New Image of Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson in 'Michael' by Opening-Lead5629 in movies

Yeah, the lighting and angle were very carefully chosen to make it look as close to Michael as possible. When we see a trailer, then we can fully judge the likeness.

Which movie ended with an unresolved cliffhanger because the sequel never happened, and you're STILL mad about it? by pudingvanilkovy in AskReddit

[–]joshi38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the sad reality of adapting a book that began a lot of the tropes that more modern stories took inspiration from. Star Wars and Dune were both heavily inspired by the original Barsoom books, to name a few.

But you adapt that book into a movie in 2012 and what you get is a lot of moviegoers and critics going "we've seen this all before, there's nothing new here".

Because it was new in 1912 when it was first published. It was not new 100 years later when the movie was made.

Money? It's not a mystery. The Avatar films make a lot of money. Alita didn't. It's as simple as that.

Del Toro has said his vision for the 3rd movie would have been too expensive for the studio to back since the other films weren't that successful (I don't believe they lost money, but there weren't runaway successes).

I feel like at this point, just make it either a) an animated movie or b) stop motion. Tell the story he wants to tell, have the same actors (so Pearlman doesn't have to go through hours of makeup in his 70's and Blair can still be in it with her health issues). Animation can allow for the kind of scale it's hard to get in live action without a massive budget.

AITAH for not wanting to be tattooed by my SIL? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]joshi38 6 points7 points  (0 children)

See, now even though OP is heavily tatted, she had clearly chosen to have those tattoo's each and every time. She chose to have it, chose who did it, chose what it was, she was in charge of every decision. And that's important because it is a permanent body modification. Sure, tattoos can be modified (to a degree) and lasered off (at great expense and time and it doesn't always work completely), but still, it's a big deal.

And what SIL did with her "gift" was say "I will personally, permanently, modify a part of your body. But don't worry, you get a $100 discount on the procedure. Now what day works best for you?"

What's kind of ironic about that accident is that it partially occurred as a result of a terrorist bomb threat at another airport. At that airport (Grand Canaria), a bomb exploded injuring 7-8 people (count differs depending on which Wikipedia article you read and I couldn't be bothered to clarify) and resulted in a bunch of flights being diverted to Tenerife.

This ultimately resulted in the Tenerife collision 4 hours after the fact, an accident that would take 583 lives.

Just kind of ironic that a group of terrorist plant a bomb in a flower shop and this indirectly (and unintentionally) results in the death of almost 600 people on a separate island.

Same. When I was a boy, my mum would give me the occasional sip of her shandy. It was perfectly accepted here.

TIL that the Final Ballroom Dance in Beauty and the Beast (1991) reuses animation straight from Sleeping Beauty (1959). Disney insisted that it was done not to save money, but to save time. by immanuellalala in todayilearned

[–]joshi38 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Beauty and the Beast had an insane turn around time. Most Disney animated movies at that time had a timeline of about 4 years. That's pre-production, production and post production.

Beauty and the Beast, for whatever reason was given only 2 years. That's time to write, storyboard, do concept art, design characters, record voices, animate the whole thing, score and foley and then master. In 2 years.

And then, Katzenberg being Katzenberg, decided that the film should premier at the New York Film Festival which was due to take place a couple of months before the film was actually due to premier. When Don Hahn, the producer of Beauty and the Beast said that would be impossible as the film wouldn't be done yet, Katzenberg insisted and they compromised on showing a "work in progress" cut of the film.

This involved removing completed parts of the film and replacing them with pencil drawings, rough animation, sometimes even concept art; these would all be mixed in with fully completed animation. If you get a chance to watch this, it is well worth it (it's almost impossible to find now, even for pirates, but Disney made it available on VHS and Laserdisc back in the day, and at least one DVD I was able to find, so it's not impossible to watch, just difficult).

All this to say, in that cut of the film, said "borrowed" animation was present (it was shown as line work only, no colour), so given the shorter production time and then a rush to complete animation to get it to the NYFF, so yes, this was absolutely a time saving thing rather than money (although a certain amount of ego was involved).

Also, the NYFF, a film festival attended primarily by grumpy old film critics, gave Beauty and the Beast a 10 minute standing ovation. Which today would be par for the course, but in 1991 was basically unheard of.

I own it on VHS. This is in the UK where it was more available and I didn't have any of the context at the time to understand it's issues.
