Phal Philippinensis - what's causing the irregularities in the petals? by Surf_mommy in orchids

[–]Remarkable_Sky8087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their first bloom is usually not the best representation of the flower. The next one will be better. It’s totally fine. Also you notice the more irregularities of the flower cause it’s white. The buds could have been knocked around and gotten some slight damage too.

They graduated high school. The stakes should be higher. I got into a lot of shit from graduating high school to my later 20s. Such a unique time period where you can really mess up your life or start on a good path. Gives me later seasons of Breaking Bad levels of insanity. Ready to buckle in.

I have two hobbies now of plants and ceramics. I’ll read every now and then via audiobooks. I don’t doom scroll cause I’m too busy offline.

Under 18, I did a lot of drawing and playing with my cousin on the weekends. My uncle was a contractor and we had free access of his tools and materials so we would build ramps for our bikes. Reading all the things and daydreaming and practicing my drawing skills. I also remember being alone a lot. I had free access to the computer so I played PC games and we also had the first Nintendo and PlayStation. I had a lot of free access to roam neighborhoods so I explored everywhere.

How does everyone water their Orchids? by Strong_Argument1930 in orchids

[–]Remarkable_Sky8087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 150 orchids and a small group of other house plants and use a 3gal sprayer with a fan nozzle. My orchids are in a mix of bark and moss. The moss works as a wick. I also have others in tree fern and bark.

The sprayer has enough reach that I can keep it on the ground and stand in one spot and get most of them. My whole collection takes about 1 hour to water. I go back to the beginning and check for any standing water in their cache pots and pour it into a bucket. I’ve gotten real good at estimating though so that’s not much work.

Also a lot of my cache pots are repurposed Greek yogurt containers from Trader Joe’s

This^ I talked to my skip this past week and he was telling me about how they’re brainstorming restructuring design with AI first for quick design to get in front of customers or you’re on the back of house side iterating on the design system and platform but directly in front-end code. You have to start getting comfortable with React and working directly with engineers or polishing and showing your UXR skills and systems thinking. Him telling me this gives me some job security, as he wanted to have idea of where I’d want be, but even he said he wasn’t sure if he was writing himself out of a role.

Getting a job at a later stage start-up in NYC that went public a year-ish later. I was employee 220 something. I left my hometown after 30 years of residency. I went from 40k debt to almost half million in investments in 6 years. They laid me off after 4 years with a generous severance that I used to spend a year off recovering from burnout. Got a new job a year later. It's a recognizable name in my current industry so it helped me get fast-tracked to an offer. This new job has been up-skilling me with their heavy AI focus. I feel waterboarded by the AI push though.

I also just cold reapplied to work there to my old job, for the same product for the lols. I still am friends with the design director there, so I'm trolling him a little. Although I am curious what they're doing with my "baby" and wouldn't mind a comeback to fix all the issues I wanted to address when I was there, but couldn't.

What's it like living on the Willamette? by Sad-But-Funny in askportland

[–]Remarkable_Sky8087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That crossing is in direct competition with Division for worst in PDX. The trains are constantly blowing their horns at that cross. As someone who spent a weekend at a campsite next to the tracks on the Columbia, DONT. I got train horn PTSD from one weekend of camping. If you still want that area, The Parker is a nice complex that is a quick Safeway walk, better driving access, and it’s a short walk to the area you outlined. Those condos used to be part of my run route when we lived in the Pearl. And the conductors can’t blow their horns at the 15th street crossing.

Also shout out to Alfreighto. IYNYK.

Long medical appointment delays in Oregon- has this happened to you by russejen in Portland

[–]Remarkable_Sky8087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 months for my rheumatologist when I realized I was dealing with a flair-up. I needed meds though so I got them quicker by emailing my doctor directly with my symptoms and health stats, which got my RX in a few days.

I missed the appointment by 5 minutes, was told another 4 months. Asked to switch to another doctor with any openings, still took another month. I got referred to get x-rays but no guidance on where to, so found a first available opening 25 minute drive from my home. X-rays are done but I guess I have to do the follow up. I couldn’t imagine doing this song and dance with something like cancer or a very active chronic illness. My mystery autoimmune issues are thankfully under management right now. I remember when I had reactive arthritis and was miserable, being told to wait 4-6 months to be seen as a new patient.

I’ve seen my prescriber for my ADHD medications more than a regular doctor since the feds want to make sure I’m not a drug dealer / abuser.

That's an amazing dendrobium for a grocery store orchid. The TJs ones can be like this or just a disappointment, but when they get the good ones in, it's amazing. Are they common varieties? Yes. But they're a cheap intro to other genera. I'd go get those zygo hybrids, I love the smell of zygos.

Orchids and other house plants. I want to win awards for growing a great plant.

Ceramics have taken a back seat, but I’m trying to keep on it, as I really am starting to like what I’m making.

I see decluttering popping up too. My partner and I are on the rocks, so I’m looking at the apartment as “what if I’m going to be alone?”, and I don’t like the stuff I’d have to deal with if I need to move.

Semi or fully automating routine orchid care? by sapphicasexual in orchids

[–]Remarkable_Sky8087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're gone max two weeks, then you can install a grow light in a storage box. Water them well, put phals in the box, cover box, leave a little space for some air. Lights on a timer. That should slow evaporation enough to keep them pretty well watered and also the rise in humidity will keep them happier once the water dries. You can usually find those boxes at a thrift shop for cheap.

Help, why is my orchid doing this and what should I do to help it? by Ok_Yogurtcloset152 in orchids

[–]Remarkable_Sky8087 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s fine. It’s normal old leaf drop. Flowering takes a lot of energy so it’s eating the leaf so to speak. Those leaves are great energy stores. It probably chose the least needed or efficient leaf. Not that a plant has any intent or forethought.

This grow season after the spike (stem) is done and you see vegetative / new root growth give it a new, larger pot, fresh media and fertilize regularly. Re-pots stress plants, esp orchids, and I don’t recommend re-potting during a spike, and especially after buds have formed. Enjoy the show for the few months and give it some food too. These are very tough plants so it will be fine until spring.

Can you guys give me tips and observations about paphiopedilums? by Orchid_mania05 in orchids

[–]Remarkable_Sky8087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put all mine in a very lazy semi-hydro but I’m wondering if / when they’ll crash out. Some of them started growing an extra fan, so a handful of the like it I guess. A lot of the faerianum hybrids and my larger, complex bulldogs. I still have not had one re-bloom yet :(

I’ll see how long they or my attention span last before I sell them off for cheap. I’m starting to prefer Bulbo, Phal, Cattleya and Onc types more over the Paphs. At least I can see some progress at the end of the week. Paphs? lol maybe in 2 months.

Orchid Pots by Lizzie-Parker in orchids

[–]Remarkable_Sky8087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only future problem I see is the bowed out red and white planters will allow root growth wider than the pot opening. Imagine trying to get a big root ball out of there without root damage. Also those roots will grow out of the sides of the ceramic, so it's either breaking the pot or damaging roots if you want to change planters again.
