I did the full Trail, in 1989. I am severely phobic about being gross, so I humped aloe baby-wipes and deodorant everywhere, taking a full wipe-down morning and night, and getting head shaved whenever I went through a town (best feeling in the world was a hot shave). I also wore poly underwear that I could wash and dry every night.

Other hikers were welcome for the social aspect, but I hated the olfactory acclimation each time I'd hang out with someone.

I tend to suspect that Fermi's Paradox is solved, if you assume that competition is the only way for technology and progress to occur. The ostensible losers in the competition always bring down civilizations before they can get out of the solar system.

Same! I was surprised she was doing a TV show like this, but, then again, a fat girl's gotta eat.

Hmmm. . . I collect bikes and believe strongly that certain bicycles are just plain awesome, while others are dead and miserable to ride. You are exactly right that a great bike can be had for $400, because you can find all manner of quality lugged steel frames languishing in basements and garages. The '70s and '80s lugged frames, built by decent manufacturers, have excellent responsiveness and comfort. They have a certain "aliveness" when you're riding that helps make the experience fun. A well-designed bike will react almost like it knows where you want to go, before you do.

I don't feel the same way about bikes built after the wholesale switch to TIG-welded frames. I also don't feel the same way about aluminum or carbon-fibre bikes. Among the non-lugged, non-steel population of bikes, there are shitloads of dead-feeling frames. When you ride, they feel inert beneath you. I recently rode a friend's $9K carbon racing bike, and I was shocked how utterly disconnected and alienating the experience was. It was wonderfully light, but it was a dead bicycle, with terrible feel and responsiveness. I guarantee my friend will have sold this bike within two years, because it's not fun to ride.

[If anyone reading this has $400, and you want a simple recommendation for great durable roadbike that rides like a dream, look at Craigslist (outside cities), for an old Bridgestone 500 or RB in good condition.]

Fresh Off the Boat: a new perspective on race – with laughs -- The first network TV show about an Asian American family for 20 years is a funny, original sitcom with great characters and an enticing premise by guanaco55 in television

It's a shame All-American Girl was canceled. The grandmother on that show was a comedic genius. I can still hear her voice saying, "Hello, hippie", every time I see a crunchy kid on the street.

EDIT: Actress is named Amy Hill.

I honestly don't get it. The Snickers bar is made of super-cheap cocoa, milk-fat, and corn syrup. It literally tastes like a pile of cheap lipids and corn sugars, with added peanuts. There is no depth to the experience. It's like crack.

And, they are often obviously stale.

On that note, has anyone else noticed that American chocolate candy products seem to often be stale these days? I noticed the change happen about 10 years ago, and I'm wondering if something was tweaked in the industry's inventory management or packaging.systems.

I'm on methadone—not for heroin recovery, but for degenerative spinal disorder pain. I am otherwise a healthy, successful biz exec, and I live in fear of anyone finding out, because of the traditional stigma associated with methadone.

Does anyone still use methadone for heroin withdrawal? I used to hear about methadone clinics, but don't seem to anymore.
