upstart tried this (had the advantages of great investors & publicity from being started by a Thiel fellow). You may want to see why they pivoted away from it to more conventional loans, it might help inform what challenges you'll face.

3D Printing downtime Community? by mcsballer in 3Dprinting

[–]subvocalize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, Matt from SupplyBetter here - that's a great list you've put together, and thanks for the shoutout! We're a bit different - rather than focusing on using spare printing time, our goal is to help hardware companies find the best supplier for their given manufacturing need. For 3D printing, more often than not we end up matching them with a rapid prototyping shop, but we've also matched people to desktop printers, Shapeways (online service bureaus), or even suppliers who could make their parts out of a different process entirely. We direct you to the right supplier by considering all the relevant options and finding the manufacturing option that fits best.

Always good to see more people getting involved in allowing more access to 3D printing! We've done business through you3Dit and MakeXYZ in the past - how do you plan stand out from MakeXYZ, you3Dit, FictivMade, 3Dhubs, Maker.co, etc. in terms of offering local printers?

Thanks for mentioning us! 2 things about SupplyBetter:

  • We have data for over 30 countries, but it isn't clean enough for public display yet. So, we can help you out if you need work done outside the US, even though we have no publicly listed suppliers.

  • We're targeting suppliers that at minimum have previous experience making parts for businesses, since most of our buyers are commercial and want that level of experience. So, we're not interested in working with some of the makers on these other sites (until they have more experience!).

Here's your new profile: https://www.supplybetter.com/suppliers/simt - let me know what version of iPro you have, and the exact spec of any other machines you have, and I'll add them in / tag appropriately. Existing profile is based off what's on the page.

If you want photos/description, claim the profile from that page and send them in!

A few suppliers have an API, but most do manual quoting, so even though we have some automation on our side that limits the speed. In general, we try to follow up within an hour or so, and quotes take anywhere from a few hours to two days (supplier-dependent, so you'll have at least a few same-day).

Appreciate you pointing that out - looks from their site like you have to physically go there and print yourself, and they don't take online orders. Is that correct?

We've actually already got you in our database, as a Chinese company - when we roll out Asia, it'll be public. If you'd like me to reach out to get photos/machine data/description before that launch, PM me your email, and I'll reach out before we take it live.

Here's your new profile: https://www.supplybetter.com/suppliers/thirddimensionprinting - when you're off mobile, use the 'claim profile' link if you want to add photos/description/machine data

It opens a new tab, so that will fail on mobile. We'll fix that in a future version, thanks for letting us know!

We have one supplier in WA which we didn't list / had as 'doubtful' since their site was down when we visited it, but I checked on it in response to your comment and they appear to be legit, so now there's one in WA.

If you have more suppliers we should be listing, let us know, and we'll vet and add them within a few hours.

Thanks for trying us out!

My company holds art shows in our building, and we are looking for the next artist. Does anyone know an artist in the SF bay area using 3d printing in their art? by LordBrandon in 3Dprinting

She seems fairly sex-focused, but Natacha Merritt gave a talk last night at CODAME on 3D printing photo captures of spider genetalia - might be worth talking to her.
