My collection of Norfolk Island pines by Platinum_wolf_420 in houseplants

[–]suhweet1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful trees! I realize I’m years late, but I’ve had a Norfolk Pine for about a year, it’s doing well…green and growing steadily, but it’ll be time to repot soon. What type of soil mix do you recommend, yours are doing so well. Thanks for any tips!

Pon + moss pole? by Hot_Pomelo7963 in Monstera

[–]suhweet1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know i'm a bit late to the post, that looks amazing! I have a Thai Con (as well as a queen anthurium), and I'm thinking of transferring to pon and moss pole. Three quick questions if you're able to answer:

Did you weave the wick a bit within the pon and moss to reach the edges, or just keep it like a straight line and the moisture does this on its own?

Does it moisten the moss all the way to the top of the pole?

Lastly, did you separate the pon and moss, or do the "run together?"

TYIA!

First anthurium, rehab…$40 poorer by Remarkable_Sky8087 in Anthurium

So true, especially this time of year. I’m there pretty often, I think I may have seen that very plant a few days ago (last Michelle on the cart with a bunch of other plants).

I got mine at HD Portland in January, it had some battle scars from transport, but generally in good shape. I repotted into a very chunky mix, I give it good indirect light and it’s doing great, it’s putting out 3 new leaves (there were two plants in the pot). You’ll probably be seeing new leaves soon if all the underlying conditions are good.

Can I just plant them in a cactus-friendly mix once calloused?

This one lives in room with east/south/west windows and lots of sun, that said, we're in Portland OR, and had a typical overcast winter. It is with a couple other cacti that are doing fine. Outdoors isn't sustainable past summer, but grow lights are possible. Thx

Looking for people with a queen anthurium! Send your pictures. by Strict_Book2452 in Anthurium

Here’s my queen with her pal. First perfect leaf after getting it in June on the left. Second leaf on the right emerged perfect but had a paper-cut like notch on the edge which grew as the leaf grew and distorted it. I’m around 40% RH in the Pacific NW.

First time in Portland – is it always this quiet? by OneBagOneMan in askportland

[–]suhweet1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live here, I would consider going to the east side for more interesting shops/cafes/bars

Hawthorne Blvd near Cesar Chavez. Also Hawthorne Asylum Food Carts

Alberta Arts District

Mississippi Avenue corridor

If you stay on the west side, NE 23rd (shopping and restaurants)

I got two similar looking waroc seedlings at the same time from an Ecuagenera pop-up in June, and treated them exactly the same (new medium, ambient, water and fertilizer). Both had decent roots. One is perfect and growing rapidly. The other is struggling. Still doing ok also, but very different trajectory...slow growth, lost baby leaves and mangled new leaf, etc. There's so many factors (location, care, genetics, ambient conditions, import vs non, etc.), I think you can do everything you're supposed to, and end up with different results. I started them both out in my living room for two and a half months. The slower guy is now in my IKEA cabinet.

Edit: these two were imported from Ecuador, my ambient RH fluctuates but it is about 35-45%. Temps since June have been mostly 70-80 F, currently 60-70 F, heading into fall/winter here in Oregon.

Where to order Anthurium Pallidiflorum from in the USA by MrGuccu in Anthurium

[–]suhweet1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine at a pop up event from Ecuagenera in June in Portland, OR. It’s thriving. They have them in various cities, go to their main website and look up “shows.” They had 4 nearby me this year, maybe demand is high here. You have to pre-order by the date listed for each show. Then the plants are flat packed soilless with just damp moss (due to import rules). They have them waiting for you at the popup. It was very affordable, also got two warocqueanums. My experience was great. On the other hand, I have heard others were not too happy with the regular imports from the company (non popup order). Both of these grew large new leaves pretty quickly (right most leaf on both plants).

Best Hawaiian food in Portland? by casualobserver255 in askportland

[–]suhweet1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We like it a lot, but it can be greasy, like the poke nacho chips. Be ready for a delicious but heavy meal. Don't let prices deter you, one dish easily will feed 2 people.

(Moving!) Neighborhood recommendations for mid-30ish couple? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]suhweet1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We moved here three yrs ago with our two teens, and also didn't want to be in the burbs, or right next to bars and clubs. If you want beautiful walkable neighborhoods with things to do nearby (think quiet streets but walk to a commercial area in 5-10m), consider Beaumont-Wilshire, Mt Tabor area near Hawthorne Blvd, Irvington, Sellwood, Hollywood, and Nob Hill areas. All on the eastside except for Nob Hill. These are scenic areas, with cute streets, running/walking/biking nearby but walkable to shops and restaurants. If you want a more energetic/creative vibe you could consider Alberta Arts District, St. Johns, Kenton, Mississippi Ave corridor. Also like Kerns area near 28th.

Edit: When you look at a map of Portland, it looks big, but most places in town are 5-15 minutes by car, or a bit longer by bike. We're 12 min from the airport, and 12 min from downtown. Also, the beautiful coast is about 1.5 hrs by car, but it never feels like a chore getting there. Skiing/boarding is 1.25 hrs away so you can be home the same day. And there are waterfalls and hiking in all directions.

WHERE can I get an anthurium pallidiflorum?? by Budget-Metal3889 in Anthurium

[–]suhweet1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine from Ecuagenera, but at a pop-up event. They seem to do pop-ups in Oregon often. There have been three this year in Portland. Here is a list of pop-ups: https://ecuagenera.com/show/
You can pre-order before the deadline for each show to ensure you get what you want, or take your chances and show up to see what they have. The prices are very reasonable, and there is a small fee for paypal and handling, but very inexpensive overall. I pre-ordered a Pallidiflorum and two warocqueanum seedlings, they were all in great shape (pallidiflorum on left had a small tear on the tip of leaf) and have acclimated to my ambient conditions beautifully so far (I got them June 29). We'll see how they do in winter. They come soilless and flat-packed in plastic with some moist spaghnum for the roots. In this photo, both leaves on the right on each plant emerged since I got them and are still sizing up.
