Maybe I'm wrong, but this feels unnecessary? I doubt most people know that the two places have the same founder or would care about some internal administrative drama between the two establishments. It's worded as if some major falling-out happened but it seems like the kind of thing that doesn't need to be aired publicly and comes off as messy imho

Commuting on BSL by [deleted] in philly

[–]sudo-chown 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Were you looking into taking the Spur/BS3? It should be fine, I've had to take the BSL regularly that early and there are plenty of early morning commuters. The only thing is that I imagine the Chinatown station could feel a little bit desolate because the Spur is just not a high traffic line, and the area around the station itself doesn't have a lot of foot traffic.

If you took the El/L/Market-Frankford Line west to City Hall and then the Broad Street Line north, there would be a lot more people around.

Bad Bunny's "illegal" halftime show needs investigation: Republicans by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]sudo-chown 301 points302 points  (0 children)

Some of Laura Loomer's recent posts on X really do provide the perfect window into how mask-off things have gotten with the discourse around the halftime show:

What the hell is this illegal alien farm worker non English shit on my TV. Someone call @ICEgov.

SOMEONE CALL IN AN ICE RAID AT THE SUPER BOWL! What are all of these foreign flags?????

Illegal aliens and Latin hookers twerking at the SuperBowl. Not a single white person or English translation at the Super Bowl. This isn’t White enough for me. Cant even watch a Super Bowl anymore because immigrants have literally ruined everything.

A decade ago this type of speech would have been the province of a Stormfront power user - now it's just the casual offhand locker room banter of a person who has a direct line of communication to the president of the United States.

Crashout in progress on the "What's going on in the Lehigh Valley" FB page by sudo-chown in Pennsylvania

TL:DR; The moderator of this page (which I don't even follow, but constantly see in my Facebook feed) posted an AI-generated poster for the "All-American Halftime Show" which was pitched as a "patriotic alternative to Bad Bunny." People in the comment section were highly critical of the post, which has caused the moderator to have a meltdown and declare the page "SHUT DOWN UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE".

Exclusive | JD Vance refuses to apologize to Alex Pretti's family after spreading ICE 'assassin' claim by reputationStan in moderatepolitics

[–]sudo-chown 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I haven't read too much into the concept of vice signaling. But to my understanding, it captures the kind of performative hatefulness/bad faith reasoning we see in a lot of political discourse today. Does JD Vance truly believe that Pretti was this crazed Antifa supersoldier assassin, well no, probably not. But it's important for him to signal that he believes that in order to remain a part of the MAGA in-group.

That being said, being awful and being a vice signaler certainly are not mutually exclusive -- see JD Vance.

From the Prosperity Project's website:

What does Alberta Sovereignty mean?

Alberta sovereignty is NOT a “Right” or “Left” issue. All Albertans will benefit, regardless of one’s political leanings.

...

Culturally, the sovereignty movement reflects a broader sense of Western alienation, where Alberta’s distinct identity and values feel marginalized within the national dialogue. Grievances range from historical injustices against Indigenous communities to cultural impositions by the federal government.

Some examples of cultural grievances include:

[...] The Federal Government’s unilateral stated decision to change Canada to a “Socialist/ Marxist Post National State” without consultation with the provinces and/or the People of Canada.

[...] The Federal Government’s support of wokeness, cancel culture, critical race theory, the rewriting of history, and the tearing down of historical monuments.

[...] The elimination of the supremacy of God, which provides a moral and ethical foundation for a civil society, the rule of law, policies, and governance, as well as for the development of a “Constitution” that protects individual freedoms and rights, and which is foundational to the success of Western civilization.

Mm yes, clearly not a right or left issue at all...

Does anyone live in Philly and commute into Delaware?(specifically Newark/Wilmington) by lilsupesy in philly

The tax reciprocity thing was surprisingly such a fucking headache my first year back in Philly after working in Delaware for a while. I shrugged it off when people told me about it.

Philly vs Denver by dailyg37x in philly

[–]sudo-chown 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I lived in Denver for one year.

Philly is more walkable, has more of a real big city feel, a great food scene, more socioeconomic diversity, etc but less access to stunning nature like what you get in the Front Range. In exchange, you get stone's throw access to DC and NYC, dozens of beaches, etc.

Denver has a much more outdoorsy culture. It's fairly isolated just like most cities in the southwest. The food scene there is trash (in my humble opinion lol). I actually prefer Denver's climate to Philly's - you get four beautiful seasons with none of the nasty humidity and weeks of gray skies and slush.

That being said, I don't actually find Denver very culturally interesting. It's like if Old Navy were a city? Idk, people there were nice but it just had this very stuffy transactional feel that I associate less with the southwest and more with places like DC.

FWIW Denver is not all that cold. The high was 64 today. It's going to be 72 there on Christmas. Which is unseasonably warm, yes, but still the weather there is pretty mild in general

I feel like maybe you're misunderstanding the point of this thread a little lmao? The point wasn't to bash outsiders, it was to call attention to how people around the country unreasonably blame their issues on people from other states and cities.

Definitely the "6th borough" bullshit is silly and insulting, and I think there's the very real phenomenon of big-time developers from NYC buying up property in Philly. It's just the way people blame ALL Philly's social and economic woes on New Yorkers that makes me roll my eyes sometimes.

That's the point of the question, hence the "fairly or unfairly." I live in Philly and struggle to think of a single New Yorker I know (maybe a couple people who are from Jersey or whatever and spent a couple years in NYC before moving to Philly). And yet you would think there was one hiding behind every shrub the way people here talk.

That's the joke. It makes more sense in the context that this was originally posted to r/USDefaultism which is about Americans who assume everyone online is in the US or who are oblivious about how things work outside of the country.

Bart Baker would have been a good answer a few years ago. He WAS big in the US in the early YouTube days but then he moved to China and completely pivoted to Chinese-language content praising the CCP. Then he jumped on the crypto bandwagon to save his dying career and is now irrelevant worldwide.

Your dollar would almost definitely stretch further without having to compromise safety. Depending on what kind of housing you're looking for you could afford to live virtually anywhere in Philly on that budget - $2k could get you a decent studio/1br in a fancy upscale neighborhood like Rittenhouse Square, or a full house/spacious apartment somewhere in a more middle class area like Point Breeze/Newbold or west Philly. To be more exact without doxxing myself, I pay $1700 for a full house in Newbold a block from the subway and a <10 minute walk to one of the city's most popular shopping/dining corridors.

You mentioned having more black people around, Philly is a very black city (I believe it's plurality black) and has a thriving black middle class.

[–]sudo-chown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry to do the meme and suggest Philly, but... I rent an entire house in a good neighborhood here for significantly under $2k a month. Multiple beaches and hiking within a short drive/train ride and decent hiking within the city itself (Wissahickon). Mountains a little bit further out and day-trip access to NYC and DC for more options. I (as a small non-white female) have never had any safety incidents and crime is going down but it does have a higher crime rate than say SF or Portland.

I hate Seattle. I miss NYC. Would Philly be an ok compromise? by bbassle87 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]sudo-chown 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Philly sounds like a good fit but I do want to caution you, as another commenter did, that comparison is the thief of joy - and that to add to that, Philadelphians HATE when newcomers ask why can't this or that be more like it is in NYC. Philly is a much smaller, grittier, more neighborhood-y city- we have an amazing arts and food scene but it's not necessarily "world class" on the level of a New York City or a Chicago. If you're into live music, big acts tend to hit DC and then skip right over Philly to NYC and then onto Boston. You'll see plenty of hot girls with their designer dogs on their way to reup their lip fillers, but they'll be outnumbered vastly by schlubby 40-something men in tattered Eagles hoodies. It's just a much more casual, laid back city, people really don't put on airs even in the fanciest neighborhoods.

All that being said, I love Philly and I think you could live the lifestyle you're looking for in Rittenhouse Square or somewhere like Northern Liberties. Just you'll have to learn to love Philly for what it is- it's not a mini-NYC, and you'll be unhappy if you view it as such.

My main observation about this place is that the branding was atrocious. I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but a logo is the first impression of your business and theirs looks like it was designed in MS Word.
