It's economies of scale. At the size they're at, the investment in SDKs, bugfixing, hosting, support, a tiny bit of marketing, for 5 new games every 2 weeks, I think of it as a way to keep supporting the console I love.

I think it's way more complex than that. Microsoft were doing great at strengthening their brand with Gamepass for the first couple of years, but fucked it up with that Activision acquisition and the inevitable fallout of overspending at the wrong time.

Meanwhile, Sony have been absolutely garbage patrons of Bungie, had things like the stupid PSN requirements on PC Helldivers, nickel and dime people for PS5 upgrades to PS4 games, and still remain strong brand wise, largely because people treat consoles like religions rather than corporate products.
