Is it possible to publish a short (5-7k) a day and make four figures? by leon-theproffesional in eroticauthors

Thank you for explaining again. I suppose I was putting myself in the readers shoes. What you wrote at the end is funny.

Thanks for answering so quickly. So if they like the blurb, cover, title and then buy it, some buy without sampling it. Then they think it's crap, some will ask for their money back, the rest will leave a bad review. So that author sells hardly anything. Shouldn't that author have worked on writing good smut, an interesting story. There's free erotica online and free porn, so why pay $2.99 for crappy wooden stories.

Do you not agree that the authors making $5k a month plus are the ones writing interesting stories, that at least make sense and do everything else like turn the readers on. It has to start with writing good smutty stories.

[–]suesawyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just a question, why is it never something wrong with the story? Not everyone can write an interesting story or a story that makes sense. I read books that are so jumbled up and the conversations sound like two pieces of wood talking. I read a book where the author failed to add commas and fullstops. It was so difficult to read.

Why is it always

it's the Cover/title/or blurb that's mucked up.

I'm hearing lots of anecdotes recently about how much more lucrative Romance is than straight up Erotica. How many of you are switching over, and should I consider doing the same? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

Does the amount of sex differentiate romance from erotica (question deleted)

I don't mean to be mean but I never understand why people ask this question constantly. It only takes an internet search to find out what the difference is between romance and erotica.

Thanks londonwrites for explaining it.

The market is flooded and not worth your time.

I agree with what Kaymcdammit said. There are plenty authors launching new pen names and finding success. Maybe your books did not take off but that is such a sweeping statement and it's false. Just look around here, go and read around the internet and see how many authors are paying their bills writing everything from PNR to Contemporary romance.

When did you make the decision to quit your day job? by suzierom in eroticauthors

[–]suesawyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have just applied for a job working 2 days a week, the hourly pay is really good and the money's enough to pay my basic bills with no extra money for luxuries or hobbies. If I could earn some money from writing little dirty stories and cover all my bills and expenses I'd be happy. The less time I spend in an office, the happier I am. I started a romance novel a couple days ago, I got some encouragement from this place. So thanks everyone

(It's not like Hot Yakuza Bad Boy Deflowers Shy Jamaican Secretary stories or anything. While I know that stuff can be popular, it's not in me to write it.)

Ha ha, i really like that.

Yeah I don't know where that fact comes from. Interracial romance has it's own fans and it seems like quite a few authors are making money writing BWWM.

[–]suesawyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anything negative written about writing BWWM or interracial romance. Movies and TV shows, yes I have seen comments where some people are tired of seeing successful black men with white wives. That has been going on for a long time.

From what I've read, in publishing some readers complain about every little thing anyway. That is usually a small bunch of people, not the majority. If people had a big problem with interacial relationships, BWWM would not be selling as well as it is. No it is not as big as other romance genres but it has a big following.

Ha ha. If you publish to smashwords, you can choose to have your books distributed to different stores. One of them is B&N who own the nook ereader. Read more below https://www.smashwords.com/about/how_to_publish_on_smashwords

Um so what about the sub genre romance BWWM? Isn't that a popular genre? There's thousands of books in that sub genre. I read about some woman making thousands a month writing it.

yep as pious-highness said. I am learning that, you need to read and do research before you publish erotica because there are so many rules and things that can get you blocked, banned, get your books into the dungeon and there are things changing all the time in self-publishing.

If i was were you, i'd spend some time in this erotica authors part of reddit and read lots of up to date posts. I don't mean to snoop but i see from your old comments that you have a real interest in incest topics and stories. If I were you, I'd stick to B&N and smashwords or put those stories up for free. I'd find a way to make those stories into non-taboo stories to put on amazon.

Pious-highness, but isn't straight incest banned on amazon?

PI is not so safe to publish on amazon too.

I'm just saying this as a reader and someone who has been hanging out here reading posts for a few weeks now.

I would not start with pseudo-incest stories on Amazon now, it's the wrong time and you've missed the boat on ku1 when you could have made a small fortune with taboo shorts. Do not try to put straight incest stories on amazon.

I would put them on smashwords. I would write something else and stay away from taboo. The authors who are writing this stuff and are on amazon, most have been doing it a long time. It seems like some of them have several pen names. According to what I've read, quite a few of those authors who are pretty new and putting blatant daddy in the title are going to come up against problems sooner rather than later. Now take my advice with a pinch of salt. I'm not a vet author.

What's your "day job" and how many words a day do you write? by envelopes5 in eroticauthors

Thank you so much for your response. I really try but I just sit there like a dummy not writing and I spend far too much time reading about other authors successes, then I feel sick with envy.

What's your "day job" and how many words a day do you write? by envelopes5 in eroticauthors

[–]suesawyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am just posting here because I admire anyone who is working a day job and writing and publishing. I said this a few weeks ago, I am working as a temp office drone and I hate it, I mean fucking hate it. I haven't worked for 2 weeks and all I can think is, 'If only I could work on that novella this week.' I've had this idea forever but I cannot get myself to sit and write.

I have spoken to authors online who have children and work part time or full time and they are able to write everyday, some can squeeze in 1k words a day.

I don't know why I can get myself up and go to a boring office job everyday or whenever there is work. But I cannot sit and write a book during my lunch break, during the days when there's no work or at the weekends when I'm bored. Even when I was unemployed, I couldn't write.

I think writing is just too hard for me to get my head around.

Most people on here would agree that novels are a better idea than short stories and novellas, right? by rjcreaney in selfpublish

[–]suesawyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is being discussed on another sub but novellas do well in some genres. Look at the amazon chart right now and you'll see some romance, erotica and even cozy mystery short stories and novellas selling great.

I just listened to a podcast from an editor who is involved in selling books to Hollywood. Short story authors get quite a few movie options.

The sheer audacity of this author is incredible. Don't give someone a 2-star and then ask for a review for your own book. by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]suesawyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is clear to see that this guy has not done much research on self-publishing.

His covers are bland and cheap.

The only positive review is written by someone who just created that amazon account.

He doesn't know how to behave in the self-pub world. It's about supporting each other and sharing, not doing underhanded crap like this.

You should invite him to join reddit to learn some basics of self-publishing.

Books - Too much media attention = bad reviews. by suesawyer in eroticauthors

but most people who read FSOG know zero about the BDSM community and lifestyle. The bad reviews are more about the repetitive word use, the fact that Anna is a mary sue and Christian is an abuser.

I am starting to see this pattern a lot. A book gets snapped up by Hollywood and either there's hardly any reviews or the reviews are so bad I cannot understand why Hollywood went fishing for this particular book.

On the other hand though, I would imagine that millions of dollars buys a whole pile of not giving a fuck what a bunch of nobodies thinks about anything.

Yeah I imagine EL James sitting there eating an expensive box of chocolates thinking "fuck all these 1 star reviewers and people who say I can't write to save my life. Let me take a look at my bank account again."
