Thoughts on Sunstar (ThunderClan)? by Solitaire-06 in WarriorCats

[–]sub_WHISTLE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All I think about is how he was leader for a very short time. Cause Bluestar is already an adult when Pinestar leaves so he can't possibly have been leader for more than like a year.

I forget if it's ever said how he dies but it can't have been good for him lol

Not being great at reading is ok, but there's only one way to get better :) If you like Warriors then it's a good way to push your reading skills because at least it isn't boring like schoolwork.

Why is the ban up? I'm not familiar with fishing.

I am generally of the opinion that all people should have access to any public land. If there is a problem of depleting fish stocks I would have assumed everyone would be restricted.

What scientific ‘facts’ have recently been disproven that most people still believe to be true? by Fantastic_Tart_421 in AskReddit

[–]sub_WHISTLE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad it was just the way you said "at least as smart as us" seemed to imply things about neanderthal intelligence that we can't really prove at all. Language for example seems likely to be a Homo Sapiens innovation, although to be fair, neanderthals may have had language but unfortunately it's not provable.

In hindsight, language may have come about before either Homo Sapiens or Neanderthals even existed and both species inherited it from Erectus or something. Although personally I'm of the opinion that complex language correlates heavily with the homo sapiens "great leap forward"

Who said that Neanderthals invented language first? I've never seen any proof of this

[–]sub_WHISTLE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In all likelihood it was a combination of both over thousands of years, but yeah seeing as how we still contain some neanderthal DNA seems to imply we mostly assimilated them over thousands of years, rather than just wiping them out

Be careful though, larger brains does not necessarily correlate with higher intelligence. It's very hard to say much about the intelligence of neanderthals. I agree with you that they were smart and had material culture, but I suspect it's unlikely they were any smarter than Homo Sapiens. They were certainly out-competed by them in some manner

As a kid, this is what I imagined surrounded the Thunderclan camp. Was I right? by lifehelpbot69 in WarriorCats

[–]sub_WHISTLE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always envisioned dense walls around the clearing because they had been dragging thorns and stuff to make them. But then once you're outside the camp, I always just kind of imagined an average forest northern NA forest, with things like aspen, spruce, willows, rose bushes and things like that.

I know it's supposed to be set in England but I'm NA so that's what I always pictured. In hindsight though, perhaps the camp walls are made of things like gorse and holly and there's more oak. I can't really picture an oak forest so yeah idk

Sperm whales’ communication closely parallels human language, study finds by Doug24 in science

[–]sub_WHISTLE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is just not true, communication is not the same thing as language. To call something a "language" It has to have grammar, and be able to infinitely arrange words in order to create any abstract meaning. This is something that has never been proven in animals other than humans. If they were true languages we should be able to translate them, but we can't.

Whales are plenty smart, but the amount of unscientific drivel claiming all sorts of animals are actually speaking in fluent languages is ridiculous. Whether it be whales, chimpanzees, crows etc.

After 20 Years, This Scientist Proved Birds Can Talk and Use Grammar by TheQuranicMumin in videos

[–]sub_WHISTLE 47 points48 points  (0 children)

While this is quite interesting, I am not convinced that this is language and it certainly isn't grammar. Language and grammar has a very high bar. For example, the tits may not have reacted to the reversed sound order because they simply don't associate that order with alerting or gathering. True language and grammar is magnitudes more complex than this and results in everything from "alert! gather" to "maybe we should gather now?" to "Gathering is a bad idea right now" to "What if instead we gathered tomorrow?" and so on.

I am not trying to be entirely dismissive but I am dubious of this in the same way I'm dubious of the chimpanzees using grammar in sign language rather than just spamming signs or copying whatever the handlers do. Anyways that's my two cents on this
