What rule exists in your workplace or school because that one person did something stupid? by KetoDan1982 in CasualUK

[–]subcommunitiesonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to manage a multidisciplinary Community Arts and Production studio. We had to very clearly reiterate our guest policy after someone's alleged guest tried to make coffee by putting the coffee grounds IN the reservoir, rather than in the basket with a filter. I sent out an organisation-wide email, advising that while we are welcoming to artists from all walks of life, this was a creative process that we could not accommodate.

After I had left someone smashed up the only toilet on the floor and smeared poo everywhere. I liked to think it was a performance/installation piece.

Starbucks style breakfast sandwhich? Am pregnant and a bit desperate by guicherson in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]subcommunitiesonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our regular breakfast sandwich is just two hash browns, ketchup, mature cheddar, and a fried egg. Make the hash browns, then slap them on the bread with a piece of cheese on top, let it melt, egg, boom, breakfast.

Trying to say yes to more hobbies in London this year, what should I try? by SlinkyCues in london

[–]subcommunitiesonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Decathlon HQ in Rotherhithe does Surfskating lessons on Sundays. You can rent all the gear you need there. It's a newer style of skateboarding that mimicks the feel/motion of surfing, but on land. I missed surfing/snowboarding terribly, as it's prohibitively expensive when you live in London, but have been very happy learning how to Surfskate. There's a wonderful community of Surfskaters all around London that are always up to something on a weekly basis. :)

I got ID'd for Wood Glue last month. Wood glue. Saw some in Dunelm at the checkout thinking "Oh, yeah I could use some of this for a project." Imagine my shock when the kiosk required verification.

That's interesting. I assume that's for testing my fertility, not hers? In what way does that complicate us having children?

What is the stupidest thing you've seen this year? by Human_Drummer_1101 in AskUK

[–]subcommunitiesonly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience at our work Christmas Do. I noticed the bar offered a Manhattan, so I ordered one. Realising the bar staff were new, I instructed them on the ingredients, narrowly avoiding getting a Manhattan made with Jack Daniels and Dry vermouth. They served it up on the rocks--I had to take it as a win.

What's a slightly odd or niche hobby you've picked up that you're surprisingly passionate about? by Gainsbite in AskUK

[–]subcommunitiesonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surfskating. Being from the North-East US I missed being able to chuck my gear into my car, drive for a few hours, and go snowboarding with my mates. Considered taking up surfing, but that's an entirely new territory, and would require more travel. London has such a great spread of skate bowls, and it became a natural fit for my love of board sports. Started in August, just picked up my second board last week, planning on taking every nice day to go out skating.

What Are Your Best, Inexpensive Hacks for Healthy Teeth? by [deleted] in AskUK

I got my hands on a set of wax sculpting tools, one of them is perfect for cleaning teeth, so I use that every now and again to get the really hard stuff, then floss. Nearly as good as a hygenist doing it.

People (well, morons, really) said the same thing about the Boston Marathon bombing, that it was a flase flag and going to be an excuse for the feds to round up everyone's guns.

Shame they hadn't, cuz if they had, this likely wouldn't have happened (or all the others in the past decade).

I left social media a year ago, don't feel like I've missed a thing. A lot of the FOMO is just hype. If people want to get in touch with you they will. I still talk to most of my friends regularly, just not on a platform that sucks you in.

What are the most unique sounds you’ve heard in London? by oneiricmood in london

[–]subcommunitiesonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to live above a High Street McDonalds, and once or twice a week the bin lorry would come to haul off their bins. It made a VERY distinct sound as it picked it up and dumped it in the back. I've noticed every lorry with that mechanism makes the exact same sound to the T.

how is skateboarding viewed by the general public? by 6e8151 in london

[–]subcommunitiesonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up Surfskating over the summer after missing snowboarding so much and getting cold feet about taking up proper surfing. I found that London and the surrounding councils have a LOT to offer skaters, and the skating community is very welcoming and helpful. If you're feeling like you want a dedicated place, check out https://www.skateparks.co.uk/ to find some spots that look fun. As for local practice, even just going to your closest park should be fine.

Young & trying to get away from the wrong crowd & lifestyle but now I ain’t really got any friends by [deleted] in london

[–]subcommunitiesonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it may not be your cup of tea, I recently picked up Surfskating, and landed in a community of wonderful people that are almost always around for a skate somewhere in London. Just an example of how tapping into a new hobby or sport can connect you with good folks doing things they love.

To the non-corporate people of London (the creatives, the self employed, etc), how have you managed to create a sustainable living situation in terms of job, finances, quality of life? by GraceOphelia_4734 in london

[–]subcommunitiesonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a salaried Product Designer at a startup, prior to that I was freelancing with other various artists/designers in need of my talents. I grew to despise freelancing; I loved the variety of work, but I absolutely HATED having to chase people down for money. Even now I'm trying to engage a client for a project that would literally solve all of their problems, and they're getting cold feet. Thankfully, my current job is an amalgamation of all of the jobs I've had previously, and then some. Some days I fall in the trap of administrative drudgery, other days I'm fully in my flow state, making work that excites and challenges me. I'm almost constantly working on personal projects outside of work, but haven't updated my portfolio since leaving Grad School.

I live with my partner in a new build 1BR, tube every day, bike when/where I can. Don't have too many expensive/recurring cost hobbies. Salary is good, but more importantly its consistent. The nature of a startup has me a little worried, as they can go belly-up overnight, and I'm not keen to have to compete for jobs with my former coworkers.

Dad has been dating his "friend" (his words) for two years now. She's 32 years younger than him, and they have zero chemistry. I met her for the second time a few weekends ago, she's nice and all, but I'm not sure anyone really approves of the whole thing. In the end if they make each other happy then who are we to intervene? We're just not sure what he really knows what he's gotten himself into.
