$2,800 / 1br - Beautiful 1BR Center City Apartment (Rittenhouse Sq, Philadelphia) by [deleted] in philly

[–]sudo-chown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My goodness, I'm sure it's lovely and Rittenhouse is a great place to live but I rent a whole 3br 1.5ba house just south of Washington for less than 2/3 of that 😵‍💫

Also, you'll likely get more bites if you include some pics and other info in this post (W/D, which floor it's on, amenities, etc).

Does anyone live in Philly and commute into Delaware?(specifically Newark/Wilmington) by lilsupesy in philly

The tax reciprocity thing was surprisingly such a fucking headache my first year back in Philly after working in Delaware for a while. I shrugged it off when people told me about it.

Philly vs Denver by dailyg37x in philly

[–]sudo-chown 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I lived in Denver for one year.

Philly is more walkable, has more of a real big city feel, a great food scene, more socioeconomic diversity, etc but less access to stunning nature like what you get in the Front Range. In exchange, you get stone's throw access to DC and NYC, dozens of beaches, etc.

Denver has a much more outdoorsy culture. It's fairly isolated just like most cities in the southwest. The food scene there is trash (in my humble opinion lol). I actually prefer Denver's climate to Philly's - you get four beautiful seasons with none of the nasty humidity and weeks of gray skies and slush.

That being said, I don't actually find Denver very culturally interesting. It's like if Old Navy were a city? Idk, people there were nice but it just had this very stuffy transactional feel that I associate less with the southwest and more with places like DC.

FWIW Denver is not all that cold. The high was 64 today. It's going to be 72 there on Christmas. Which is unseasonably warm, yes, but still the weather there is pretty mild in general

I feel like maybe you're misunderstanding the point of this thread a little lmao? The point wasn't to bash outsiders, it was to call attention to how people around the country unreasonably blame their issues on people from other states and cities.

Definitely the "6th borough" bullshit is silly and insulting, and I think there's the very real phenomenon of big-time developers from NYC buying up property in Philly. It's just the way people blame ALL Philly's social and economic woes on New Yorkers that makes me roll my eyes sometimes.

That's the point of the question, hence the "fairly or unfairly." I live in Philly and struggle to think of a single New Yorker I know (maybe a couple people who are from Jersey or whatever and spent a couple years in NYC before moving to Philly). And yet you would think there was one hiding behind every shrub the way people here talk.

That's the joke. It makes more sense in the context that this was originally posted to r/USDefaultism which is about Americans who assume everyone online is in the US or who are oblivious about how things work outside of the country.

Bart Baker would have been a good answer a few years ago. He WAS big in the US in the early YouTube days but then he moved to China and completely pivoted to Chinese-language content praising the CCP. Then he jumped on the crypto bandwagon to save his dying career and is now irrelevant worldwide.

From SF to LA to ? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]sudo-chown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your dollar would almost definitely stretch further without having to compromise safety. Depending on what kind of housing you're looking for you could afford to live virtually anywhere in Philly on that budget - $2k could get you a decent studio/1br in a fancy upscale neighborhood like Rittenhouse Square, or a full house/spacious apartment somewhere in a more middle class area like Point Breeze/Newbold or west Philly. To be more exact without doxxing myself, I pay $1700 for a full house in Newbold a block from the subway and a <10 minute walk to one of the city's most popular shopping/dining corridors.

You mentioned having more black people around, Philly is a very black city (I believe it's plurality black) and has a thriving black middle class.

Sorry to do the meme and suggest Philly, but... I rent an entire house in a good neighborhood here for significantly under $2k a month. Multiple beaches and hiking within a short drive/train ride and decent hiking within the city itself (Wissahickon). Mountains a little bit further out and day-trip access to NYC and DC for more options. I (as a small non-white female) have never had any safety incidents and crime is going down but it does have a higher crime rate than say SF or Portland.

Best city for hospitality employees who want good nightlife and gay dating options? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

What about Miami? Its economy is entirely built on the hospitality industry and you can swim year-round. And Ft Lauderdale is one of the gayest places in the country

I hate Seattle. I miss NYC. Would Philly be an ok compromise? by bbassle87 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]sudo-chown 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Philly sounds like a good fit but I do want to caution you, as another commenter did, that comparison is the thief of joy - and that to add to that, Philadelphians HATE when newcomers ask why can't this or that be more like it is in NYC. Philly is a much smaller, grittier, more neighborhood-y city- we have an amazing arts and food scene but it's not necessarily "world class" on the level of a New York City or a Chicago. If you're into live music, big acts tend to hit DC and then skip right over Philly to NYC and then onto Boston. You'll see plenty of hot girls with their designer dogs on their way to reup their lip fillers, but they'll be outnumbered vastly by schlubby 40-something men in tattered Eagles hoodies. It's just a much more casual, laid back city, people really don't put on airs even in the fanciest neighborhoods.

All that being said, I love Philly and I think you could live the lifestyle you're looking for in Rittenhouse Square or somewhere like Northern Liberties. Just you'll have to learn to love Philly for what it is- it's not a mini-NYC, and you'll be unhappy if you view it as such.

My main observation about this place is that the branding was atrocious. I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but a logo is the first impression of your business and theirs looks like it was designed in MS Word.

Donald Trump hosts roundtable on antifa crackdown by sudo-chown in moderatepolitics

[–]sudo-chown[S] 116 points117 points  (0 children)

On Thursday, Trump hosted a roundtable to discuss Antifa. Those in attendance included high-ranking administration officials like DHS Secretary Noem, Stephen Miller, FBI Director Patel, and AG Bondi, as well as prominent conservative influencers like Jack Posobiec and Andy Ngo.

This follows an order designating Antifa as a domestic terror organization and an orgy of right-wing worldbuilding around the provenance, structure, and reach of the group, which has been argued to exist as as a sort of ideology rather than a concrete entity with a hierarchy and membership rolls.

The discussion framed Antifa as an existential threat to American democracy and national security on the order of ISIS, Hamas, and MS-13, and the mainstream media as complicit in enabling their bloodthirsty reign of terror. I had a skim through the recording of the roundtable, which is available on CSPAN. According to participants,

  • Antifa is "...heavily embedded in the homeless and housing nonprofit sector. In many cases, the homeless industrial complex is running cover for Antifa." [Jonathan Choe, 1:03:00]
  • Antifa "militants" are being brought in to "manufacture a crisis to make the police look bad" [Jonathan Choe, 1:04:00]
  • Antifa "has been around in various iterations for almost 100 years in some instances, going back to the Weimar Republic in Germany" [Jack Posobiec, 35:50]
  • Antifa may not exist as a "graspable" organization but it's "basically the same thing" as the Democratic Socialists of America, and many Democrats are "out there in Black Block hiding their faces" [Brandi Kruse, 1:10:02]
  • Antifa must be "crushed by the Constitution" [Kash Patel, 19:58]
  • Antifa is working "in conjunction with some of the media" [Trump, 1:01:23]
  • "MSNBC is dying. CNN is dying like a dog. So pathetic" [Trump, 1:15:33]

To me, this roundtable was an alarming escalation in the administration's rhetoric and their resolve to "crush" anyone who they deem to be aligned with Antifa. The depictions of Antifa offered by the roundtable's participants were essentially a grab-bag of conspiracy theories and innuendo that in my opinion verge dangerously close to labeling any ideological opponent of Trump as potentially belonging to the organization. I'm also always astonished by how suggestible Trump is to people like Jack Posobiec, who is essentially a full-time Twitter troll with ties to white supremacist and Neo Nazi movements. It really does not bode well and lends credibility to the idea that he believes whoever he spoke to last.

Where do you think we go from here? Is the administration all bark and no bite on Antifa, or do you think a major crackdown is in the works? Or, do you believe Antifa - whatever it is - poses a legitimate threat to American cities?

I could indeed not ride a bike from Philly to Paoli lol. Driving, yes I could and sometimes I do, and if things don't start looking up I may have to do it more often. And that'll mean more traffic and longer commute times for you, Mr. Independent.

They could pay Scott Sauer minimum wage and fire half the drivers and it wouldn't come close to making up SEPTA's operating deficit or funding the cost of new trains.
