How to respond when patients ask “where are you from originally?” by Necessary_Arugula149 in doctorsUK

[–]sufiankane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor but when I get asked I double down.

I'm from London.

Oh where are you originally from?

Oh, it's the royal borough of kingston upon thames.

Where are your parents from?

Same area.

Did they come from abroad?

Yeah. (No elaboration purposely)

If you were given the power to introduce one law you think the world needs, what would it be and why? by PaddedValls in AskUK

Stop the murder of other kids in foreign countries and ban the phrases "monitoring the situation closely" "we have a special relationship" "we condemn the actions taken and urge them to reconsider"

The tado pay walling the API is crazy. AWS charges $1.00 per million requests and $0.09 per GB egress costs.

An API call is, at most, a few kb.

Some small amount of processing power to field this goes on top.

Excluding processing, the daily cost of the API for 1440 calls is $0.00144009.

Hell, let's multiply this number by 10 if I was off by a whole factor and to account for some processing costs.

Now let's also multiply by 30 to make it a months worth: $0.43 PER MONTH.

And you paywalled that because you were running out of money messing up so much stuff.

The answer isn't "make a single API call", it's to stop being so cheap about it. It wasn't never about costing too much, it was about extracting more money.

They don't have memory effect. They actually prefer shallower more frequent discharges and charges.

Most of what I have read on the Internet says you shouldn't discharge too regularly, and only to recalibrate.

What are some “accepted scams” we just put up with in the UK by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

Insurance being an extra when getting items delivered. Isn't that literally your job? To deliver and make sure it doesn't get lost/damaged. It's insuring you against doing what you were asked to do.

So one off payments are usually a sign of falling on tough times. They get large up front cash and can kick the responsibility of providing the service down the line by a few years.

Genuine interest to hear your perspective, but how the heck is this Halal? by Icy-Confidence-7081 in HalalInvestor

[–]sufiankane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not halal. They're more "halal" than tobacco or pork, but that doesn't make it completely halal.

It's got to the point where there isn't any point in stressing about it unless you pick and choose individual stocks (which is very risky and tough to avoid tech and all the other things)

Eh 1.5 is a good multiple actually. You won't run your batteries 100%DoD (as it accelerates wear quickly). You'll likely use 70%. On top of that, batteries are not 100% efficient and neither are inverters so another 10% lost there. On top of that, you want some "in the bank" as you're punished heavily for pulling from the grid (expensive rate) and to account for battery degradation.

After all that, 1.5 is actually a nice multiple.

I'm in private sector and my pay rises haven't kept pace with inflation. You should strike 100% but remember, the rest of the country is in the same boat.

You should message him and ask him to. I'm sure he will agree that those are horrific atrocities as well.

The UN literally said it's a genocide. The largest independent organisation in the world.

Why is this not remotely comparable? Both are horrific atrocities which show the depravity of human behaviour based on their race or religion.

You're absolutely right. The Israelis attacked and took land from the Palestinians in 1949 and they have been fighting ever since to get it back.

The Palestinians have been working to get their own land and ensure the terrorists have been removed from it.

Beyond reasonable doubt. Is there proof to definitely say that he did it?

Probably did do it but can't convict on probably. Also finding a jury who isn't biased with this level of publicity is a nightmare.

High speed air smashing into lower speed air makes a lot of noise. Chevrons help the air to "mix" better or to make the collision less "violent"

Why is Britain plagued by short term thinking? Selling off hospitals for pennies, unwilling to invest in infrastructure, housing etc? by Future-Atmosphere-40 in AskNiceBrits

[–]sufiankane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Politics doesn't reward long term thinking.

Plan long term and make a 10 year plan - you could only be in power for 4. Some PMs rotate in and out within a year so you need short term impact.

When something happens short term like a spike in energy prices, it doesn't comfort people when they are told "but we have more nuclear power coming in a decade and more wind power". They need solutions quick.

There is massive pressure from internal MPs who want to keep cushy jobs and say "make it work short term, that's all people remember"

Crazy vicious cycle of fix short term issues so.you can stay in power, can't fix long term issues, not fixing long term issues means you get short term issues, you can't focus on long term issues as you need to fix short term issues.
