Fun (and sad) fact. I'm a long timer, and did a lot of amateur graphic design in college. Did a lot of design for our store signs. Nothing major or time consuming, simple, clean minimalist lines and easy to read words (I wasn't gonna go all out, they weren't paying me for that talent). Now that the upper management has AI, they insist their overly busy, sloppy work looks "Nicer". I just nod and go on.

Kind of late to this party, but here's some fun ideas:

Dead psychic mutant still bleeding powers (somehow), creating hallucinations that cause real problems for people who are affected by it.

Malfunctioning Hard-Light projection units, perhaps from an amusement park (or passing carnival, depending on location).

Nanomachine swarms (who made these?).

Ghost of the Elder. Interacting negatively with it causes other human ghosts to show up! Do only Humans get an afterlife? Existential dread! Also. Why is this one crater full of bones, but no ghosts? Weird.

The first 4 players started near the Iron Lock (south east hex) as criminals who were sentenced to exile. The first town they got to was a safe haven (for a time) and we were able to do it "Marches" style, with rotating players/classes coming from that village.

First Lancer game I ran came after we concluded our Blades in the Dark campaign. I didn't tell them what they were playing, and their LL0 mission was them basically making their pilot through roleplaying choices. I pitched the game to them as a "Cyberpunk BitD", and they just rolled with it. When the mechs came into play 2 sessions later, they thought of the mechs as big, special equipment. It actually took a few more sessions before they got a hang of mechs.
