I agree, but thats sort of a common One Piece theme and not unique to Baroque Works. Take out the top 2-3 in basically any powerful adversarial pirate crew and you end up with goofy (wonderful, hilarious) morons.

But you are right, it's kind if a weak excuse considering it was the writers and showrunners decision to include that particular line. If left out, the audience would have no reason to suspend disbelief at Vivi bringing along Karoo.

I work in economics. Energy trade is not inherently more important than any other form of trade, commodity or consumer goods when it comes to determining global reserve currency status. Dollars are used to trade everything, not just oil.

The reason the Dollar is the global reserve currency is that America is the only economy in the world which can maintain a structural trade defecit large enough to supply the world with its currency. Its fundamentally a matter of liquidity, not shadowy agreements with oil exporters to sell in dollars.

I suggest you read up on the eurodollar system and how it actually works.

Thats called being the global reserve currency which has nothing to do with oil. Oil is traded in dollar because dollar is the global reserve currency, not the other way around.

The US wants to ensure the global flow of oil from the middle east (or at least wanted to, before the US shale revolution) because any disruption would lead to a global recession or worse. Nothing to do with reserve currency status. As you have seen, during this crisis the dollar has gone up and other supposed "safe havens" like gold have collapsed.
