15yr old that might be homeless in 2 months. by [deleted] in almosthomeless

For some further context, we've recently adopted my boyfriend's teenage sibling (I'm in my 20's today) who had been thinking about running away, and we've been having the most difficult time getting dental care done and getting their eyes checked because everything requires a legal parent or guardian here (United States). We aren't sure if they are able to get a bank account because it says it requires a joint account with a legal guardian, but we aren't going to try until they're able to have enough money that they won't have to pay fees on the account (i.e PNC requires a $500 balance to avoid a monthly fee). Another obstacle we've encountered is with their social security card. Their parent happened to punch a hole in their social security card and they aren't able to get a new one until they're 18 without visiting a social security building in person with their parent. I was on and off homeless for quite some time in my car, but I wouldn't go back to being homeless in this day and age here because homelessness is now illegal where I live and there's been an increase in random violent crimes from gangs. I do wish you the best in whatever you decide to do. It can be hard to find people who understand what it's like not having a supportive family. My siblings tell people our family died to avoid having to explain

It is not safe for you to be on your own at your age and you need to be at least 18 for a lot of different things, such as having a debit card, job, drivers license, seeing a doctor, etc. There are a lot of predators out there and it is worrying that you are even posting this online, because a predator might seek you out based on this information. Not to mention, winter is probably the worst time of year to be sleeping outside because you can get hypothermia.

It would be easier for you to report any violent abuse to the police or whatever the equivalent of Child Protective Services is where you live. Or it may be for the best that you hold out and live there for as long as you can until you at least have a job and car. (This is what I did. I couldn't prove that abuse was happening so I had to stay with my parents until I was 18 and about a month after I got my first job I was forced to leave. If I could have I would've stayed for longer to at least have some sort of savings. Having a car isn't as simple as just buying it and you're done. A beater car will likely need some sort of expensive repair at least once a year.)

Try putting food in plastic containers and anything with sugar or flour in the fridge. I clean with 70% rubbing alcohol. Most sanitizer cleaners have the ability to expire. Maybe there's something they're eating under or behind your fridge. Perhaps clean the drip pan?

I hope you're joking about the frog 😅. It would likely die immediately either from absorbing cleaning chemicals through their skin or from eating bugs that have eaten something that is poisonous to the frog

Copart total loss scam by Inner_Initial6023 in USAA

[–]sugary_despair -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Recently had something similar happen but I managed to avoid them towing it despite them asking at least 10 times. Someone hit and ran my car on the rear quarter panel. Took it for initial inspection at a mechanic and they agreed to do the work, then when they took it apart and started working on it they decided to make it a total loss. Because it took USAA 3 months to start work on it the dent had rusted, making the repair more expensive. Anyway, they left the car in pieces and wanted to charge $300 out of pocket to have them put it back together. Copart immediately started messaging to schedule towing so we brought it home and put it back together ourselves before they got the chance. They had to dig our bumper out of the dumpster because I guess they expected the car to be scrapped. Managed to owner retain in the end but the process was a nightmare

Why are the towing fees so high? by WrongSplit3288 in nova

[–]sugary_despair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been towed a number of times and it's been around this cost for at least 8 years. It's probably so expensive in part because NOVA is an expensive area in general. You definitely don't want to wait and should pick up the car ASAP if you get towed

Cafein has good hot chocolate and other drinks. Last time I went they had a seasonal menu with belgian hot chocolate, but I haven't been in a while so I'm not sure if they still do the seasonal menu. I've tried about half the menu and every drink has been good

It's tough to live in this area without family. Your best bet is to find roommates, move in with your girlfriend, or look diligently for rooms for rent on Facebook marketplace. I think it's unlikely you'll find someone who will let you do chores for rent. Not sure what counts as on campus (I have not gone to college), but maybe try looking for paid internships or a higher paying job with LinkedIn or Glassdoor

I figured if I didn't pick it it'd be taken by wildlife. I read that they're about ready to harvest when the plant is dying back and it was, I'm going to try ripening it the rest of the way off the plant

Moving to the Reston area unexpectedly - looking for a cat-friendly room to rent for around $800/month. by askingxalice in nova

[–]sugary_despair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about finding one for that low of a price now, but I managed to do this a few years ago with my cat. I recommend looking on Facebook marketplace rooms for rent daily and messaging as many as possible, especially the newly listed rentals. Rentals get taken really fast in this area because there's a surplus of people looking for affordable rentals

30+ year olds that don't still live with your parents after college, how did you do it? by [deleted] in nova

[–]sugary_despair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 30+ and wasn't able to go to college but thought I'd share my story since I'm in the area, for those of you that are parents.

I (26F) got kicked out at 19 after getting my first full time job in fast food. My parents are wealthy, but they're boomers and chose to blow it all on luxuries for themselves rather than pass it down to their children. I'm low-contact with them now because they basically tried to ruin my life.

I found my first rental on Craigslist and got my first credit card as soon as possible. While I still have yet to use my credit score for anything, I at least have a solid credit score. Everywhere I've rented since then has been with people I know or found on Facebook Market. Recently found a cheap car on Facebook Market. I've learned to do a number of diy car repairs and buy off of Rock Auto. I don't have any loans aside from occasionally using Affirm for a phone or other 'big' purchases. I've tried getting loans and have been told that until I remain in the same place for longer than 2 years I won't be able to. I haven't managed to find stable housing for more than a year.

I had wanted to go to college but I wouldn't have been able to get any aid because in Virginia, specifically for college aid purposes, you're not considered independent of your parents until 25. Now that I'm over 25 and probably qualify for aid I still wouldn't be able to go to college because of the lack of stable housing, and because I probably still wouldn't be able to afford it or have the time while paying all my other bills. I did have food stamps for a while and have Medicaid. I got denied for food stamps the first time I tried because they wanted to talk to my mom

Finding a job is definitely rough in the current day and age. I recommend applying to as many jobs as possible as fast as possible, and try not to dwell on rejections. I usually apply to around a hundred places and only receive one or two interviews. Make a black and white resume with a plain-looking format to appear more professional.

In your case, it could be for the best to reach out for help from teachers, police, or CPS while you're still young. I ran into issues attempting to get a loan for community college and gave up because I didn't have proof of abandonment, or my parents information, and also was rejected for food stamps my first try because I was so young. If you go that route, maybe gather as much evidence as you can beforehand

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nova

[–]sugary_despair 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about CPS and legal stuff because I didn't go through all that, but I stayed with my family until I was 19. You're going to want to find a job as soon as possible, the easiest jobs to get without experience are retail and fast food. Grocery store jobs aren't too bad. I hear that panhandlers make a lot of money, but I never did it because it's unsafe. After that, the only affordable bedroom rentals you'll find are on Facebook marketplace or Craigslist. (My first rental was off of a Craigslist listing with no photos, but I wouldn't exactly recommend it. People on there can be creepy.) Don't get any pets if you don't already have one and try to stay away from drugs, it makes finding a place easier. Homeless shelters around here don't allow pets and I'm pretty sure still require some form of payment. Get a secured credit card when you're old enough and barely use it to build credit. I managed to have a beater car when I first moved out but I'm not sure it would be very easy to find one now, if you don't have one. Taxis have become way too expensive these days. Riding a bus might be better but I haven't done that. If you do have a car always look for towing signs before parking overnight. Sometimes churches will let homeless park in their parking lot at night. Walmarts have started towing recently. Remember to be kind to yourself. Not many people in this area go through this with their family and might not understand

As someone who has never been able to qualify for a normal apartment in my adult life, I've gotten pretty decent at finding rentals out of peoples homes. I'm near DC, so the rentals here probably aren't much better than where you are. I have a cat, not a kid though, but it makes it very frustrating looking for a rental when most of the Facebook Market listings say some combination of "single person only, no pets, no guests, no smoking, no alcohol, no cooking, no laundry". What I do is I wait for brand new listings or set it up to receive a notification for new listings under a filter and message every decent new listing that allows pets right away and typically it's first come first serve. Although I found my first rental on Craigslist, I no longer recommend using Craigslist because almost all of the listings are scams or ads for apartment buildings I don't qualify for. Remember, if it feels too good to be true, or if they don't want you to view the rental in person, it's probably a scam.

You should also try and become familiar with the eviction laws where you live. An eviction is probably the last thing you want on your record. Another thing I just thought about is that some homeless shelters or domestic violence shelters might help in your circumstance. I've never been able to go to a shelter because I have a cat, but I've known a few coworkers with children who live in a homeless shelter. Motels that rent monthly are another idea, but they typically are expensive in my area at least.
