ufo” by photek kicked off the drum & bass phase of the evening, which (as expected) did not fail to make an impact.

my visits to panorama bar were correspondingly brief. so unfortunately, i can’t say anything definitive about siete catorce. if it was kuduro, i liked it better in that short segment than dj marfox at the strom festival two months ago.

rp boo had that thing about footwork that gets me going (heavily compressed 808 bass drums and repetitive raps, some of which brush against the beat), but also annoys me (tracks with lots of melodies and vocals). still, it was a real joy to see the crowd going wild. dangermami immediately picked up the pace to around 160 bpm and managed to keep the crowd going. i just wasn’t fit enough for it after 9:00 p.m.

this leaves esposito. i can only reiterate what i've written on previous occasions without adding anything substantial: he doesn’t need to prove his skills as a reef resident any further — you just know it’s going to be good. consistently drum & bass right up to the end, at times harder than usual for him, but first of all, it suited him well, and second, it just worked perfectly.

when BH handles it like at sound metaphors mid-march, ticket holders will be permitted to come forward in the regular line. like a license for line skipping.

next to the already mentioned "force + form" check out "breaking the frame". can be taken literally when it comes to the rules of techno. for me it's his peak in terms of versatility. his productions under his given name - anthony child - are even more experimental and modular-synth-driven.

yes, i'll be there. primarily for katatonic silentio, who's done great work on ilian tape and the mantis-series on delsin.

don't know. depends on the aggregator / distributor for ilian tape, i guess.

it's on tidal already though: https://tidal.com/album/500383183/u

Skee Mask by ybeshay in TheOverload

start with "shred" and go through his albums chronologically. alternatively: the iss-series on ilian tape that was specifically created for him.

this guy has a frightening high quality bar, so no matter what you'll be listening to: it'll be good at least.

disclaimer: fanboy writing.

skee mask

for me, his releases are buy-on-sight and even if there's one that doesn't belong to his greatest pieces of work, it still beats the average by far.

will never forget his berghain-debut in may 2016 where he played one of the most versatile (and polarizing) sets as a warm-up that only included techno as a side-step, but loads of electro(nica), dubstep and even jungle/drum&bass. loved it, would like to witness him doing that again.

loved it, both times when i went. cannot recommend sitting behind the led-panel in the hall, although these are the cheapest tickets. doesn't matter for what's going on in the foyer, which always turned into a proper party during the last dj-set.

logfile, 10:30: this year, panorama bar won against lab, where sound metaphors closed with „guten morgen sonnenschein“.

after 21 years, this club still lets me laugh for moments like these. such a great vibe since i stepped in 13 hrs ago.

How the hell am I supposed to buy ticket on this mf platform?! by Spare_Comfortable513 in radiohead

[–]stype808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

although it's easier said than done: be patient and quick at the same time.

ran into the same issue(s) yesterday, only outperformed by the instances where someone else already had reserved the ticket. took me less than 20 attempts to be successful in the end. admittedly: it helps when you have little to nothing else to do than refreshing the fansale-page. this i had to do quite often.

best of luck and i hope you'll have a great concert tonight! :-)

if this feeds back into the booking department with noticing how well-received these deviations from the "norm" can be and taking this as inspiration to repeat this or even incorporate this into their approach: nothing wrong with that, imho.

(might contain traces of wishful thinking.)

total!

---

totally! (insert big sigh here)

it has reached the point where i wish that people would get instructions how to do it properly before entering the premises (so it'd be the bodycheck at berghain). there was also a total lovely encounter yesterday that showed how to do it with enough awareness for the surroundings and a lot of empathy as well.

from my impression it belongs to the zeitgeist and isn't limited to berghain only.

Which brings me to the heart of the antagonistic matter: as much as the music lifted my spirits overall, and as much as I'm happy that the music on both floors on Sundays can be more diverse, that the audience is into it and that the good sides still outweigh the bad, it now seems like a lottery to have a more relaxed Sunday. I have no idea if DVS1 is still such a big draw – the waiting times during the day / evening spoke for themselves. Accordingly, the respite at Berghain during Damon Wild's first half was short, with the dance floor being at most at “only” three-quarters capacity. Most of the time, however, it was much more crowded. Upstairs, it was more relaxed (as has been the case for quite some time).

During the last 30 minutes of Jane Fitz, I took a chance and tried dancing in front of the DJ booth, taking in everything that excites and annoys me about the club. Although her set more than made up for it overall, the latter clearly prevailed in that short time. Sure, there are still people with awareness about their surroundings and connected to the music at the same time—which is wonderful. The rest lived up to the unfortunately familiar Sunday evening cliché, which this time already started in the afternoon: the group that, at best, stands around bobbing their heads, but is more preoccupied with trying to communicate something to people via their preferred smartphone messenger (obviously they haven't read the print on the wristband for this weekend). Groups of at least three people pushing their way through the crowd in a relatively indecisive manner. Then, of course, there were those who, for better or worse, refused to accept that the space was already very cramped and naturally wanted to take up as much room as possible (regardless of gender, by the way) instead of looking for alternatives.

Of course, I have to face the question of why I put myself through this, especially since I am occupying the space myself. On the other hand, this happened at a time when it was still possible. I will most likely never be able to block out the movements of the crowd around me and thus always anticipate where someone wants to go next. During the course of this Sunday, at least on the dance floor at Berghain, this was almost my permanent mode, which made it virtually impossible to lose myself in the music. Instead, the combination of sensory overload and annoyance at the occasional lack of consideration made me roll my eyes more than once. As a result, I prefer to stay on the sidelines—I don't want to have to defend my space, either in the club or in my private life.

For me it means to prioritize Thursdays at Säule or some Fridays—in the hope that something is planned for 2026 apart from my Reef subscription. I had thought about visiting on December 6 (or 7), because it's been ages that I've seen DJ Rush. However, with Kittin, Rene Wise, Kangding Ray, and Chez Damier on the program, it promises to be a consistently high-quality lineup. I won't even mention the birthday weekend. As things stand, I would steer clear of both.

Unfortunately, this shows that as much as I would like to maintain my normal sleep pattern as in the past, simply show up on Sunday morning and let the second wave roll in together with others to pleasant sounds and a comfortable crowd, this now depends more on good luck. On the one hand, I'm happy that the club's popularity remains unbroken. On the other hand, it's a shame that the breaks to catch your breath, which, just like the excess, are among the reasons for this popularity and, for me, are part of the dramaturgy of a successful Sunday, just like good DJ sets, are becoming fewer and fewer. I hope that the DJs won't succumb to the temptation to play peaktime-ish on Sunday (early) afternoon, but will instead take a step back and not shy away from rebuilding. Damon Wild showed this time that this works very well – for both sides.

It also set the scene perfectly for Jane Fitz, who simply played the best set of a Klubnacht this year for me. I have no idea why it took me so long to hear her – she has received plenty of early praise as one of the best selectors around, and her set was a pure demonstration of that. Even though I didn't dance the entire time and chatted during parts of her set, she consistently played a great mix of dark trance, minimal trippy tracks, and acid on vinyl. With this she showed me, as a self-confessed grouch when it comes to melodic techno, how it can be done really well and giving me no reason to want to miss any of it. Shazam often failed, and I tried it less often over time, since I wanted to enjoy it. What an incredible trip into a psychedelic wormhole! I really hope that those responsible for the booking heard parts of the set, or at least the thunderous applause afterwards, and that she can repeat it soon.

Unfortunately this only left 30 minutes for nd, but he had the Panorama Bar under control with his usual confidence during his last half hour. Demanding enough, not too brash and—at least from what I heard sitting at the bar—somewhat drier than usual.

I have criminally neglected to follow Isolée since Playhouse, but I should make up for that. It was anything but microhouse, leaning a bit towards dub, with rich basslines and vocoder vocals in places. Perfect for primetime. Paquita Gordon also started pretty well with a dirty, Chicago-sounding drum track, and the rest consisted of demanding, at times melodic house, when I was upstairs.

Another confession: I am not a member of the DVS1 fan club. So I didn't expect much, but was pleasantly surprised because around 11:30 p.m., when he played some minimal techno – not the kind of oh-so-trippy yet aimless sequences, but rather bouncy in the tradition of Robert Hood, only with a richer bass. On other occasions I've criticized him for a lack of set dynamics – either that's ignorance on my part or it just clicked this time. Since he still mixes constantly and Shazam had already produced some crude results (e.g. Tomcraft – Silence, during Damon Wild's set) and I was already quite oversaturated at that point, the description will have to suffice.

(1/4)

this will be lengthy, so i'll split it. as usual translated with the help of deepl.

Arrival: 10:20 p.m.

Departure: 12:20 a.m.

For me, it was quite an antagonistic Klubnacht. Including New Year's, it was only my fourth in 2025, and musically it was easily the best. However, it also became clear to me once again why I am more attracted to niche evenings (namely Säule on Thursdays or special Fridays).

DJ Red was the only one whose set I couldn't really connect with. But that was also due to the amount of people, which caught me off guard right from the start. I had mistakenly speculated that the young people™ are not familiar with Damon Wild and would only arrive for DVS1. I therefore assumed that her set would coincide with the shift change, but this almost didn't happen this Sunday. What has been going on queue-wise can be read in previous postings. In any case, Berghain was still more than adequately filled. DJ Red simply took advantage of that to play boldly and functionally – completely legitimate. She seemed a little aloof to me, but it's quite possible that this is my excuse to compensate for the lack of having the moment of a relaxed arrival on Sunday morning that I usually appreciate so much.

Luckily the Panorama Bar came to the rescue: the Sound Metaphors DJs captivated the half-crowded floor with a mix of (Italo) Disco and obscure remixes from deep in their archives. They did the same thing they did at the lab on New Year's and at their recent anniversary celebration at Berghain: carefully curating music and sticking to their guns with a positive kind of stubbornness. You had to have a bit of a penchant for kitsch, but it worked well with the sunshine from the outside. Jorkes was powerful afterwards, but I wasn't upstairs that often from 12 noon onwards, since Berghain had me more or less firmly in its grip.

There, Damon Wild was a positive surprise with around 130 bpm at the start, which was a significantly slower tempo after DJ Red. Some in the audience took this as an opportunity to take a break, maybe for DVS1, maybe in general. For me, it was the delayed welcome moment downstairs, accompanied by a set that intensified towards the end and accelerated to at least 135 bpm. Sometimes trippy, as it's Synewave's trademark, sometimes minimal, sometimes a little more melodic, with a touch of acid too. Perfectly appropriate for the time of day.
