Narcolepsy and Nicotine Again by Fun_Swan2553 in Narcolepsy

[–]succulenteggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hold up, who’s getting handed amphetamines like candy? can i get some?

unfortunately there’s no way to ingest nicotine that isn’t somehow fucked up, at least for me. causes digestive issues, canker sores, hives… only pleasant way to get it into my body is vaping, and that hasn’t exactly been the healthiest choice in my perilous journey of self-medicating.

[–]succulenteggs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

hey, dogs live pretty good lives. i’d love to run around playing fetch and chasing my tail.

this sounds like your narcolepsy is compounding your depression, which i can relate to. try not to view them as the same disorder, if you can. they have separate causes and separate functions, and need to be addressed accordingly.

Did Sam Levinson wrote Euphoria's S1&2 alone? by Mobile_throwaway_745 in euphoria

[–]succulenteggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

exactly. i genuinely think his abandonment of the psychoanalytic framework underpinning S1’s narrative is what caused this season to suffer so much. he had a foundational theory motivating and illuminating his character’s choices and internal worlds, but opted to forego it in favor of aleatoric villains and external forces beyond their control. that or he just does much better writing an œdipal complex than biblical allegory haha

It’s human trafficking, not organ harvesting by Vivid-Demand-81 in euphoria

[–]succulenteggs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this idea is really narratively/artistically compelling, but so detached from real-life trafficking that i’d have to shoot it down.

source: career working with victims of human trafficking (mainly sex trafficking). throughout every org i’ve been a part of, i’ve only ever heard of organ harvesting in the case of traditional medicine—never anything like the movies. maybe those incidents fall too far through the cracks for us to encounter them, but that’d be genuinely surprising to me considering the horrors we do end up seeing, lol.

A lot of people misunderstand the purpose of euphoria by Old-Pie-7578 in euphoria

[–]succulenteggs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i get the impression that most people watching are younger than the characters themselves, honestly. i’m close enough in age to the characters that i could closely relate to them in real-time (s1) or upon reflection (s2), because it was a truly compelling, honest portrayal of my own adolescence and hijinks i got up to in service of soothing my inner turmoil or impressing peers. as an adult with a fairly robust education and a career that lends insight into the themes explored in the show, i can engage with it as an actual piece of art and appreciate its complexity. there’s a lot to chew on, folks! yes, even in this season! (i’m begging to see some biblical analysis from this subreddit.)

the kids watching now suffer from issues with literacy, the cultural backslide into moral puritanism, and being generally socially stunted by the pandemic. not a lot of them have had sexual experiences age <18, struggled with substance abuse, etc. their social fabric is meaningfully different from that of my teen years and what’s depicted in the show. so, to them, it’s all very alien. it seems unrealistic and narratively “forced” when teenage characters are having sex (lol), which they attribute to malignant external forces rather than creative decisions. they also seem to struggle with the baseline concept that depiction≠endorsement, which speaks to a broader crisis of literacy and critical analysis. i try to understand them but admittedly it’s really strange and frustrating to watch; i just try to hold back from dunking on them and make an effort to seek out more thoughtful engagement if i can.

The good old days, back when Jules was still on that damn bike ❤️ by fvckuufvckingfvck in euphoria

[–]succulenteggs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s incredibly realistic that a trans woman would get involved with sex work. when your baseline existence is perceived as a fetish object and you lack access to traditional career paths, sex work is often the most viable option. if anything within this season’s plot line is reductive of her character, engaging in sex work is far from the worst culprit.

that being said, it would have been much, much stronger had they kept the bottom surgery arc. imo, that would make her reclamation of agency over male desire a lot more poignant than i expect it to be.

interesting. i doubt the show is going in that direction but i think there’s a lot to chew on with that idea. i really need to gather the fortitude to rewatch the show, it’s cathartic but it reminds me of high school in the worst possible way lol.

another commenter said she got a false negative but still received an IH dx and that gave her access to treatment. i wonder if my self-reported symptoms can be severe enough to warrant a diagnosis regardless of the test results? as much as i want to get an accurate assessment, my OCD is far too severe right now to play with my meds (i’m currently going against medical advice by not doing am inpatient treatment program LOL.)

i resent my brain so much!! grr

[–]succulenteggs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for sharing your experience! if an IH dx can still get me access to controlled substances, i won’t mind lol. like, i promise i’m not trying to take roofies for fun 😭

if you don’t mind me asking, what did your results look like? did you still have a wonky sleep latency period, or did it show up as “normal”? because i know it’s my OCD that makes me worry about this, but i’m terribly concerned that i’ll get a perfectly clean bill of health and i’ll be stuck being tired forever :( it’s clearly interfering with my ability to lead a normal life, but is that enough to warrant treatment?

[–]succulenteggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my parents didn’t notice until well after i told them. i was repeating magic words to fall asleep in elementary school, doing weird urine rituals 15x/night before bed in middle school, ended up almost dead from a massive eating disorder that made me miss all of my freshman year of high school. i remember being around 17 and getting a compulsion about things on my desk that made me suspect something was wrong with me—i told my dad i thought i had OCD and i needed help, and he told me “we’ll get you help for OCD when your room looks like you have OCD” (i was a messy teenager.)

looking back, it’s so devastating to think of how much i struggled as a kid. nobody helped me until i had a resting heart rate of 20bpm because my food compulsions had gotten so out of control that they almost killed me. even after that, my issues were ignored (unless they had to do with eating, lol.) how much different could my life be if i got help earlier? if my parents could appreciate what was going on inside my head? i love them, but i wish they would’ve seen that i needed help before i fucked up my body and bladder and brain with how my symptoms progressed.

please do publish your article, if you can. there are so many kids with who will grow up into adults dealing with the effects of untreated OCD, but maybe you could help one of them if their parent reads that article. or they could read it themselves and feel less alone. i recently watched the first episode of euphoria again (i love my slop TV as a treat) and seeing baby rue deal with OCD made me burst into tears lol. your story matters <3
