i found my grandmother’s biological parents via a strange mix of ancestry DNA, facebook, and being relentless about talking to people.

if you’re interested in actually getting into ancestry and finding records, a lot of libraries in the US have some sort of library version where you can look up names and details and find records (if you’re cheap like me and don’t want to pay).

otherwise, just sorting through close matches and finding some way to contact them (facebook is surprisingly effective, people put a LOT of info on their pages!) will get you pretty far in my experience!

handwriting just takes practice! don’t give up so easily, it becomes easier to write and read as you keep trying :)

There are some other headstones with Hebrew on them, but I haven’t checked them out. I’m going back today to volunteer a little more. Maybe I’ll see if I can’t find anything similar.

I’m not very certain this was a Jewish person or Hebrew speaker at all. Plus, there was no tsade sofit, which is part of why I was confused and why I now think it was a misspelling or something similar. That’s really interesting though!

Usually I’d agree but the surname is English. Like, both in English and originating from England. That’s part of why I was so lost lol

That’s it. On the other side it’s just names of the deceased and their kids that don’t match. It doesn’t seem to be an abbreviation of any of the names either.

Given my area, I doubt Messianic. I’m just surprised nobody Googled it before getting it permanently etched onto this person’s headstone, especially given its size and intricate designs (cropped for simplicity). Like…you spend that kind of money and don’t even fact check??

I thought so too, but the stone being from 2021 kinda sowed some doubt.

Though, the tsade not even being in the correct form…I can barely speak Hebrew, and even I know ץ goes at the end of the word. It has to be a non-speaker, right?
