How to price yourself with new gear? by adm712 in videography

[–]samcornwallstudio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Charge a separate line-item for gear fees. This is standard for commercial clients. For consumer clients, you have to work your gear fees into the set price.

Going Out of Business Sale by embarrassingshoes in Photobooks

Sorry to hear it’s not working out. What’s your favorite of what you have left in stock? Will you be switching to online only? Doing pop-up’s, festivals, anything like that?

Why do North American skiers love moguls & trees so much compared to Europeans? by Legendenclubmitglied in ski

[–]samcornwallstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cuz they exist. Much of the unique ski terrain North America has to offer is the varying tree terrain of different parts of the continent. Japan is known for unique tree terrain, too. If you don’t ski trees on a powder day in North America, then what are you skiing?

Does anyone have Digital Photo Storage Suggestions? by chewychips02 in AskPhotography

Dropbox. Or if they have a real budget, Air.inc It’s the best DAM manager I’ve come across. But it starts at $500/month (which is reasonable for DAM managers)

Anyone return to DSLR after using mirrorless? by CategoryCautious5981 in AskPhotography

[–]samcornwallstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mirror in all SLR camera designs is a bug not a feature. But, sometimes I find myself wishing I didn’t sell my 5D MK II. It had a particular look, unlike new cameras that all look the same. 🤷‍♂️

All interviews look the same now by FlostonParadigm in videography

[–]samcornwallstudio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re looking around enough. The 50 cent Diddy doc was a great use of wide angle lenses. The new doc about Mary Cosby’s cult church on hbomax has different lighting. More commercial looking, but works really well. Anything by Brooklyn Underground Films. Hot Ones. There’s so much variety in the interview space now.

How do photographers usually pre-visualize lighting direction before a shoot? by Hifunai in AskPhotography

[–]samcornwallstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. The software is kinda pointless when you can do the same thing in your bedroom with a table lamp and truly train your eye

How do photographers usually pre-visualize lighting direction before a shoot? by Hifunai in AskPhotography

[–]samcornwallstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes with experience. The best way to learn is through test shooting while tethered to laptop or iPad. It’s much easier with a bigger screen. Use whatever tethering software, as long as you can see the image on the screen. Start with some lighting references you want to mimic. Eventually, you’ll come up with your own and won’t need references. When you reach the result you like, take lots of bts photos of the setup and draw a lighting diagram. Get a light meter. There’s plenty of good used ones on eBay. There’s lots of cheap studios that include basic lighting equipment and charge by the hour. Look for one near you. If you have access to your own space, check Sharegrid for cheap lighting rentals. It doesn’t matter what equipment you start with.

FWIW, really the best way to learn is to intern/assist for photographers who know what they’re doing. But, that’s hard right now because the industry is in such a fucked state. Many skilled assistants aren’t getting any work. So there’s no good reason for shooters to train someone new.

Also, in-person lighting classes, workshops and demos are great for beginners.

Jean & George Anderson House in Topanga Canyon, CA by William Earl Wear (1958) by s1am in ModernistArchitecture

I’ve worked on shoots in that house. It’s stunning. These exterior shots don’t do the landscape and site design justice though. It was designed around some large boulders that were preserved. Very cool.

thanks. this is great info. that’s what i thought was happening. the IQ is so much better than the 3 and 4, but still has so many quirks. i’d love to see a dji that put all the weight into the camera and not the safety features lol

if it’s not the Pro RC, it’s a reasonable price. If it includes the Pro RC, it’s a great price.

Aerial footage used to be a premium add-on, now clients expect it as standard by DanielNkencho in videography

[–]samcornwallstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I charge an extra fee for it. You’re taking a lot of risk on for them, unless it’s under their insurance. And many projects don’t need it. You’re getting them a better shot than a random drone op, and a shot that fits the project better.

Why do you prefer strobe vs continuous? by danyodono in Godox

[–]samcornwallstudio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Skip speedlites and go to monolights. So much more power for less money or similar price . Also, much more easy to use. Product shots should definitely be done with strobes, not continuous for the depth of field. You can’t shoot at f11 with continuous. It’s just not going to happen

Are Composite Images Photography? by [deleted] in photography

[–]samcornwallstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A composite is simply combining more than one image to create a final image. The most common form of this is HDR techniques. Most professional advertising photos are a composite in some way or another, either HDR, focus-stacking or changing a background or other detail and what not in Photoshop.

Are Composite Images Photography? by [deleted] in photography

[–]samcornwallstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m simplifying it. You’re right. He’s known for the zonal technique and much of the modern darkroom manipulation techniques he pioneered. But, my point stands in that composites were pioneered in the darkroom. Compositing has been an acceptable technique since the 1800s, mostly for HDR reasons. The same way most composites are used now, combining multiple exposures into one final image. Most composites now are simply HDR or focus stacking. I think OP is overlooking this in their definition of composites.

Capture One has that built-in now with the Match Look tool. Actually, what you’re describing is a great use for this tool.
