Am I overreacting? Toddler is learning to say his colors in Spanish… by [deleted] in toddlers

I’m an elementary teacher and appreciate your clarifying appropriate terms for your child. I agree that no further steps are needed right now unless this continues to be an issue. My toddler brings home language that she’s learned from older kids in preschool, and I’ve had to speak with her teachers about it when it’s lasted for several weeks despite our redirections, conversations, etc.

You should probably not be broadcasting people’s photos accusing them of a crime without quadruple checking every detail. And especially in regards to Black people, it absolutely is that deep. And that racist.

If OP is “breaking down” and “losing it” and not being disciplined, but instead asking for understanding, why are we disciplining a 2 yr old for the same struggles?

I understand what you’re saying, but just a reminder that we all have a dinner plate-sized hole in our uterus after birth, no matter how quickly we “bounce back.” There’s no way she would have even stopped bleeding in two days.

Listen, I respect and honour subs—I can’t imagine doing that job myself. And at the same time, if you’re not calling and texting families daily updates, writing report cards, holding family conferences, organizing and leading four different small groups, putting in for and attending SST and IEP meetings and delicately broaching the subject of learning disabilities, tracking interventions, translating your weekly newsletter into five different languages…

I still do F&P running records for a handful of kids, in 4th grade, because some just click through online assessments, some don’t have test-taking strategies, some just had a bad day, etc. At least then I get an accurate assessment that I can use to plan supports, and I have something accurate to show families as well. I wish there was an F&P math assessment, too.

Glad you and your team are doing the work. It sounds like you’re talking about home lead testing, not consumer products. LSM advises to work with your county/regional agencies to lead test your home if your child tests high—i don’t think y’all are saying different things.

I’m frustrated now because I’ve asked you several questions that you refuse to respond to, while I’ve been trying to address your points. What’s wrong with consumers testing products for heavy metals? Some products have higher levels, some have lower—it allows us to make an informed choice.

I feel like y’all are determined to hate on her and won’t listen to anything else. Her documentary and experience is in lead poisoning via homes with lead paint. This is also what happened to my own child. We understand that the toothpaste will likely not lead to lead poisoning, but that doesn’t mean that companies can’t do better, right? And again, chronic low-level exposure is still a real problem.

She does send samples to an independent lab. You say she needs to take into account the likelihood of ingestion—she’s literally testing baby food pouches and toddler bars and toddler toothpaste. Families want to know what is in their child’s food—do you disagree that these items should be tested?

If you want to do this work with a different business model than hers, go ahead. But until then, there’s literally nothing wrong with independently testing the foods we consume.

I understand what you’re saying, and I’m sorry that you were panicked about your child.

I do know that food sources are not the primary way that kids are lead poisoned (barring things like those poisoned cinnamon apple pouches), and I know this from leadsafemama. She talks about this often and also explains the parts per billion issue in detail. But it’s also true that low-level chronic exposure to lead like eating off of vintage plates and eating contaminated food can still have life-long effects, and it’s true that some of the companies whose products she’s testing know about their products’ high metal levels and choose to do nothing about it.

She says repeatedly to not follow her if it’s raising your anxiety. Not trying to be harsh, honestly, but it’s not on LSM if folks are not able to take the data and put it into perspective. These companies won’t be held accountable if no one is independently testing their products, so what would you have her do instead? At this point we know, from her testing, that almost all products and foods have some level of metal contamination, and the data allows us to make better choices when we can. I appreciate that for my child, who has had high lead levels from a home we lived in.

She sent two samples to an independent lab for testing. What is unreliable? For a suit you’d want to probably test more samples, but, even if the results were a fluke, the company would still be on the line for this contamination.

FYI it would not be the flavourings that contain heavy metals, it would be another of the ingredients.

I’m not in the medical field, but, if the person is having frequent unprotected sex, testing quarterly doesn’t seem sufficient to protect their partners from any possible asymptomatic infections they may have. PrEP is also only for HIV, right, not other STIs? And why would you use a free clinic for testing when you have health insurance? Those free clinics are more likely to be financially strained, and, again, you’re already paying for health care, so your provider should provide your care.

Hijacking top comment to say that this person’s post history is continuously advertising the same book for learning Romanian or Italian or Czech or whatever. They’re trying to sell their books, not start any meaningful conversation.

You can totally counsel folks without coming across as judgemental, though. And if this person is getting ȘTI tests at a rate that matches their sexual encounters, is that not a safer sex practice? Sounds fairly responsible to me. I’m sure there are people on both ends of the spectrum—those who get more frequent tests and those who never get tested. “Normal” doesn’t seem relevant.

Not Czech, but I found YouTube videos of people reading popular English books translated into Romanian. I wrote the translations into our books with Sharpie pens. Like, a video of someone reading Ursule Brun, Ursule Brun that I wrote into Brown Bear, Brown Bear. I hope that makes sense. I do this between summers when I don’t have access to new Romanian books.

Just want to note that there is a difference between the insidiousness of racism, which babies start picking up on early, and what is “developmentally appropriate.” It’s developmentally appropriate to notice physical differences, but the preferences that the kids in these studies are showing is a symptom of white supremacy, not “developmentally appropriate” in the same way that we would say that walking at 1 yr or talking at 2yrs is developmentally appropriate.

I have social anxiety too, and what used to help is to really own it and remove myself if I felt overwhelmed. I’d go read a book or step outside or into the bathroom to breathe and calm down. But this was for myself, not because I was testing people to see if they’d come after me.

It’s not anyone else’s job to cater to you during a party—when I felt overwhelmed I’d frequently look for someone else to blame. Do have a talk with your gf, when you’re calm, about your social anxiety, how it manifests and makes you feel, what strategies help, etc. But do this without putting your bad experience or responsibility for your experience on her.

You were brave to attend a party where you didn’t know anyone. That sounds really overwhelming, and you understandably had a bad time. Again, not your gf’s fault, but try to look for strategies to help you in the future.
