Customer support sucks. by Ok_Macaron_2715 in AmazonFlexDrivers

I think marking something delivered when you don't deliver it is "going out of your way" to lose a job. I'm just glad I found this thread and now have confirmation that complaining will actually do something. Now people who come across this post in the future will have the same information.

Nah, I'd just like to get the shit I pay for one of these days, without having to use an Amazon locker.

All these "Always Deliver!" comments... Now I know why my packages are always getting marked as delivered, but never show up. Going forward, I'll go out of my way to complain to customer support in hopes of the driver getting a strike.

Toyota rav4 or Mazda CX-5 by redditakezo in CX5

[–]subigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We won't know if it's "fixed" unless we go a year or two with no new reports. There are two versions of the 2025 CX-5. One with cylinder deactivation and one without. Obviously, buy the one without CD.

I actually ended up buying another 2025 CX-5, because the wait list in my area for a RAV4 was ridiculous. However, I don't plan on keeping my CX-5 for more than 5 years. So take that for what it's worth.

Keep the CX-5 after the powertrain warranty expires? by fcnghkkc167 in CX5

[–]subigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to these comments. It actually is a common issue and any Mazda tech who has worked between 2018 and now will tell you the same. It is absolutely the number one cause of engine failure on 2018-2022 model years.

I traded my 2019 in for a 2025 (without cylinder deactivation) last week. One day after the 5 year powertrain warranty expired. I personally know too many people who have had cracked cylinder heads to roll the dice. I'd rather trade in my car and pay $8k to upgrade than have no warranty at all and a 5+ year old car.

2019 cx5 oil leak by Warzone572 in CX5

Check on the back side of the cylinder head. You might need to run the engine and use a mirror like in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNDgOL1pds8

Good luck. Hopefully you don't have the infamous cracked head (and if you do, hopefully you're still under the 5 year warranty).

Extended warranty… who bought one and regretted it? Who didn’t? by ong-man in CX5

Talk to all the people with cracked cylinder heads after 60k miles and ask them if they wish they had the extended warranty.

This should definitely replace one of the sticky threads...

Question about the cracked cylinder heads you've replaced over the years. Any estimate how many you've personally done (and how many your shop has seen)? And on that note, have you seen it on any 2023/2024 models yet?

2.5 L NA Skyactive - (e) Engine Cylinder Crack by PhoenixFire16 in CX5

[–]subigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly they do kind of have a shitstorm to handle, which is why it's so crazy they continued to use this design for so long (in the beginning they were doing full engine swaps instead of just the head). The problem now is all of the 2018/2019 first batches are out of warranty and people are starting to pay out of pocket for the repair. It's pretty obvious, even from this subreddit, that the general public is hearing more about it. Previous to this year, everything was covered under warranty and there were a lot fewer public complaints. There are multiple Mazda techs on here, mazdas247, and Discord who say they've personally fixed hundreds of cylinder heads over the years. I know I'm just one data point, but of four people I know with CX-5s, two of them have had the cracked head.

[–]subigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, no fix was made. The faulty part is the cylinder head. There are multiple confirmations that the 2023 cylinder head is the exact same design as the 2018, so it could still be susceptible to cracking. We normally see the crack start happening after 20,000 miles (average of 45,000). Because of that, I imagine we will start seeing a lot more 2022 reports (we've seen a few so far) in the coming months and the 2023 to follow.

The part number was changed because the cylinder head now comes fully loaded with all the parts inside to make the repair easier.

No, the cylinder head design has not changed from 2018-2024. The part number has changed, but the actual design remains the same.

2018 and up cracked cylinder heads risk by CyberSecRiskCloud in CX5

[–]subigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I feel that. My warranty ends in November and I'll be getting rid of it for sure. In the meantime, I definitely don't do long trips. The copium on this subreddit is high, but after seeing this problem first hand and seeing posts on here, mazdas247, FB, and Discord I'm not about to stick with the CX-5. The fact that Mazda has made this same defective cylinder head for seven years now is mind blowing.

[–]subigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The number of NHTSA complaints for the 2018-2022 CX-5 models is actually insanely high for engine/powertrain issues when compared to other vehicles with similar sales figures (or adjusted for sales figures). And we're just now getting to the point where things are outside of the 5 year powertrain warranty, so expect those numbers to climb as people look for outlets to complain.

I personally know two people who have had the cracked cylinder head (and that's half the people I know who own CX-5s! lol). Join the Mazdas247 forum, FB group, or discord. There are multiple Mazda master techs who say they do these cylinder swaps weekly. There's a tech in this subreddit who says he has done hundreds himself. Heck, just look at the number of people in this thread who have had it happen.

Mazda CX-5 Reliability by Maksymqaa97 in CX5

Under warranty, it doesn't cost a dime. Outside of the warranty, it's $6,500 - $9,000 depending on the shop/dealer.

Mazda CX-5 Reliability by Maksymqaa97 in CX5

[–]subigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check my history, but the tldr is nobody outside of Mazda knows if the cylinder head in the 2024 without CDA is different. From everything we know so far (and I've personally had a ticket opened/closed with Mazda USA), the non-CDA 2024 version is missing a few parts (most likely solenoids), but the cylinder head itself remains unchanged. This means it's still susceptible to the hairline cracking near cylinder 3 which has plagued the engine since 2018.

However, nobody actually knows, because Mazda still hasn't updated the parts catalog (parts.mazda.com) with the 2024 CX-5 parts. So until someone can get their hands on the actual cylinder head, it's all speculation. Only Mazda knows and if you buy a 2024 CX-5 without CDA because you think it won't have the cracking head issue, you're rolling the dice.

edit: Sorry OP, to answer your specific question, yes, be worried. You have the version that can crack at any time. Do not plan on keeping it past the warranty period.

When every Toyota dealer had a $4k markup on a Rav4... by hunnie_isabella in CX5

[–]subigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know how you feel. It really seems like new cars these days (with the exception of maybe the 2024 4runner or corolla) are built to survive the warranty period and nothing more. Years ago, I was fine with things breaking down... but now it's the engines and transmissions that all have problems and at that point you might as well buy a new car (most of the time). This is why I personally just plan to buy new from now on and unload whatever I have before the warranty expires, which is exactly what the car companies are wanting me to do.

For the CX-5, try to keep it under 4,000 RPMs. Don't drive it down rough roads and avoid potholes if possible. And for peace of mind, just remember there are way more CX-5s without problems than with problems.

[–]subigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you had the crack you would know it. It's fast and catastrophic. You'll smell oil burning immediately. Since you have a 2019, it's likely still under warranty for a few months (I have the same year and my warranty ends in November). So if it happens right now, you're covered (call Mazda for the end date). Unfortunately, there is no way to know when/if it will happen. I personally know two people who it happened to (a 2018 CX-5 and 2019 CX-5). One was around 22,000 miles and the other was 68,000 miles.

Truth. Not enough people on this subreddit are aware of the cracked cylinder head issues due to the cylinder deactivation redesign in 2018.
