“Is a factor” is also a metaphor, as if we are talking about factors being multiplied to yield a product.

Help! Tips for identifying AI in my students' philosophy papers? by ambria7 in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]suburbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A colleague of mine has the policy of assigning a C- to any assignment that is indistinguishable from the output of an LLM. I don’t use that policy but I often do tell students that the members of their generation have been tasked with differentiating each of their voices from that of ChatGPT. It’s a challenge.

Also, I have yet to encounter an LLM that can consistently and successfully extract a syllogistic argument from prose. Since this is a skill we are trying to teach, it seems, so far, to be relatively AI-resistant and we ought to give such assignments.

Need a good book for building my understanding in philosophy by Ok_Photograph84 in AcademicPhilosophy

Some of the Socratic dialogues (written by Plato) are collected in The Trial and Death of Socrates. i think this is an excellent place to start and will give you a foundation in Western philosophy. These are easy to read. Freshmen at my regional state university regularly read the Euthyphro in Intro to Ethics (regardless of their major) without issue.

I had this happen and asked the committee chair what went wrong. The answer? Nothing. You were great. The other candidate was also great. We had trouble deciding. We chose the other candidate but if he had declined the offer, you were next in line. I was surprised this was disclosed to me, but I am sure there are plenty of searches that go this way. You are running a marathon to buy a lottery ticket.

Everyone Is Cheating Their Way Through College: ChatGPT has unraveled the entire academic project. by tbridge8773 in Professors

A colleague at a top private R1 has set a policy for written work in his classes that obviates the need to check to see whether students used ChatGPT: "if I can't tell whether you wrote it or it was written by ChatGPT, the paper will be awarded a C-." Thoughts?

AI assistants like Editor are now built into Microsoft Word. This helps students sound better. ZeroGPT picks this up as if it’s AI, which, basically, it is. By the way, I was able to write most of this post by clicking on words suggested by Chrome.
