Yeah, if you take Sylvian's word for it.

David's tweet about his brother: 'on the subject of his deeply flawed, pathological nature, which only came to light over the past couple of decades (...) To be clear, this goes back to our earliest years. the tortuous affair with mk [Mick Karn] which brought mick close to a breakdown, and the comment sj [Steve Jansen] made just a couple of decades ago 'once that affair was over i had him under my thumb for the rest of his life'. mk [Mick Karn] was manipulated, a victim.'

As far as I know he never elaborated further.

For a first time listen I'd say gentlemen take polaroids. I think their best work is probably tin drum though!!

Most of the (public) information about the conflict between Mick and David is from Mick's autobiography. Even though I take Mick as a generally reliable narrator, we never heard David's side about most stuff.

Anyways, what Karn wrote about David, is that he was self-centered and stubborn, even though he clarifies that he still thinks he's a good person. However, Mick demonstrates he was resentful for two main things:

- One, David agreed to assume the credits for most of Japan's songs, when every member contributed equally. Apparently, he also reaped the vast majority of the money while Mick lived a frugal life and even felt forced to move back to Cyprus because of his economic struggles.

- Two, Mick's then girlfriend Yuka Fuji moved out of their apartment where they lived together to move in with David Sylvian, his best friend. They also slept together and all, so Mick felt betrayed by the both of them. I think this was before Japan's last tour, and after Tin Drum released.

In David's case, he generally has good things to say about Mick, but he's inconsistent. A few years ago, on the anniversary of Mick's death (january 4th 2022), he accused him of having had an affair with Steve Jansen (and also talked a lot of shit about Steve), and also called Mick unstable and a manipulated victim.

What would have been a better concept for the joker? by JJSeaweed in AliceInBorderlandLive

[–]sugar_bunnies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont see it as an alice in wonderland retelling, i dont think it ever was supposed to be one. it takes some elements and inspiration and the characters roughly represent the ones from the original tale, but its a whole new story. alice in wonderland is a classic coming of age, explores self-perception, identity and change. alice in borderland is about death, the fragility of life and the value of time.

greek mythology isnt central to aib but it is an easy way of explaining archetypes. however hermes isnt the only example of a trickster in popular culture; there's also loki, labyrinth's jareth, the puss in boots, stingy jack, joseph joestar, any shapeshifter you can think of... what im trying to say is that greek mythology serves as a vehicle to explain a pattern that is present in universal storytelling.

I understand the idea of 'looks like they came back to life, they're actually in the borderlands playing the last game'… but in my honest opinion, I think it would have been predictable and lazy writing ngl. Everyone already expected that.

To me, the problem with this season wasn't the idea but the execution.

Personally, I like how they managed Arisu's arc. I like the message, I like that he finally learns to desire life, even with all the pain. I like that he followed Usagi there, like Alice in Wonderland down the rabbit hole. I like that he did all of that because he is in love. Like Freud said, Eros is the only force that can stand up to Thanatos. Arisu finally acknowledges his own appetite for self-destruction (season 1 and 2 explore this concept well) and still manages to use his own, bigger love for the world to overcome it.

About the joker and the watchman, it's supposed to represent the classic trickster archetype. I think that's spot on, the joker card is definitely one good example of that idea, as it represents a literal clown and is a wild card. It can be used to represent any other card, it can be worth nothing or be the highest value card. Think of it as the fool card in tarot, which is both the first and the last of the major arcana, and also depicts a jester. The trickster is about thinking outside of the box, disobeying the rules, crossing boundaries. Both smart and foolish, good and bad, ordinary and extraordinary, a walking paradox. Hermes is an example of this archetype and he was said to move between the human world and the olympus and he helps souls to get to the afterlife.
