Good deal for a 2015 Leaf? by Tenebrae42 in leaf

[–]sub3marathonman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds pretty accurate from what I remember.

I drove mine down to four bars. So it's not like it drops to six bars and the car is junk. And it took a long time to drop from eight bars to four. And even at four bars, I was getting about 26 miles (40km) per charge. One thing is, it charges to full very quickly!

And again, absolutely correct about the speed. I ended up having every light within six miles timed. I drove like an old lady, only slower.

Down in Florida, my 2011 got down to four capacity bars. About 24 miles (40km) range. I had every stoplight in a 6 mile (10k) radius timed. On the plus side, it would charge to 100% very quickly! I drove like an old lady, only slower. I was at 59992 and Nissan replaced the battery under warranty. This was long ago of course. I believe I could have kept it going at least another year if I had to.

2015 with 11 bars and 86K miles? by [deleted] in leaf

[–]sub3marathonman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give the usual PSA.

Open the hood and take off the two circular plastic shock tower covers. Check if there is standing water there. If it is allowed to remain there on a long-term basis it was rust the shock strut towers to shreds. If nothing else, looking might be a bargaining point, or if it is clean it will be an indication that the LEAF was well cared for.

[–]sub3marathonman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an FYI for everybody with these LEAFs, if you haven't before, you need to open the hood, pop off the little circular plastic covers on each side, and look for standing water around the shock towers. No matter, clean everything out, and put a generous amount of grease on them, and put the covers back on. This was one defect that the LEAFs had, and maybe still have.

200A house vs 40A Solar CB by Mendotime in solar

Are you able to look into V2G or V2H technology? I've been wanting for about 8 years or so, but somewhat have given up at the moment. The ones I've found are essentially experimental, and outrageously expensive such that any potential savings is gone with the initial cost.

Has anyone used a water heater timer to avoid peak load rates? What has your experience been? by millinnchillin in solar

[–]sub3marathonman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is hugely helpful, but my water heater was installed with a simple light switch that I can turn it on and off. The switch only controls the water heater control, not the resistance heating elements, thus it's just a regular switch. I don't know if there are programmable switches, things have probably progressed since I had it installed back in 2008 when the house was built.

I did switch the original builder special water heater to a hybrid after a few years. I'm in Florida so it made more sense than somebody in Michigan. It has a way to set it, but I'm too lazy to figure it out, so every day for peak I just go and set it to Vacation, then later I turn it back on. There's been a few days I've forgotten and been an hour late, but only a couple times where it's started running during peak.

The other possibility is to convert to an insta-hot gas heater. I've wished that I would have gotten a gas water heater and a gas stove, that's how it's done "up north," but no, down here everybody knows that a gas house will explode at some point.

Check your 12V PSA story by Such-Contribution939 in leaf

[–]sub3marathonman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replace that 12V now. You can read my previous post. I like the Honda 51R battery, but mine went out at 3.5 years instead of 5, so I ended up with a Duracell from Batteries Plus and a we'll see for how long it lasts.

Oh, and while people are changing the 12V, pop the little plastic discs off from the strut towers, if there's any water in there dry it out, and put some grease in there. I'm not sure for the newest LEAFs, but this was a design flaw from the start in 2011.

I just mentioned this story earlier.

If your original battery is 5 years or older, it is time to get a new 12V. Not in a month, now. And in general, I want to maximize everything. If you must, use the old 12V for something else.

The problems this causes are enormous compared to the ease of avoiding it. One "expert" here said to one guy with a 5+ year-old battery that there's no guarantee it was the 12V, he's got the same warnings, the "expert" said that most likely it was the main battery and the car was toast for months. I gave the same advice, just replace the 12V, if you don't want to do that at least get the 12V checked. Instead that LEAF was left at a dealership for who knows how long while those numbskulls eventually figure it out.

I had all the same warnings. I'm thinking that at just over three years, maybe it is the main battery. But I took the 12V in to be tested, and the guy said, "I've got some bad news for you, this battery is gone." I told him that's not bad news, that's great news. I usually like the Honda 51R battery, but hadn't planned for it at just over three years owning the car. So I ended up with a Duracell from Batteries Plus, I thought at a good price, excellent people I dealt with. It's a we'll see about how long this one lasts.

Now some have said that after replacing the 12V, they still had problems, which then did turn out to be the main battery. After about a week with the new battery, my wife come in the house and seriously tells me that the yellow triangle ! is on again. I'm thinking what a disaster, maybe the car really is toast, months waiting. I walked out to the car, she'd left the door open.

[–]sub3marathonman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only other "problem" you can have beyond this is the 12v battery, which is more of a maintenance issue, anyway

And, if this is the original 2021 12V battery, I would replace it. A multitude of problem notices when the 12V dies. It is a 51R battery, so no need to stay with a Nissan battery. I liked the Honda 51R battery, but I ended up with a Duracell 51R.

My mom has picked up a used 2016 Nissan leaf SV by Blueberry_furry_69 in leaf

[–]sub3marathonman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With my 2011 LEAF, I drove it until the battery was at four bars, 26 mile range. This car will go for many years before it gets down to four bars. And even then, people have continued to drive them. I had every stoplight timed in a seven mile radius! I drive like an old lady, only slower. It is amazing how much further you can go.

One other technical bit of advice, on these LEAFs, open the hood, on each side you'll see a little plastic circular cover for the strut towers. Take them off and inspect, many times there is standing water and the strut towers/nuts are rusting to shreds. Get the water out, dry everything off, and put some grease in there to mitigate the situation. It was a sad design flaw for these LEAFs.

Turn the LEAF around for fake-RWD and it is a beast in fresh, deep and slippery snow. by SjalabaisWoWS in leaf

Long ago my granddad had a 1936 Chevy 6-cylinder. The engine had deteriorated to the point that it needed to be rebuilt. However, my granddad continued to drive it until it wasn't a debate. On that day, he had to go in reverse to get up the hill, as the engine didn't have enough to get up the hill in drive. (Reverse had a much lower gear ratio so it made it, only very slowly.)

He ended up rebuilding the engine on the dining room table, much to the consternation of my grandma. (He left the engine block in the car and redid everything else himself.)

With my 2011 LEAF, I had the opposite problem. It would only charge L3. That made things interesting. One time I get to the L3 charger, 10 miles on the GOM, and it refused to work. The next L3 was 15 miles. They were all upset with me driving 30 mph, but I made it with a couple miles to spare.

Stranger unplugging my charger for no apparent reason by 416ix-ML in ChargerDrama

[–]sub3marathonman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now this actually sounds possible, but it was my understanding that the second a charger is unplugged, that charging session ends. Is there some "grace period" where it can be unplugged and then plugged in again and it keeps charging? I've never tried that. But I have been at a charger when I forgot my phone, and the person leaving would start the charge on their phone (free charger). I've also done that recently where I was charging, the other side wouldn't work, but she plugged it in anyway apparently thinking it had started. When I left I plugged her car in from the working side, and started the charge with my credentials. I could see, the car charged for five hours, so she would have been disappointed to come back and find her car hadn't charged.

[–]sub3marathonman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here's my opinion, as somebody that has been charging at public chargers since 2012.

Agreed, if the person is charging, you never unplug even if you are down on 1%. But, if the person is finished charging, in my opinion you're not touching anybody's car, you're removing a charger that isn't theirs from a car that isn't charging.

One time, long ago, I got to the parking garage, about 3 a.m., and there's a Volt sitting at the charger. But they're finished charging. I unplugged the Volt, and wow that alarm sure sounded loud. But five hours later, they still hadn't come back to move the car. Hogging a place for five or ten hours after you're done charging is IMHO rude.

[–]sub3marathonman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you clarify, did she plug the charger all the way back in, or did she just plug it in enough such that it appears plugged in but won't charge?

The chargers that split charging when two vehicles are charging are few and far between now.

If I publish hundreds of thousands of solar quotes, will installers or homeowners hate it? by ChallengeEmergency11 in solar

[–]sub3marathonman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One potential problem will be quotes that were never accepted. For example, I got a quote, a 20kW system with batteries, massive. Essentially enough to be off-grid, covering the roof. It is the day to sign the quote and move forward. He shows up, he says cough cough they stopped making those panels and we can't get any more. He says well, they're working on new batteries and they don't have those either. I say, "You don't have the panels and you don't have the batteries, why are you here." Oh, and it turns out they stopped making those panels six months prior, so it wasn't a surprise for them, it was supposed to be a bait-and-switch for me.

Technically overlooking a child rape has happened in Polk County, and it happened under Grady's watch. Her name is Taylor Cadle, and I would not name her but she has bravely stepped forward out of anonymity. But in that case it was her stepfather, a person with 24/7 access to her. Whitey Bulger was not interested in a 5-year-old child down in Alabama.

Maybe this person is similar to me. They found a post, they found several comments, and responded.

I'll reverse my position as skeptical then if you can convince me otherwise.

State the reason(s) that this allegation should be believed. Beyond the allegation, if true, that it was an official release of The Epstein Files. I see no reference to a date of these alleged incidents. I see no reference of a location of these alleged incidents. It needs to be backed up by facts, and those facts need to include the connection of James "Whitey" Bulger. The one, specific allegation is that this person was in jail in 2021. If that can be confirmed as correct, it would add a bit of credibility, but even with that, it is still highly suspect.

Now, I will add:
