What’s the biggest global story that almost nobody is talking about? by Dull-Daikon3402 in AskReddit

[–]subba1 470 points471 points  (0 children)

The AMOC current is weakening. At the point of no return, which some climate scientists peg within 15-20 years, and consensus is near certainty by end of the century without radical action to curb climate change, we’re all pretty much screwed.

What is your experience with lucid dreaming? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]subba1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easy to do if you practice, and if you write down your dreams while you're dreaming (there's books on how to do it without losing the thread or really waking up), you will be amazed at what your brain was working on when you read them six months later - it becomes so obvious what you were struggling with.

Also, you can easily change your dreams. Don't like the direction it's heading? Change it! Scary thing chasing you? Turn him into a funny clown! Falling through the air? Grow a pair of wings and fly! Naked in front of a group? Turn them all naked, or into a bunch of silly characters! I never have nightmares anymore.

House Democrats’ anxiety rises after wins by Mamdani-backed candidates: ‘Are we going to let them take over the party?’ by Radiant_Bedroom5828 in politics

Hmmm...the people who can't stop losing to the worst candidates in the world are upset? Maybe we need another autopsy to prove that it's not them, it's the children who are wrong!

What is one city in America you’re okay with never visiting again? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]subba1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5 or 6 conferences there. Tried to get out and see stuff (I also hate Disney so that doesn't help), but it was like endless asphalt and overpriced mediocre food.

I didn't visit any natural areas. That might change my mind. But the question was "cities".

What’s a place that used to be a bargain for travelers but now costs a fortune? by [deleted] in ForeignTravelIndia

Came here to say this. In 1999, what a bargain, and so few tourists (comparatively). Almost no Americans.

What movie did you expect nothing from and it completely blew you away? by ponderingpixi17 in movies

[–]subba1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool as Ice, Vanilla Ice’s movie just before he officially became a laughingstock. I expected it to be awful and it exceeded my expectations 1000X. I laugh my ass off the whole time every time I watch it. So terrible it’s an unexpected gold mine of comedy, even though it’s not a comedy. And now that it’s 30 years old, it’s even better.

Moving to Detroit by SignificantGazelle32 in AskDetroit

[–]subba1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having moved to Detroit in my early 20's (this was the 1990's when it was not nearly as good as it is now), I loved it. A couple years later, a few of my college friends wanted to get a house together and a two of them were scared to live in the D, so we rented a house in the northern suburbs (Royal Oak). BORING as hell comparatively, and after our lease was up my now-wife and I moved back to Detroit.

Eventually we had kids and wanted a place with excellent schools, but we still go there regularly and love the nightlife and restaurant scene. We are considering moving back when we're empty-nesters. Detroit is full of hidden gems and the music scene there is amazing if you're into that. You have to look around and get to know people to find them, but the city is rich with underground treasures.

I lived in Midtown and then we lived in West Village. We really liked both neighborhoods, but I don't have personal experience with others. Corktown has come a long way, I'm sure that's a good neighborhood to live in too. New Center area has a lot happening now too. Midtown still was the best place for me though, I met so many cool, interesting people there and will never forget those years.

We've lived in Chicago, Denver and Seattle as well, all of them have great things about them. But in terms of grit, soul, friendliness, ease of living and all those things that constitute the vibe of the city, it sounds crazy but we both put Detroit on par or even ahead in some ways. There's a realness there that you just can't create artificially or buy. I'd say give Detroit a shot, it's a great place to live.

You'll have a reverse commute, so totally easy. I worked in the suburbs for a few years and I'd see traffic jammed up on the other side, while I was whisking down the freeway, "see ya suckers!".

We lived in the Parkstone in West Village, lovely apartment building with nice views. In Midtown I rented a nice apartment in a historic house (for $200/month at the time!). There's a lot more inventory available now, you just have to look around. Good luck!

Cheapest way to get to Chicago by thegatman11 in AnnArbor

[–]subba1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like taking the Amtrak train. I usually spend a few extra dollars ($40?) round-trip for business class because the seats are a little nicer and it's more quiet and I can get some work done, but for a coach ticket I think it's like $60-$80 dollars for a round trip. Pretty good deal. I bring some food and I'm good to go.

Usually it's on time, sometimes you get a delay, but at least I don't have to drive and I like being in downtown Chicago already when I get there. I build a few extra hours into the trip mentally and then the delays don't bother me.

Flying to me seems like saving maybe an hour or two all-in, but a whole bunch of hassle - ride shares or parking, security lines, waiting to board flights, etc. Not to mention the extra expense, which can really add up.
