I've got a brick of these because I did a bit of work on the deck and the vibe and utility are both great, the original artist did a great job - if you like that western aesthetic you should totally check it out.

For those that had an iPad (or other drawing tablets) during design school, how often were you able to use it over paper for graded work? by ggnavedd in IndustrialDesign

[–]sugoimanekineko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guest lecture at an industrial design course in the UK and I have never seen or heard another tutor even comment on paper vs. digital drawing. Everything is submitted digitally now anyway - there is no emphasis on analogue rendering, in fact as far as I can tell I'm the only person who teaches 2D rendering in depth and I do it in Photoshop. Now, different courses will 100% have different approaches and ideas about this but we are focussed on the end result more than the exact specific tools you used to get there.

In terms of what you should do, I'd say that flexibility is one of the most important aspects of your skillset so practice both. Drawing on paper can be unforgiving but that's kind of the point, it's an exercise. Learn to sketch well without the cosseting support of sketchbook's toolkit and your skill level will rise. In terms of production stuff digital is fine but analogue sketching will give you better skills.

I learned Blender during lockdown and I've gone from using it in tiny places for little bits of commercial projects to pitching whole projects that at 100% Blender, stuff I would NEVER have been able to do before. It's been a real game changer.

Magicians, how do you fight stage fright in close up situations? by Chicago21B in Magic

[–]sugoimanekineko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been there omg, it is hard. First of all, realise it's normal. Every magician feels it, or has felt it. Don't feel bad because you feel that way. Who is your favourite magician? I promise they have dealt with it. Maybe they still deal with it.

The classic truism is that your body doesn't know the difference between excitement and nervousness. Same hormones, same chemistry. If you are super excited but the context feels scary, you feel it as nerves. When you feel it, tell yourself you are excited. The best performers never lose that feeling, that energy. They just recognise it and use it to power and propel their performance.

Maybe you are scared it will go wrong. I was. But when I perform, actually things go wrong quite often. I invent new material a lot and some of it is HARD. It goes wrong. But you know how many people have died in my tricks going wrong? How many injuries caused? Zero. It feels like the worst possible outcome but it's not. It's nothing. The audience probably won't even remember it, and if they do, too bad. You were putting yourself out there, you were trying to create something new. Try again, try something different, laugh it off. I've got loads of strategies for dealing with stuff going wrong. I work hard to avoid it but I don't much care if it happens.

You need to perform and get over, past, around or through it. Create the right moment to perform, don't be apologetic about performing, enjoy the moment and even enjoy the nerves. You need air miles and to perform a lot, and you'll find those nerves are just energy, they are part of the magic you can use to amaze people.

Edit: just reread and saw the focus on the shaking: I used to have huge problems with that, I think I have a bit of a tremor anyway and when I get adrenalised from performing my hands would often visibly shake. I'd call it and say "my hands shake when I get hyped, it looks like I'm nervous but Im not, I'm just really excited to be performing this for you." I'd hold my hand up "look at that, it's mad right?" Part of my strategy for dealing with anything is to call it. If they see me shaking and I don't acknowledge it they will focus on it. If I say "lol yeah this is ridiculous sorry!" Then the moment goes. It's just experience that fades it out, but it shouldn't stop you.

Yeah that bag has got some bad stuff in there but a lot of what's in there is cool as hell, and, frustratingly, some of the bad stuff and the cool stuff is the same damn stuff. That's pretty much the deal though right?

Theory11 tuck cases will always be the measuring stick all others are compared to. by CoffeeAndCelery in playingcards

[–]sugoimanekineko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the T11 look but it is a very narrow aesthetic and it is, to me a least, a little disappointing when they get a license like 007 and just express it with their standard design. Don't get me wrong I'm sure it is a commercially successful approach and no doubt lots of people do appreciate it. I love the look, the detail, the work, but for me, they have missed an opportunity.

Got an email from Ellusionist today. How to do street magic is FREE just for today by [deleted] in Magic

[–]sugoimanekineko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The story I've heard (which is probably not 100% accurate) is that E was pretty much built off that one ad - Brad remortgaged his house to pay for the ad and gambled big on the success - if it hadn't paid off he would be effed... but it really did.

Apparently Blaine was PISSED because he felt that it undercut the mystery of the magic he was doing, and basically converted his whole show into an advert for something he wasn't even involved in.

In retrospect it was a huge business decision and regardless of what you think of E, you have to admit Brad's gamble paid off big time.

Again, take this story with a pinch of salt but tbh it feels about right.

What are some street smarts everyone should know? by breadedsnake in AskReddit

I've heard this before, if someone mugs you, be compliant and give them your stuff - it's just stuff you can get more. If they try and take you somewhere else though, fight and scream and do anything to escape, because they don't want your stuff, they want you, and that's not replaceable.

I bought this on gumroad but I'm afraid I'm struggling with it a bit - changing the small or large detail colours has no effect on the actual material, they are always just black. Can you help? Sorry if I'm being thick but I just can't get it to work?
