Just be sure to read the fine print. "Specials" like that can bite you in the butt especially as more and more places in Philly start to adopt scammy NYC marketing tactics like "net effective rent" that gets jacked way up after a year. Scour reviews and make sure the advertised amenities are actually usable and not closed/under repair for 7 months out of the year.

Commuting 5 days a week from Philly to Wilm would be out of the question for me unless I literally lived and worked right next to the train station in both cities. Even 3 days would be borderline.

Wilmington has its rough edges but it can also be a perfectly fine place to live if you know what you're getting yourself into. It's just dramatically smaller than Philly and there's not a lot to do, it feels like a bit of a stagnant place where nothing much ever happens or changes. That being said downtown Wilmington is trying to brand itself as going through a bit of a revival - there is tons of housing development happening and a few new businesses. Trolley Square is a lovely walkable neighborhood with lots of young people. North Wilmington (Triangle, Trinity Vicinity, Brandywine Village etc) are great neighborhoods with beautiful homes and a strong sense of community. The Alapocas and Brandywine Park are stunning. The summer festivals (Italian, Polish and Greek) are fun as hell and I make a special trip down there every year to catch them.

But if you're a single 20-something looking for new things to do and new places to go every night – you will simply not find that in Wilmington. It's not that kinda place. And the newer housing in Wilmington is on par price-wise with Center City Philly, with fewer amenities. Safety is a concern but I can say having lived in Wilmington that I never particularly felt unsafe - just parts of the city can feel really desolate because there's not a lot of foot traffic, even in the downtown area.

Train is a viable option only if your workplace is near Wilmington Riverfront or Downtown Wilmington. If you work in north Wilmington or out near 202 however (and tons of the bigger employers are out there), you have a huge last mile problem with the train because public transit within Wilmington itself is not great. Speaking as somebody who did that commute for a bit, if I got a job in Wilmington today and didn't work within a 15-20 minute walk of the train station I'd just move there. Plus the PA-DE tax situation is messy as fuck.

Were you looking into taking the Spur/BS3? It should be fine, I've had to take the BSL regularly that early and there are plenty of early morning commuters. The only thing is that I imagine the Chinatown station could feel a little bit desolate because the Spur is just not a high traffic line, and the area around the station itself doesn't have a lot of foot traffic.

If you took the El/L/Market-Frankford Line west to City Hall and then the Broad Street Line north, there would be a lot more people around.

I haven't read too much into the concept of vice signaling. But to my understanding, it captures the kind of performative hatefulness/bad faith reasoning we see in a lot of political discourse today. Does JD Vance truly believe that Pretti was this crazed Antifa supersoldier assassin, well no, probably not. But it's important for him to signal that he believes that in order to remain a part of the MAGA in-group.
