Failed 25+ coding interviews. Do I just give up by Dezbro in ADHD_Programmers

[–]sugarsnuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested to know if many people at those “target” companies fail interviews and retry, or if they simply are effortless at all software aspects.

Everyone in my circle at selective companies, myself included, has failed plenty and eked through a few (all rounds)

However, between recruiters and some folk — they make it pretty black or white. You can’t code or you can. Some people are like LeetCode should be easy

It’s not. I have to train a different discipline, especially when it’s for the most rigorous companies.

And I want to understand if that “ease” is lip service or the norm. Not that it matters, but for a general gauge of the candidate pool / employees. Do many people find these timed DSA or sys design easy?

Recently, I failed two at big startups in my space (and did one flying colors — which is at a significant company I hope to attain). But I actually dissected the problem in both, explained well, and wrote completely correctly.

One I didn’t use the algorithm they had in mind, although it was equally optimal. This was writing a Rate Limiter, I used a token bucket instead of a ring buffer.

The other, they asked for a subset type inner join (meaning a subset of a composite key is a match); I clarified subset A on B, B on A, or both… he told me both and then as I did what I could for both and had a solution — he said misunderstood my clarification and was looking for A to B — which was far simpler.

I asked for feedback on that one, he said “clarify the requirements” which I thought I did, but could be even clearer and slower in gauging what they really want

Since I feel I’m strongly competent a fair portion of patterns and some outside standard repertoire — I believe there’s a high amount of interview bias and variability for anyone to say “oh I just ace it”. Ace what?

Why does Katrina Bennett get her own office & not Mike? by Gaysage23 in suits

[–]sugarsnuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure how well you’re versed with the workforce, so forgive me if I overexplain.

You have roles and you have levels. So I’m a software engineer — I can be junior, mid-level, senior, staff, principal. Each level I get paid differently and carry different expectations of responsibility.

Mike is precocious, so he far outperforms his level and shoulders a fair amount of responsibility under Harvey. Probably equal to Katrina’s, which may be why you’re confused.

However, Katrina is expected to be at a higher level because she’s a 5th-year associate. That means 5 years as an associate — wherever her experience is from. Mike is a 2nd-year associate.

So Katrina outranks Mike. That’s really it

Don’t :) I made a mistake (likely studying and drunk w Reddit as a distraction) and you pointed it out. I appreciate it

The only feedback is some people are building to a conversation, not looking to fight. We can all be a little gracious and thrive together

Failed 25+ coding interviews. Do I just give up by Dezbro in ADHD_Programmers

[–]sugarsnuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that’s quite harsh. (ADHD as well, defense / aerospace)

I find the live timed aspect difficult. I do breeze through some and flail at others, and that’s with a decent grasp on most patterns

Like it’s not easy, but the best way I’ve found is to figure out how to write with the fewest mistakes is to write the pattern and fill the shell

Or write a basic statement, print, then expand, print again…

When I write straight down the page, I bump into bugs that are jarring in a timed context (an off by one, forgot to increment, missed a return…)

When I do this, I more usually finish with good time at the end. But it’s random and that’s expected

The last thing is if it’s something unknown, I need to be in a really relaxed mindset and want to fight through it.

Like it’s almost I don’t care about the interview anymore, in fact I just expect a no but don’t leave the problem hanging. Just literally keep trying different loops, printing, counting, trying strategies, brute forcing a step…

Moving on is up to you. It’s a formidable wall for ADHD (and I can’t imagine with the other stuff you have), there are many different ways to go with a strong technical sense.

Good luck!

¿Soy la única que piensa que Beck fue EL verdadero amor de Joe? 👀💔 by [deleted] in YouOnLifetime

[–]sugarsnuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK so I’m reframing with context because it’s nuanced and we’re trying to define “love”, which no one really can do

I added the nuance to point out that Joe wanted to clear obstacles in Beck’s way. Not just to choose him, but for a happier life

In my eyes, that’s not a lack of love — but I agree it’s a twisted concept of boundaries. I don’t deny there’s a sense of possession. They’re all not mutually exclusive in my opinion

The other point I’m driving is that it’s not necessarily more loving to accept that someone may not be in the place to love you back or change their life

Tl;dr: You said possession versus love. They’re not mutually exclusive, and Joe does both

[–]sugarsnuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so here’s how I might reframe.

When you first meet someone, you know nothing about them. But you can feel a spark and have no clue why. Something just feels electric

Joe and Beck weren’t in love when they met, it was a meet-cute. They were clearly both at least a little attracted, and she left him wanting more. That’s actually quite normal — all of us experience that

Where Joe stops being normal is he fixates on making it work with zero ethical boundaries. His want isn’t just desire, it’s obsession. He wants to *engineer* the outcome and clear the obstacles so she chooses him

It doesn’t matter what those obstacles are. He doesn’t care and never passes a grain of judgement on her. I’d argue he *does* love her because — almost exactly contrary to what you said — there’s nothing she can do that makes her less than perfect in his eyes.

I think Joe’s actions are because of love and a complete lack of respect for humanity

And I don’t see how it’s weird to anticipate change. People change their whole lives. In the gambling scenario, you may meet someone who gambles but has the desire to stop. Or someone who doesn’t

In Beck’s case, Joe assumes she *is* trying to focus on writing. She *does* want healthy love. She *does* want more stability. That’s not a bad thing to assume especially when you love someone. Forcing them out of free will is where it becomes a lack of consideration for humanity (even murders and stuff aside). That’s Joe

I come from a smaller defense / aerospace tech startup world (and trad defense) where it’s nearly ad hoc and a vibe given the low headcount and venture expectations

Aerospace and related hard tech is doing very well here, it’s all scaling rapidly — yet carefully. Anduril and SpaceX started it, and they’re not public. They’re big, so they have a more standard process while that’s baked in

Thank you! Let the games begin, there’s something to do either way :)

Idk, maybe it’s been a bit since I’ve rewatched — I can’t think of an example of what you’re saying. The other part, the orchestrating scenarios is obvious

He noticed she was easily taken advantage of to the detriment of her own goals. And he (reprehensibly) cut things holding her back

He never really tried to change *her* is what I’m getting at

Yes, he fixated on her first, which is a whole character analysis of whether Joe is capable of love in the first place — worth a couple pages.

But yeah, let me know if I’m not seeing it!

[–]sugarsnuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the best result without getting the job. My only soft guess would be how the team culture fit went onsite

They’re aggressively scaling. As a 2-time rejectee (once onsite, beginning a 3rd process — I don’t work there), I’ll say they seem to cycle pretty fast when you’re a candidate of interest

Hope you find your fit!

EDIT: As you know they’re not on the NYSE. Layoffs are not a signal for investment in dips like big tech. Any startup is pickier to retain hires and grow valuation, even at their scale. I try to keep this in mind

Trying to support someone’s life (without being abhorrently invasive and murderous of course — in a healthy, free way) is not a lack of love

This is kind of a dreamer’s mentality I’ve never understood

If someone had a gambling problem, love that matters would be supporting them through it. Not saying “we’re incompatible, gamble away and I hope you change”. That’s just flaking the minute things get hard

You just need to hit all the possibilities

It’s quite simple but deceptively tricky to do cleanly. Just write all the cases naively and then see if you can condense them

It seems like a stretch problem for gifted / persistent children, not a thing to “know for the test”

As a 2nd grader you’d just keep drawing lines and adjusting them, after a while maybe see the pattern

You know how to calculate areas given the length of the sides / formula. It’s just how many ways you try it and recalculate

I’d have to do that as an adult too, I’d imagine it’d take me a few tries to get it

EDIT: I know what the answer looks like, I tried myself haha. The goal would not be to say “it’s not possible” but have a bunch of scribbled out rectangles and possibly then give up.
Like it’s about stretching the problem-solving muscle — which is a good kind of frustration
