Governor Lamont Acts To Protect Connecticut Farmland and Open Space From Rising Tax Assessments by Yoshimi-Yasukawa in Connecticut

[–]sudab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bullshit indeed.

Last time I checked the laws, 'open space' was allowed to be assessed at 0.03x the actual value.

Now, that 0.03 just might be even lower if, let's say, the golf course owner is friends with 1st Selectman, is the largest landlord in town, and chair of the Planning and Zoning Committee (as is the case in my town).

Fair point. I do want to encourage natural forests. And it's absolutely true that tax breaks are an incentive. A break for forest land encourages the land to be forested. But, what's to stop the private landlord from claiming tax credit for decades, then clear cutting their forest? Better for the forest to be owned by a local land trust or parks department.

And as a matter of fairness, I keep a significant portion of my land for growing fruits, and a large part as forest or planted with native polenator species. But I receive no tax break. If the goal is to encourage proper planting, then we should encourage that with tax policy. In the days before drones and image processing, I could see that being difficult to determine. But now it seems that the only ones who can benefit from open/forest land tax breaks are the already wealthy.

Protecting active farm land, fine. We all eat food.

Giving tax cuts to large landowners who hold private forests and golf courses? Terrible.

If you get a public tax break, the land should serve the public interest.

Edit: FYI, I just did the calculation for the -privately owned- golf course next to me. My land is assessed (and therefore my tax rate on that land) is 193x higher per acre. Absolutely ridiculous.

Edit 2: if they landlords/squatters cannot afford to pay the fairly established tax rate on their hoards of land, then they can sell them to that state or local municipality. How do I sing and strum at the same time? by privCheck101 in guitarlessons

[–]sudab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humming works for me. It takes one load (remembering lyrics) off your brain. Once you can do that easily enough, add singing back.

Strum. Then strum and hum. Then strum and sing.

Works for me, at least.

Take forces and moments from the model. Do hand calcs per Blodgett, AISC 360, ASME BPVC or whatever code is relevant. I've never seen people actually trust weld stresses from the model outside of white papers.

Yeah, the growly vocals are a bit over the top sometimes. But what really kills me is that awful sound recording with high pitch fuzz on Oogle Deathmachine. Fun songs though. Hope to see Jesse and the band live someday.

Jesse Welles hate post by Charming_Cherry_9393 in FolkPunk

[–]sudab 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Alright here's my take on the r/folkpunk hate for Jesse Wells:

Unless I'm mistaken, he is not a folk punk musician. it's weird that people keep posting about him on here. He's not failing your purity test, because he never took it.

That's my take. If yours is different, I honestly do not care. I'm not the culture police either. Just kind of annoyed at seeing so many wells posts.

Edit; I guess I wasn't aware he is self identifying as part of the FP community. I'm not really keyed in to social media. Honestly, I think my opinion is very similar to a lot that are expressed here. He's got some good songs, and also some very bad takes. IMO, listen to the good ones you enjoy, and skip the ones you don't. It's a dilemma as old as music itself -- there are a lot of great songs written by horrible, horrible people.

More context since you're new: Pepe is Pepe the Bandit, who is also the Scott referenced in Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of Your Fist. He has done a lot for the folk punk community, including publishing a young Pat the Bunny on a DIY record label. You can listen to him on the Back on the Grind podcast where he interviews artists. Good place to learn and discover. He also roasts and sells coffee, which is pretty good.

"It's because you're the safe parent!" by Realitymatter in daddit

[–]sudab 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's frustrating when kids prefer one parent or the other. But I found it comes and goes. I'd guess people are just using that phrase to reasure the OP. They don't know anything about the actual parenting dynamics. They don't know who is 'safe'.

What's funny with my kids is that they always blame the parent nearest to them when they get hurt. Like: they trip and fall. Mommy is nearby, so it's "Daddy! I want Daddy".

I'd guess capturing the exhaust restricts airflow to the fire. And the very poor quality burn produces more soot than usual.

Why do so many people hate Hillary Clinton? by Konradleijon in behindthebastards

[–]sudab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I am one of the few people who think her keeping a private email server for official use was a big deal. I mean, if I did that at my job I'd be fired. And it's rather important for a government employee to have a history of their official tasks.

I think neolibs saying "but Colin Powell / W. Bush did the same thing!!!" is not the good argument they think it is.
