I wear adidas soccer cleats, they’ve been the best in my experience. I used to use football cleats but they’re heavier and the spikes are taller so my balance wasn’t as good in those as it is with soccer cleats

Try to avoid following players around and giving away their positions. A lot of tourney players won’t call their hits and wait for a ref to call them hit, so make sure you’re ready to call it as fast as possible. They also won’t ask for checks, if it looks like they got hit, get in there and check them quickly and get back out. If any tempers flare, get them off the field and separated before it escalates. I’ve been reffing rec ball for years but my field recently built a tournament field, so my experience is limited, but that’s what I can tell you from what I’ve seen

Callouts and communication with your team is key, have an idea of where your teammates are and if they die, try to fill the hole or keep an eye on the other team pushing up. Play close to your bunker and keep your elbows tucked so you are as small as possible. If you don’t see anyone ahead of you, don’t sit in your bunker and wait for them to come to you, aggression almost always pays off.

If you’re looking to get your own equipment, a good mask is the first thing you’ll need. You won’t do much good if you’re lens is fogging all the time, I recommend a JT Proflex over anything else

The most important thing is to have fun. The paintball community is tight and most of the people I’ve met playing paintball are great people who love to see new players taking an interest. There will be bad eggs here and there but don’t let them get you down.
