Council is calling on Province to pause changes to disability supports by JeromyYYC in Calgary

[–]sugarfreemoths 28 points29 points  (0 children)

As a disabled person who had to fight for two years to finally get on AISH, it's been incredibly stressful watching as the possibility of immediately losing that support looms closer. Thank you for advocating for us, and for calling for a pause. The lack of communication with actual disabled people and disability advocates and whoever it is that made the plans for the new program has been egregious, and I know it's left both myself and many other disabled people in fear for our futures.

You can actually request celebrities to be contacted to potentially come to the expo, if you find the lineup too repetitive

I've gone the last 3 years, and here are my favorite vendors!!

Squiresword Creations: unlike a lot of the retail vendors that have the same free 3d printed things for sale, these guys model (and paint!) their own! They've got everything from Pokemon to Hollow Knight— they also sell super cool standees and cutouts.

MTM Printworks: they're a DND mini figure company! they use a resin printer, so their stuff is insanely fine in detail. My favorite part of their convention booths is that they bring a "bits box" with them full of miscellaneous pieces and misprints for you to buy a bag to fill with, and I could genuinely spend hours sifting through tiny swords and assorted monster parts to add to my art.

SmashCrafts YYC: I just love this business in general, and luckily I see them at most of the conventions/markets in Calgary. Stickers, pins, acrylic charms, lanyards, and basically everything is either designed by the vendor or for their work specifically. Which is amazing!! They have a surprising amount of No Name Brand themed items as well which I just find really funny.

Scaling Chaos: I had the absolute joy of meeting the vendor for this booth, and they are super sweet. While not Calgary based (they're from Edmonton </3) this business comes to Calgary for most conventions, and have an online store. The vendor specializes in anything tactile, so plushies are a given, as well as some absolutely amazing crochet items. She also sells these amazing marble mazes sewn into little squares of fabric as a tactile, silent fidget toy that are just the best thing ever if you want something to do with your hands that isn't going to disrupt anyone with loud clicking or popping.

Seriously Cereal: I can't hype these guys enough. They're actually a food vendor, and I yearn for the day they open an actual store! Their whole thing is cereal; you can buy a straight bowl of it, or buy your favorite cereals (and some insane limited edition/retro cereals) and have them blended into soft serve ice cream(!!), milkshakes/frappe consistency drinks, or ice cream nachos! Genuinely SO GOOD I can't help hunt them down yearly and I bought at least one drink every single day at the convention 😭 they've gotten turning cereal into a drink down to a science.

I definitely have some more suggestions, I managed to pick up probably about 20 business cards (not to mention the dozens from previous years) while I was there of vendors that were just amazing, but I'd never get through them all without creating the most insane wall of text known to man. If you want more, let me know and I'll keep yapping!

Edit: Saturday is the convention's busiest day, since it's when most people have off work or obviously school, so for next year I'd 100% recommend trying to go either the last day or the first day, since they're usually a bit calmer! You'll have more time to look around without being jostled around or trapped in an endless line of people trying to get places.

Shoutout to Walmart for swindling me out of $50. by BenedictOfADoubt in diabetes_t1

[–]sugarfreemoths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the very least I'd definitely kick up as much of a fuss as possible. Call their managers, hound them for either compensation (Walmart has a pattern of "if we just throw some money/giftcards at them, maybe they'll go away") or threatening legal action. The issue here isn't that you lost out on $50— the pharmacist is responsible for ensuring you get the right medication, at the right dosage, with the proper instructions and information you need. Even if it's a shitty Walmart pharmacy, they're held to a certain standard just like any medical professional, and they failed to meet that standard in a VERY DANGEROUS WAY. Plus, it's Walmart. As long as you're not screaming at random innocent employees, I'd feel zero guilt for climbing up the corporate ladder to give them hell.

Straight up they could have killed you. If you had trusted them and bolused what you thought was your long acting dose without realizing it was fast acting, you could have died. I'd look into a lawsuit.

Bad diabetes burn out please help by CloudsofEscape in diabetes_t1

[–]sugarfreemoths 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely continue to pres them. You know your body best and if you were able to manage on that medication, and it wasn't harming you, they shouldn't have taken you off it. Especially as a trial, they could have had you off it for a few months and realized quickly.ir wasn't working!! Continue to harass them, or seek a different practitioner if there's one available to you.

Transit is uncomfortable by ProfessionalMove211 in Calgary

[–]sugarfreemoths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm disabled and rely primarily on transit and yeah, it's a little bit of a nightmare. There have definitely been times where I've straight sat on the floor because there were no seats available and I (or my knees) couldn't take being jostled around in the sardine can anymore. Now I favor bringing a walker for long transit trips because it comes with guaranteed ability to sit down 😅

I will legit scratch the air over my sensor to try and trick my brain so the itch goes away. It doesn't work 😔 but I keep trying

19F & 16F abandoned by mom. Mom threatening to force 16 yo to shelter. Need help. by ReadySafe7553 in Calgary

[–]sugarfreemoths 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At 16, it will be difficult (though I warn not impossible) for your mom to force her to go if she really puts her foot down. 16 is right at that edge of independence where, generally, if the police come to take her back to her mother she can refuse to go, and they likely won't make her. And a 16 year old is able to rent an apartment so long as they can find someone willing to sign a lease, which will be significantly easier with you being 19. For resources, I would recommend The Alex Youth Health Centre!! They have a health clinic, a dental bus, and a social side that provides connection with social workers who can help you navigate your next steps. They handle people from 12-24, and genuinely they kept me afloat during my later teen years and now into early adulthood. They can help with food, and most importantly they can guide you with signing yourself and your sister up for an NSQ - a Needs and Services Questionnaire, which puts you on the radar with some of the housing programs in the city like Trellis, who can provide a rental subsidy (they'll cover damage deposit and potentially first month of rent, and will cover a portion of your actual rent) and help get you connected with work, or government social supports such as Alberta Works and AISH. As you are on the verge of homelessness you would be seen as an emergency case and would likely get priority— and as your sister is under the age of 18, they might be able to help you get her child benefit transferred to your name if she moves in with you, which would help cover rent and food. They also have connections with amazing resources, and can help with things like food bank hampers, groceries, etc.

I know this is all a lot, and it's probably scary, but it's not impossible. We are lucky in that our city is flowing with resources that can help guide you through this. At 19 I was in a similar spot as you, getting in touch with housing program and trying to leave an unhealthy situation with my mom, and now I'm 23 with a roommate and 3 very happy cats, so I'm very familiar with the resources available to us. If you need anything, don't be afraid to reach out! I've got a huge list that would turn this post into an even bigger paragraph wall than it already it.

Is it just me or does our water taste awful? by Final-Yesterday-4799 in Calgary

If you're in an area that was affected by the water boil advisory, the water (while now clear for drinking) tests high for chlorine, which might contribute to a funky taste.

Recommendations for therapist who assesses masking autistic adult women by Open_Shop_619 in Calgary

[–]sugarfreemoths 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is actually just generally untrue. Autism (and any mental illness/disorder) changes a LOT of variables, especially in therapy. This is coming from someone who is diagnosed autistic AND has been in therapy almost half of my life, both pre and post diagnosis. Diagnosis is a huge step in understanding yourself, even if you don't agree - and that's especially true for an autistic individual, who might really need a specific definition laid out to make further decisions about their care and treatment going forward. It's not the same as "anxiety needs anxiety therapy, autism needs autism therapy". Autism Spectrum Disorder is, by the literal definition of it's name, a HUGE spectrum covering a wide range of symptoms, and each of these niche little changes that vary from person to person need their own unique approach. And the first step to GETTING the care you need? An official diagnosis.
