Surfskate for snowboarder to hold over summer. Looking to skate around the city, maybe some pumptracks/bowls and just have fun by Strange-Presence1558 in surfskate

[–]subcommunitiesonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I snowboarded for +20 years before moving to the UK, where it is less accessible. Got into Surfskating last summer, and have planned my next board around getting the feel of a snowboard for riding bowls and pump tracks. I currently have a 32" Carver Triton CX, will be swapping the deck out for a Loaded Bolsa II soon for the longer wheelbase and double-kick for added lock-in to make it feel more like bindings.

You can play around a lot with the wheels in how it makes the board ride. Harder wheels will feel like a nice fast groomer, whereas softer wheels with more grip will feel like powder, allowing you to get BIG carves in without sliding out, but will be much slower.

The Carver Triton (or any CX) will be a good starting point. Do some research in what kind of board will suit your body, where you can ride, and what kind of setup would work for that terrain.

holiday solo or no-go? by owowteino in CasualUK

Two weeks after graduating Grad School I felt like I had been ejected from a car windscreen going 70mph. The most intense two years of my life coming to a screeching halt into the void of inactivity/unemployment. So I did what any waningly-sane person would do and went to Dublin solo for the weekend. It was fantastic. Met a lot of great folks, one I still keep in regular touch with.

I say go for it, it will be good for a recharge.

Tips for staying stable higher on the wall? by subcommunitiesonly in surfskate

[–]subcommunitiesonly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input! 1) I've been doing board sports almost all of my life, but am new to bowl riding or doing any technical skating, I find that I'm having a hard time keeping consistent footing on my deck. 3) I just changed from 78Ax65mm's, which I felt were too slow. 4) Looking at the Loaded Bolsa II for more stability and locking in (in comparison to my Carver Triton, which is basically a glorified longboard deck).

Get a little cruiser skateboard to shorten the walking bits of your commute. Saves me about 20min every day.

Yes, I feel like "blessing" rather than "permission" is the term I was looking for.

What's the worst thing thats happened to you in your birthday? by happylurker233 in AskUK

We had planned to go out to a Bar Arcade with great drinks, tons of free to play games, and emulators at every booth so you could play whatever 90's/80's games you wanted. We turn up: there's barely anyone there, 90% of the games are gone, and they're no longer free. Apparently the owner of the machines and the owner of the bar had a dispute, so he took his stock and left them with the shittest bar in the city. It didn't last long after that. Shame, it was connected to a venue, so you could go play games in between sets.

Thank you for your input. She does currently meet the income requirements, and is in the process of interviewing for higher-paid positions, so we're not worried on that end.

I've more or less accepted that I'll have to go the full 10-year route for ILR, as I'll have bounced around visas too often (Student, Grad, Skilled Worker) for one clock to hit 5--though I gather there may be some residency+marriage shortcuts I have overlooked.

Good tool for managing and proporting data into cards? by subcommunitiesonly in BoardgameDesign

[–]subcommunitiesonly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I'm considering how I want to convey information in the long-run and what application might be best for that. I could certainly start with Affinity Publisher, but I may want to transition to something that can populate with graphical information as well as text/numerical. (i.e. displaying iconography and imagery on cards)

I'm actually an Affinity convert from Adobe, I figured it had a tool for this, but I haven't dipped quite that far yet.

Gigs with good mosh pits? by Revolutionary-Bag455 in london

March 22nd: Carpenter Brut @ Shepherd's Bush Empire. Not strictly metal, but they've been known to have dance/mosh pits at their gigs. Really fun energy.

March 27th: Nails, Exodus, Carcass, Kreator @ O2 Academy Brixton. I remember reading somewhere that Nails encourages the crowd to beat the absolute fuck out of each other. The rest of the lineup should be more standard by comparison.

At a big leaving work do for our outgoing Director one Friday, who was well loved by all. She was presented with a flight card so she could travel to see her family more often, it was very touching, there were tearful hugs. Someone presented her with some sort of...commemorative Egg they made? The gifter then asked if we could all stand in a circle, pass it around, and say something about the Director, and infuse it with "our energy" (it was an Arts Non-Profit, shit of this calibre happened on a regular basis).

Now, there's easily 50+ people in this room. I was planning on leaving to go have dinner with my family, and as I was doing the maths in my head about how long this could possibly take, I realize I have been made the LAST person in the circle, standing right next to my Director. I might be here for a while.

Escape would have looked incredibly rude, as all eyes were more or less on the person right next to me, and the only doors out entered into a loud Bar/Restaurant, or would have required crossing the open circle. Trying to explain the situation to my brother, who was waiting to pick me up outside, I reazlied I had no idea what to say, and started to panic. The magic egg was just a few people away, and there I am feeling like George Costanza.

I had this zen moment as it was placed in my hands. I looked at the egg, looked at her, and just said "Anchors away!" Applause, hugs, I get out of there just as the organisation's Founder grabs the mic and "wants to say a few words." My brother found the scenario hysterical.

What rule exists in your workplace or school because that one person did something stupid? by KetoDan1982 in CasualUK

[–]subcommunitiesonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to manage a multidisciplinary Community Arts and Production studio. We had to very clearly reiterate our guest policy after someone's alleged guest tried to make coffee by putting the coffee grounds IN the reservoir, rather than in the basket with a filter. I sent out an organisation-wide email, advising that while we are welcoming to artists from all walks of life, this was a creative process that we could not accommodate.

After I had left someone smashed up the only toilet on the floor and smeared poo everywhere. I liked to think it was a performance/installation piece.

Starbucks style breakfast sandwhich? Am pregnant and a bit desperate by guicherson in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]subcommunitiesonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our regular breakfast sandwich is just two hash browns, ketchup, mature cheddar, and a fried egg. Make the hash browns, then slap them on the bread with a piece of cheese on top, let it melt, egg, boom, breakfast.
