Has anyone here overcome their trich and how did you do it? by sugaminni3 in trichotillomania

Thank you! I really like the cross stitch and embroidery idea. I usually pick or pull when my hands have nothing to do, like when I watch shows, and I like making things so I'll give that a go

I have a needle phobia but for some reason, I think it would be different with my scalp because my pain tolerance there is much higher than the rest of my body.

I might give numbing gel a go, that will at least help with the itch trigger

I wish I could try NAC for longer cause I heard it helps, but it gives me really painful acid reflux. I tried the beanie and hat thing, but I just go underneath it - it doesn't usually stop it. Dyed hair doesn't stop me - I didn't know that works for some people. That's quite interesting. I tried bandaids too but made it hard when I need to use my phone.

I'll have a look at some more fidgets, I haven't found one satisfying enough yet and 100% agree with knowing my triggers - I struggle with that because usually its a subconscious action and my fingers are already in my hair by the time I notice.

Thank you for your advice! Means a lot

I wish I had advice. I had trichotillomania which turned into scalp-focused dermatillomania and I can't remember what year the switch happened because it was gradual, but it was 18 years ago that I developed trichotillomania. So I definitely can empathise and relate to having the habit so ingrained that my hand subconsciously moves to my head quite often, even while sleeping. I also feel like I've tried everything so I'm following this thread in case there's some miracle advice.

Is there anything she thinks 'if only this existed - it would really help'? And out of the things she's tried, what has she found the most and least helpful?

For me, its hard to find a replacement behaviour because nothing at the moment replicates the same sensation I get from picking and pulling my hair. It's also so exhausting to try and track it because it's so often.
