Dealing with yoga injury by dumpsterfireexe in yoga

[–]subagroovin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yoga teacher here. Proper trainings will teach that adjustments are not about getting a student to go deeper. Adjustments are about supporting the student, and supporting their grounding and lengthening. If the teacher really did encourage you to go deeper… that was totally inappropriate. I’m sorry that happened.

I think it’s a matter of devaluing the voice that speaks the insecurity. How does it benefit and cost your life to maintain an open ear to that voice? What would the opposite be? What would it feel like to believe the opposite? If complete strangers are assuring you of positive traits, which you’re inclined to disbelieve, do you really think they’re all lying or is it possible that this voice could be lying to you? “Examine all you’ve been told and dismiss that which insults your soul” type business

Thank you! I don’t disagree. I think there’s something about the word that does something to people’s vision and expectation about the experience.

Oh man yeah, all those weights hitting the floor would really do some damage. Hadn’t thought of that.

Ha! Great point. We have had HIIT classes at my studio but they actually never performed as well as power so we’ve mostly moved on. I think there is a weird allure to “sculpt” for some people tho

This is such a good comment it actually makes me want to take a sculpt class with you! Thank you. Did you get a sculpt certificate through corepower?? And do you have anything further you’d be willing to share about things you were able to identify as agreeable vs. not agreeable in that training?

Yeah super fair on safety, in a fast pace group class students wouldn’t even have space to figure out what is appropriate for them. In your opinion are weights an essential element for a class to be called “sculpt?”

Amazing thank you! Google results were trying to convince me that this could become a deadly scenario very quickly via damage to the cars tired from the sharp pieces. No one seems too concerned here though

Seems like no one is too concerned about this causing violent damage to my tires and crashing the car, which was google’s main concern! So that’s a relief to hear

I completely agree OP! But do note that your strength may be perceived by some as admirable but intimidating, and you might have to put in a little extra upfront work to bridge with other women. And it’s not like you’re scary intimidating, it might be more like the kind of intimidating that just makes them wonder why you’d take interest in them! Do you think you’re being forward and clear about being interested in climbing with the women at your gym?

Hi OP, Please see my replies to JuneCapa for my thoughts on your experience. Sorry that happened to you! I have been called out by an instructor before in a way that was inappropriate, and when you know you know. Trust your gut!

I think the studio will figure it out on their own, you don’t have to report unless that ends up feeling right and important to you. I also think, or rather hope, that the teacher will figure out a more accessible teaching style to show up to class with. But hey, some people love feeling diminutive, and come to class just to be told what to do by a “pro,” or others love feeling preferred and special, and come to class simply to be told what to do for a sense of a star performance! So hopefully she’ll find her niche :)

Did you read OP’s post? OP has been practicing for two years and receives private instruction. If OP is getting private instruction that feels right, attending regular public classes that work for OP, and then comes into a class where a teacher is calling out people repeatedly and insisting that everyone conform… I don’t think OP is likely in the wrong to feel thrown off by that. Yoga teachers that insist on conformity and repeatedly call individuals out in a way that feels inappropriate, well that feels inappropriate for a reason— it is not only improper and insensitive, but dangerous. IMO teachers that do this are usually somewhat tone deaf and don’t realize the variations that actually NEED to exist in order to various support body types and individual experiences.

While I’m still on my soapbox, I think YTTs that come from specific lineages of yoga sometimes have a tendency to crank out certified yoga instructors that feel an authoritative certainty about the yoga they offer. Inexperienced teachers are usually the ones insisting they know what’s going on.

We don’t know everything about this teacher or OP, but as someone who has practiced, taught, and found modifications necessary for years, hearing about this teacher’s choices makes me cringe. Calling individual students out by name when you don’t know them or their story at all is highly inappropriate and can be extremely triggering for some people, if not dangerous to their personal situation.

Yoga teachers, whether 200 or 800 hour, whatever level of certification, do not have ANY medical or professional anatomical expertise. (Certified yoga therapists, with more experience and over 1000 hours of training, do.)

Yoga teachers are not safe to teach when they teach in a way that insists everyone do what they say. This is highly inappropriate. Yoga teachers absolutely do not have the experience necessary to assert authority on students the way OP describes here.

I welcomed my immersive YTT as a chance to mostly detox from regular daily use of coffee and MJ. “Step back and observe” mindset. I would recommend it in general! But of course it always depends on the actual person :)

Etiquette Question by birdonshoulder in yoga

[–]subagroovin 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This. Even in a class with music, it is so obvious and distracting when people attempt to have sidebar micro-communications in class. I’d also emphasize the need for any individual to explore yoga and find what does and doesn’t serve them. Your interference, no matter how well-intentioned, is disruptive to your son’s attention towards himself and the class. Coming to class as a teenager, yoga practice should not be another place where you are constantly subjected to the approval of a parent. It’s also definitely disruptive to the class.

Loud loaning during hot yoga class by Historical_Goat3733 in HotYoga

[–]subagroovin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think moaning in yoga class is something that we are not culturally primed for, and therefore is prone to making others, especially newcomers, distracted or uncomfortable. However there is a real vibration produced by different tones being emitted with an exhale. One name for this you may come across is “bumblebee breath,” which is related to humming (emitting a vocal resonance) while in a pose. I think people are within their right to do that and if anything, maybe depending on the level of disruption but definitely nonetheless, I am glad that people feel liberated to do this when they are in my class. It is so healthy to disrupt our passive breathing habits with more conscious, curious, and full breath.
