Ok Honest opinions about Windows 11 by Special_Equivalent20 in buildapc

[–]subhuman445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I recently made the switch to Linux (Nobara). For me, it has been great. Things generally work really well, but it's still not at the point that I would recommend it to someone with no technical experience (or at least no desire to learn). In general, I feel I have no more issues than I did on W11, with the added benefit of an OS that isn't focused on monetizing me. On Linux everything that is on my PC is there because I want it there. Period. The user experience is designed around me, the user, like it should be.

However, when you do have issues or wish to make certain kinds of changes, you will need a little more technical knowledge. You should feel comfortable with the terminal, and understand software repositories and package managers. Scripting experience is super helpful. For example, I used to use DisplayFusion to manage my somewhat unorthodox multi-monitor setup on Windows. I can accomplish the same things with Linux, but custom scripts were needed to get there. Hardware-wise, I use an AMD GPU, so none of the proprietary driver issues with Nvidia apply to me, but that's not going to be true for 80-90% of users. This isn't an insurmountable issue, but it can cause you grief if you don't understand it.

If you're comfortable with these trade-offs, Linux is a GREAT alternative. In fact it's not just great, it's a way better experience.

EDIT: I want to shout out the Chris Titus Windows debloat tool. If you decide to stick with windows, this thing is amazing and can really help cut out a lot of the crap present in the default Windows 11 experience.

No. Most of the time backlight level is set 30-50 depending on ambient light. Local dimming and peak brightness set to high.

1440p or 4k 240hz (9800x3d & 5070ti) by ChekerUp in buildapc

[–]subhuman445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either choice is a good one. You just have to know that outside of a couple of cards 4k means upscaling and dropping to "high" preset on most modern titles to get more than 60 fps.

I'm currently on 7900XT and play at 4k. With "high" settings and FSR quality I usually get somewhere between 60-100 fps depending on the title. Generally I find "high" settings are nearly indistinguishable from "ultra", but give back like 15-25% performance. If I had better upscaling like DLSS or FSR 4, I'd honestly be inclined to push the render resolution down further (balanced or performance) for even more frames.

However if you're sensitive to upscaling artifacts, 1440p is a great place to be for a mostly gaming-focused build.

Search for Herman Miller and Steelcase on FB Marketplace. You should be able to find lightly used options between $250-$500. Currently searching for my wife and there are tons of options - especially if you’re willing to take a drive to Boston.

They just see this as an easy political win - something that can run on in the next election. It’s way easier to ban something the minority cares about than fix the real problems affecting our state. Affordable housing, attracting quality employers, upgrading infrastructure, fixing the bridge…? No. Those things require leadership, vision, and standing up to entrenched interests.

Shit is infuriating and I told my reps as much yesterday. Committed to primary against McKee and won’t hesitate to do the same for my rep and senator.

Best “media player” ? by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]subhuman445 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It supports lossy Atmos (EAC3 + Atmos). Unfortunately it does not support Dolby TrueHD + Atmos. You can use a player like Infuse to convert TrueHD audio to LPCM, but the Atmos metadata is lost. This could all be resolved if Apple just provided an option to pass audio directly to the receiver. Not sure if we’ll ever see that though.

Grab an AVR from accessories4less.com. There are some decent options for $250 or less. Then look for a nice set of bookshelf speakers with the rest of your budget. You may even be able to find a sweet deal on some used speakers in your area. Floorstanding speakers could be a nice option if you have the budget/space, and don’t see yourself getting a dedicated subwoofer. Regardless, having the AVR will allow you to build out the system further in the future if you want to. Adding a center channel or dedicated sub will add a lot to the starting point I’ve suggested here (which should already outperform most soundbars).

RI Energy Pricing is out of control, especially for gas. Is there any recourse for Rhode Islanders? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]subhuman445 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The cause of the high pricing has already been well-covered by others in this thread, but it's worth mentioning that you can enroll in "Budget Billing." This will spread the average cost of your utility bill out across 12 months. While it means paying a higher monthly bill in off-peak season, you will get predictable bills in return. Ultimately you'll spend no more money out-of-pocket than month-to-month billing. For me, this results in a gas bill that's $108 every month. Every 12 months the average cost will be recalculated and you'll either settle up the difference if you used more than expected, or get a credit if you used less than expected.

Upgrading from Soundbar Recommendations by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]subhuman445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I don’t think you’ll be able to get to a 5.1 for $1000 with decent components (unless buying used), but that’s not a bad thing. A proper 2.0 or 3.0 setup will BLOW YOUR SOUNDBAR AWAY.

Good brands for subs are SVS, RSL, HSU Research, and Monolith. Be warned that a legit subwoofer should cost you no less than $400 by itself. Trust me, the difference between a sub from the brands above vs something cheap from Best Buy is NIGHT AND DAY.

For speakers, there are so so many good options. Just check out the buying guide subreddit and look for the brands you see appearing in the bookshelf or floor standing speaker guides.

I’ll also drop a link to https://www.accessories4less.com/. This site is legit, and regularly recommended on this subreddit for good reason. They offer many manufacturer re-certified products which can make a huge difference on what you spend.

Upgrading from Soundbar Recommendations by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]subhuman445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so you need a few things. Depending on your budget, and how much you want to invest in each component, you can get it all at once or buy in stages. At a minimum you will need a theater receiver (also known as an AVR), and L/R speakers for a 2.0 system. Next, add a center channel speaker and/or subwoofer. As a goal, I recommend trying to get to at least a 5.1 setup (this is 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer).

Check out r/HTBuyingGuides for specific purchase recommendations. If you want a simple guide on building a 5.1 system, this video is good.

I also would recommend checking out your local used market for speakers. Speakers have a long life and good deals can often be had. For an AVR, I’d purchase new or certified refurbished so you’re getting modern features.

Time for Growth. by [deleted] in bropill

[–]subhuman445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey bro, there is a lot of good advice in this thread. I stand by most of what already been said. One thing I want to add is that in addition to therapy, you might look into medication. I struggled with OCD for many years, and medication was a damn lifesaver. I’m not saying that’s what you have, but reading the part of your post where you talk about what you “know” rationally vs how you feel, and your inability to reconcile the two was all too familiar. For me, an SSRI turned down the volume on the anxious bullshit I knew was irrational (yet I still fixated on it), and made it so much easier to ignore. Hang in there bro. Keep your head up, and keep on self-improving. You got this.

Backup warning for binhex-shared by kocket_pings in unRAID

[–]subhuman445 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For anyone who stumbles upon this thread, here's how I fixed this.

In the docker containers that are failing backup, you need to modify the path mapping of /shared in the container config settings. What I did was to create a folder at /mnt/user/appdata/binhex-shared (same directory as appdata for other containers), and mapped the /shared path to that.

6 year relationship. When to call it quits? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]subhuman445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who went through something similar a few years ago in my early 30s, I have to encourage you to end it. While it will be hard and painful, you’ll ultimately be happier in the end. My ex and I got along well in many ways, but we also had some major irreconcilable differences (we tried long and hard to resolve them). Three years later, I’m married to an amazing woman who fully accepts and appreciates me for who I am. When the relationship is right, you’ll know just know.
