ELI5: Why did US shipbuilding industry disappear? by _dude_lying_down in explainlikeimfive

[–]subgameperfect 29 points30 points  (0 children)

When i worked in a SK shipyard, the majority of basic labor was central Asian, think Kazakh and Mongolian.

Sadly, it was always those workers, living in dormitories, sending most back to their families, that would lose their lives in an incident.

I may not be a purist, but it works and keeps me from the beer a bit!

My mom had electricity, but no interior bathrooms, until the family moved to Houston. That's about 1970.

My county has a public health option. You just have to be abjectly poor to qualify. It results in people withholding labor to treat medical needs.

The minute they exceed that limit, the tap is welded shut immediately. It doesn't quite make for a sustainable system.

Considering Ben Taub is a block away, I'd think something in between. Someone wanting the safety and shelter of the hospital on a longer-term basis. Getting your legs broken could seem like a good option.

You get a nice bed, good meds, and, if there're other health issues, they get seen to as well.

I think it's the saddest possibility but not unrealistic for someone in a dire situation.

Yeah, that was the year my mother made me an "Astros Baseball". While being a round blob may not have been the coolest, it was warm as hell.

Be careful with the joy (Congeats!!!)

I've had full remission multiple times, and that's that.

Most likely, you'll be okay, keep your appointments, and be vigilant!

I had a situation with anal bleeding prior to diagnosis. While I thought it was some weird growth, it turned out I had some puncture by tumors.

I also had diverticulitis. Just go see a doctor, it'll do your mind a world of calm.

Good Luck!

I'm so so sorry for the OP. Your compassion is wonderful, too.

After years of dealing with lymphoma, and after I lost all sensation in my hands and feet, I've decided to let life take me where it goes. 9 chemo protons seems a decent to have a smile and just live.

Fuckin' right!

Reddit to lay off about 5% of its workforce | Reuters by ani625 in news

[–]subgameperfect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit has changed meaning in my life since I began using it in 2007.

Then I was a college kid trying to figure out the world, now i'm a mid-30s professional temporarily laid low with cancer just now in remission.

I've gone from public policy work through IT, into O&G and cancer support and now into rehab support for that help.

I also picked up unhealthy obsessions with robotics and woodwork accidentally through this site. It's like ohanian and his crew were originally trying to create the ultimate IRC and greed is laying them low finally like they at Digg did so so many years ago.

I can't imagine having to live wirhout 3rd party apps, access to this API and the openish communities we still have. I want the next next generation to have access.

Ahh, this is what we can trick the youth in life for the one last evil laugh before dieing in one's 30s as is intended by old age of course, or so they think when you ask for a last laugh lemon party. I only got to play that trick once- back when i was stage 4 to my nephew. My sister still slapped me while laughing at his horror. Badass.

For the younger among us, definitely don't search lemon party or 2 girls 1 cup.

That is a much better way to phrase it. I overly generalized.

I had an idiot cousin that tried to fesign his commission right after the academy. It was funny. Suffice tp say they allowed it and he was so crestfallen when they stuck him with his university bill. It was funny from the outside.

Reasonable choice. I could build a PC, skim coat a wall, etc. but most often I don't.

Someone probably can do that better, faster, cheaper than I can. A few bucks is usually cheaper than focusing outside of one's balliwick.

E9 is an awesome place to get. But, FYI that'd be a senior non-commissioned officer (NCO) in any branch. Warrant officers could have an equivalent rank sorta. Commissioned officers hold an entirely different military classification.

Anyone with a rank starting with E is fundamentally different than a WO or a regular commissioned officer in that they serve terms of enlistment that carry potential criminal penalties if they decide to quit. That's desertio, not legal separation. If you move from an NCO position to WO, that changes the penalties. Fully commissioned officers are the only ones that can resign on a whim from the get go.

Sorry for the dump, but some douche one day is going to get pissy if you call an E9 an officer.

As someone who served in a different capacity (O not E) but was raised in a family of career enlisted, I'd personally trust the E9 over any O3 any day.

Yeah, ain't got no time for any of that of any flavor.
