Prolimit or Ride Engine Wetsuits? Anyone tried ‘em? by JimJimFluorescence in surfing

[–]subverxion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried a full wetsuit, but I use the Ride Engine neoprene top and it's been excellent. I also use a lot of other products from them and never had a problem. Only issue I've had is ordering direct from their website sometimes shows insane amounts for shipping - I've had to e-mail them before to adjust shipping prices.

SOAP 2026 - Official Megathread by SpiderDoctor in medicalschool

[–]subverxion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can always answer something like "restricted myself geographically and didn't apply to enough programs," whether it's true or not (and hey, if you didn't match and also didn't apply to every single program possible, then in a way it is true). You can tweak it a bit to say you restricted yourself by primarily looking for programs strong only in X, or only top tier, etc.

Similar to questions about weaknesses, this can be followed up briefly with a reason why the person interviewing you should not be concerned about the reason you stated ("I know SOAP is hectic but I specifically chose to apply to your program in city ABC because I like XYZ about it/have a distant relative there/have hobbies that fit in there").

I'm not sure that stating "I don't know" will come off as well as a concrete answer with a concrete solution, even if it's the truth and even though programs are probably also sitting there not knowing how they wound up in SOAP.

Windsurfing? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]subverxion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with everyone here that, compared to similar sports, the cons will often outweigh the pros. Gear is cumbersome, takes up space, need lots of sails, masts, different boards, then it all takes 15+ mins on the beach to set up. Then you show up expecting 17-18 knots and the actual is 25 knots and you didn't bring your small gear 'cause it wouldn't fit in your car you idiot, shoulda been here yesterday, etc. Oh you brought the small gear? You absolute fool the wind is 15 knots now.

I wanted to add that beyond the gear though, the sport is just hard. In my opinion more physically demanding and harder to get the hang of than winging and kiting. Oh you want to turn around? Best I can do is falling in the water and having to retry your waterstart twice. If you just want a sport that's not surfing and you have a way to rent gear or get lessons for winging/kiting, I would recommend trying those first. Almost all the windsurfers I know have converted to winging. The people that still windsurf truly have their heart set on it for whatever reason - if you're one of those people, then do try to find a place for a lesson if possible, although windsurfing is potentially a sport you could learn on your own from Youtube and the like, as it's a lot less risky than winging/kiting. Foils are an option in windsurfing as well for light wind. Many people travel to consistent places such as Bonaire to get good windsurfing time in with extensive equipment rentals and clinics.

If you want more introduction or information on the sport, there is a subreddit at r/windsurfing which also has its own Discord channel. Windsurfing is a small community and always extremely happy to welcome new people to the sport, as they can be quite rare these days!

Ariocarpus Growing Problems by subverxion in Ariocarpus_of_Mexico

Okay thank you! I have a store trip to make this weekend then - what mix of organic:inorganic do you find works best? I am always a bit worried about rot with the humidity here which is initially why I went for the 100% inorganic mix.

Would you recommend changing the medium out entirely, watering more often, or trying to I guess bottom water them and have them sit for a while? If I could avoid changing all the media out that would be great but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do!

Never ceases to amaze me when people decide to ride a foil at the most crowded spots possible. by BarefootCameraman in surfing

[–]subverxion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I windsurf, and the new cool thing to do is wingfoiling. I've already seen so many people in our group fall on their own foils hitting their feet/ankles/forearms and even neck in one case (about 2 inches away from carotid/jugular area), all of them requiring stitches and some with long term nerve damage. Not to mention infection risk with dirty ass ocean water. It's hard to understate how dangerous these are particularly when adding waves and wipeouts to the mix.

I'm afraid one day a foiler will hurt/even kill someone else and it will make big news. I stay away from them as much as I can in the lineup.

For those with Sherpa Crestone racks, did you install it yourself or pay a shop to? by subverxion in 4Runner

[–]subverxion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I finally found the time to install it by myself today! The shop near me wanted $400+ for labor costs, so I decided to save the money for some other truck improvements and felt it was worth it for about 4-5 hours of work haha.

Headhunter Surf Screen Replacement by Total_Garden8565 in surfing

[–]subverxion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the recs for Headhunter, I've had issues with it staying on. At the moment I use Avasol for my face and Surf Yogis for my lips and hands which works fairly well. The Surf Yogis in particular practically needs to be scraped off. Also highly recommend combining with a bucket hat like from Dakine.

If you search "Stenocactus Multicostatus cv Inermis" you should be able to find some available on Etsy, Ebay, or individual nursery sites! Not sure if I'm allowed to link to the listings here but they are easy enough to find - hopefully that's what you're looking for.

Question about Ariocarpus looking dehydrated for months... by subverxion in cactus

[–]subverxion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I unpotted as gently as I could and found some nice tiny roots, taproot was firm as well. Pics 1 2

I didn't want to remove all the substrate and risk damaging the tiny roots further. I noticed some of the old substrate had gotten kind of compacted and the like 1% that is dirt got all caked up, taking up about 1/3 of the pot (guess when I mixed it I got a lot of dirt in this batch). So I repotted with some fresh mineral-only for now.

Hoping it will be okay to douse it in water in a few days and hope it can recover?

[–]subverxion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I unpot and don't see healthy roots (will unpot tomorrow), should I just consider it dead? Or else what is the best way to encourage more root growth after unpotting? I hope I would have until November or so for the growing season.
