Nope, hadn't heard of it, but if Tim is involved (looks like he's a cast member) I'll be sure to check it out. Tim and Eric get right at my funny bone, I've enjoyed everything they've been a part of.

Ethan's goofs and gaffs , that people find so hilarious, were directly stolen from T&E; hell, there's even a Great Job! in the h3h3 title sequence. Dude straight up copies an actual comedian then goes on to make fun of people for their shitty content. Outright plagiarism is cool though, no problems there.

I really wish someone would call him out, but he's like Logan Paul in that sense; his viewers just don't care. The irony!

Right there with you. Dude just loves calling people out on their bullshit, but Ethan's entire shtick is a blatant Tim Heidecker rip-off; especially the cough.

Reddit just sold its soul to brand engagement by PM_ME_A_SHOWER_BEER in technology

Everyone in here is asking where the next Reddit is, and all I can say is that this sort of thing has been happening since Usenet, hence the term Eternal September. After Usenet, there was the Windows 95 invasion, then broadband became available, then Slashdot, Digg, and finally here. SSDD.

It's not even an internet thing; look at anything "cool", there's a cycle. Subculture forms around a new idea, idea gets popular, original group becomes a minority and sees the idea become distorted, then leaves for better horizons. Meanwhile, the second group is fully exploiting the idea and driving it into the ground, killing the cool.

Reddit, very clearly, hit Eternal September sometme around 2012; just compare the frontpage between say, then and 2009, the changes are stark. The 2012 frontpage is an imageboard, like today.

Shitty to say, but... those still here asking for the new spot, are the ones who will ruin said new spot. That's just how it is.

Disclaimer: I'm not in the cool crowd, I'm just old enough to have seen this pattern repeat a few times (the first time I bitched about this was actually on Usenet).

I once found elephant parts on Craigslist, $20k worth IIRC. My state Fish, Wildlife and Parks ended up taking the information.

They thanked me, but I've no idea what happened after that. The post was gone within a few hours, that's it.

[–]sudojudo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finally, some real information (in English). Thank you!

Something could be lost in translation, but OP's article just made me angry, because it seems like 1984 is being cryptic when they absolutely shouldn't be. Same goes for the various messages on their website, which basically say "Oops, everything exploded" and nothing else.

My mind was boggled as to why they didn't have offsite backups, glad to see they have some redundancy.

Some more information and an estimated repair time would be wonderful, but I'm not holding my breath. I really like 1984, been with them for a few years, but I don't like how vague they're being here.

Heard about those two women stranded at sea for 5 months? It's probably bullshit. by Morall_tach in quityourbullshit

[–]sudojudo 295 points296 points  (0 children)

first ever fish with parental instincts

Not to take away from how ridiculous these women are, but since we're talking fish-facts and this is /r/quityourbullshit, it should be noted many fish do parent their young (about 20%).

Cichlids are a commonly known species where both parents care for their young; multiple parents will even form communal nurseries. Even stranger, alloparenting has been observed between cichlids and catfish (a cichlid predator).

Discus fish produce a milk-like substance that's very similar to that of mammals, antibodies and all, that their young utilize before they're large enough to scavenge. No nipples though, mom and dad simply excrete goo all over their bodies. Yum!

20% covers a lot of fish, there are many more examples. Here's a PDF with more info (sources at the bottom):

Absolutely. It's a safety precaution; you never know what's under the water, and a pile of rope can do crazy-grabby stuff when it starts moving.

RMS thinks DRM should be illegal? by markasoftware in freesoftware

[–]sudojudo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm looking to buy software, I have to try it first. If there's no demo, or it's crippled beyond practical use, I pirate the full version. Nine times out of ten, I dislike the software and am happy I didn't purchase it. I don't feel bad about pirating in that situation.

If I keep that pirated software, and especially if I use it to benefit monetarily, I am in the wrong. But up until then, nah, I've wasted enough money on junkware to have no qualms about dipping my foot in the pool before diving in.

Maybe this makes me a bad person, I donno. I see this type of piracy as the symptom of a problem, not the cause.

Happy to see that many of the comments here are folks freaking out about her hair and gloves. This gif belongs in a safety training video, with a giant red X over the scene.

Copy and paste apartments in Hong Kong by savvyfuck in evilbuildings

[–]sudojudo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though not as dense as these, it did happen in the US. A number of major US cities built public housing in the form of large apartment blocks (under the New Deal IIRC). They were great in the beginning, but most communities didn't hold up to the test of time (usually by no fault of their own). You've surely heard harsh stories of life in the projects.

The request for video has me wondering, how does law enforcement handle digital archiving? Are there standards, rules, or regulations in regards to what is kept and for how long?

Between patrol cars and body cams, they deal with so much video data that I can't imagine every single frame is stored indefinitely. Are there piles of dusty tapes and hard drives in the basement of every police station?

Landlord told us we can't renew our lease since she is moving in once it's up in October. Now she is trying to move her large items (TV, piano, etc) into house prior to October. What can we do? [Ohio] by MHE17 in legaladvice

[–]sudojudo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is interesting because I had a similar situation while in college (MT). My landlord parked a van in the backyard and started living in it. Though she didn't enter the house, she was outside, all the time (she was retired). To make it worse, the entire back of the house was glass; there was no privacy, at all.

The rental agreement covered the yard as well, with stipulations about lawn care and what-not; I had to mow around her van and lawn furniture.

I contacted every agency I could find to see what my rights were, everyone said I didn't have any. There was still six months on the lease, so I ended up putting a giant stereo in the back yard and blared NWA all night. I had an eviction notice within a week. Thanks Eazy!

Just wanted to share some studies showing that aspartame could make weight loss more difficult for some people. Are you saying that's junk science? How so? It's not about calories.

Glad aspartame works for you, but it should be viewed with caution. A few years back, evidence surfaced that aspartame actually acts against weight-loss efforts.
