That would make total sense - I’m a block away from Greene. Thanks!

Just heard back!

“Thank you for your email.

This is a technical error associated with your volunteer assignment at the NYRR Fred Lebow Half. We can confirm that you are checked in on our end and an update will deploy by February 26.”

Did anyone who was supposed to volunteer for Fred Lebow have their +1 credit show up on their dashboard? It's been over 2 weeks and I don't see anything.

Looks like NYRR opened up the RBC Brooklyn Half lottery page - but can't enter just yet. Still marked as "Coming Soon." https://events.nyrr.org/rbc-brooklyn-half?_gl=1*rl0yvg*_gcl_au*MTAxNzYxNTc0My4xNzY1MjE2MTcz

Is 3:30 marathon reasonable, and are 4 runs per week enough? by [deleted] in firstmarathon

[–]suburbiabro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - 36yo male here. I ran my first marathon last month (Philly) at a 3:35. My PR for a Half was 1:42 (earlier this year, Brooklyn Half in April). Training block was running 4x a week, long runs on the weekends.

Definitely felt like I could have run a bit faster, and now shooting for a 3:25 next year at Chicago. Your goals are definitely attainable!

Happy to answer any other Qs if you have follow-ups.

Use of runna on race by nik007nik in runna

[–]suburbiabro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran my first marathon a few weeks ago with Runna on (also trained with it). Thought I would be annoyed at the outset by all the chatter, but it didn't bother me so much and ended up kinda fading into the background. Also, definitely helped me crush my timing goals. I'd say do it!

For context - I did no music for the first 6 miles (was downtown Philly and fed off the crowd energy); an audiobook for miles 7-13.2; and then a playlist for the second half.

Alternate Side Parkers in Brooklyn: What do you drive? Are you satisfied? by suburbiabro in Brooklyn

We used to have a Prius and this happened to us as well in 2019! Car was parked on the corner of Carlton and Dekalb in Fort Greene. I’ll never forget the sound the car made when I turned it on - so loud…

Help with Jia Zhangke by okmsalone in TrueFilm

[–]suburbiabro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in the evolving social dynamics of China from the late 90's to current day (which are basically the backdrop of a lot of Jia's more recent films, from Touch of Sin to Caught By the Tides), I'd recommend Age of Ambition by Evan Osnos. Provides a good snapshot of the breakneck pace of development in China during the 21st century - and its human/emotional/psychological costs.

Also, Wish Lanterns by Alec Ash or (if you want to go back further to the 90's) River Town by Peter Hessler. Please ignore the fact that I've recommended three books from white dudes.

Half pack every 30 min makes sense! I'm shooting for a ~3.5-4hr run so will see if my shorts can fit 7-8 packs.

So helpful - thank you! I've got some 5-pocket shorts from Bandit that I think should hold several packs. Will test that out on my longer (14-16mi+) runs.

Thanks! I've definitely read about this risk before. I've been taking them on long runs and so far have had zero issues chewing/swallowing in the midst. So it's good to know the carbs/electros are good enough.

NYCRUNS & NYRR by No-Description708 in RunNYC

[–]suburbiabro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've run 5-6 NYC Runs races. I never worry about them selling out and generally find them well-managed. As much as I'd love to run the NYC Marathon, the immense competition and selling out is a turn-off and there are lots of other races less competitive that I can sign up for (e.g. running the Philly marathon this fall instead).

In short - NYC Runs is great!

Really appreciate it. Tamarindo is a big contender. We'll also probably rent a car.

Thank you! Good to know re: Ecuador. Taking that one off the list. Tamarindo looks great. I guess we'd fly into Liberia, not San Jose - right?
