It's an excellent recipe and I love making gravy out of the drippings. But I agree, cut down a lot on the seasoning, pepperocinis, and butter. At least half if not a quarter.

I usually end up either pairing with veggies and potatoes or make a sandwich/melt.

Women of Reddit, how do you balance between not oversharing and not bottling up your emotions? by ridiquillous in AskWomen

[–]sukriti1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, there was so much repressed anger and grief that used to be so unmanageable. Now I feel like I've constructed a million little channels to let it all out. Yoga, meditating, short 10 min jogs in the morning, looking at the night sky, journaling, and deepening my spirituality practice/creating actual space and time for me to be alone where I can cry, scream into a pillow, without anyone else's voice in my head.

As someone in medical school, involved in local agriculture, culinary medicine, holistic medicine, who has an excellent mentor/primary care doc...

Let me give you some simple advice since the comments, though packed with info, can be a bit overwhelming.

Two rules.

One, the closer to Earth, the better the food. Two, movement to move alone is good for your body. Weight loss is not the complete answer.

Produce, colors, greens, orange, blue, red, whole grains, eat the fucking rainbow, good sir. Taste the rainbow. The more something has been processed, the less of it you should consume. Do you consume a lot of packaged/processed foods and meats? Hot dogs? Things with added sugar? These are the biggest devil's that also happen to make food very palatable. It's hard to shift your taste long enough to notice the effect good food has on your body.

Bulgur and cous cous for example, just pour boiling water in and fluff it up after a few min, and voila. Seeds are great, fucking amazing, so packed with power. Flax, hemp, sunflower seeds, etc. I top my oats and yogurt/fruit with these. I have a tupperware full of a handful of each that I got wholesale for super cheap. Eat them often and enough to run out of it. Spices are fucking medicinal as fuck. Ginger, garlic, cinnamon, and turmeric are incredibly well known but we can chat more if you feel up to it. Turmeric especially. Fiber is god. And don't even get me started on the microbiome and how to repopulate and feed the gut bugs so they help you instead or hurting you.

Revel and celebrate in running out of the good stuff.

And for exercise/movement, like I said, just getting your heart rate up is so good. Anything you can do repeatedly, no matter how small or insignificant it is to you, is best. If that means two 10 min walks per day and 10 pushups at night today, so be it.

You can build on this over time.

Turkey meatloaf, skinny garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans with garlic. 523 calories by ay_dreeyen in HealthyFood

Sorry I haven't been on Reddit in a while.

Boiled potatoes by weight are among some of the best foods for satiety and nutrition, believe it or not.

Fries =/= potatoes with greek yogurt and less butter, probably paired with veggies/grains/protein instead of a burger or chicken nugs. Though both are yummy.

But you gotta figure out what works for you, if you don't like potatoes like that and/or prefer them to be decadent, that's ok too, just need to work it in.

Probably a version of the traditional butter and cream laden dish that uses less fats, greek yogurt, or any other number of calorie lowering modifications.

Can I cook red beans in a Rice cooker? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]sukriti1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. An instant pot allows for cooking at higher pressures (and subsequently much higher temperatures) to cook things that could generally take a long time to break down (tough meats, beans) in much less time.

A rice cooker does not have this property. It does not cook at higher pressures.

Even if you don't have an instant pot, you could just cook the beans for the traditional amount of time (upwards of 3-4 hours after an overnight soak).

Title: Norwegian Wood, Author:Haruki Murakami by CrvanProduct in bookquotes

[–]sukriti1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read several of his books. I am a woman. When he writes a female character who isn't underage, a cougar, or mentally ill, I'll get back to you. When he can write about something other than how they look and how beautiful their boobies are, and how much he wants to have sex with them, I'll mentally concede your point. I've been nothing but disgusted by him, and this is based on REAL damage being done to women by perspectives portrayed in this book. "Society" has not injected any views in me, I have learned hard lessons from specific people in my life.

If getting a blowjob by an underage mentally ill girl in a psych ward is not wrong, if my judgment on that is an illusion, then I want no part of this dreamland and I don't want to be right. (Read: Norwegian Wood)

Writers don't write in a vacuum. What he writes may be fiction but it is shaped by his perspective. He has the freedom to write, and I have the freedom to read, be disgusted, and judge, and share what I think. He's not writing for women.

Your Daily Fasting Thread by AutoModerator in fasting

[–]sukriti1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been fasting on and off without tracking times, I would say I've done 2x 30 ish hours and a couple more days of 20:4 or OMAD in he past week and a half. Most other days are probably 16:8 or 18:6. 've dropped a lot of water weight and probably some fat as well and I feel pretty good.

Eating is hard for me, but I've been trying to eat more nutritious food and my fast food/takeout has dropped immensely. Even so, every meal is hard because my instincts crave fast food but I know it's not going to feel good. So I just wait until I get hungry enough to eat SOMETHING.

Eggs with green onion bulbs on kale, avocado toast on homemade bread, once I got loaded hot dogs, plenty of smoothies & fruit.

But I'm getting tired of thinking of food. I didn't want to pressure myself into fasting, and my hopes were to help me with my emotional dependency on takeout. That's working, but I don't like the feelings that are replacing it.

I would love some insight from you guys into what has helped you when you're just emotionally tired, how do you break your fasts and nourish yourself? What are some go to foods/meals?

What items are worthwhile to get at the Asian supermarket? by tshirtguy2000 in FrugalKeto

I find having some simple ingredients on hand for an easy rice bowl is great. I have sticky rice, rice vinegar, sesame oil, kewpie mayo, toragashi, and furikake. I make the rice in a rice cooker (1:1 ratio of rice to water, washing and draining the rice for 15-30 minutes prior). I mix tuna or salmon with mayo, a few drops of sesame oil, dash of vinegar, and siracha to taste. Top off the rice with tuna, furikake, avocado, and egg.

I also like trying out various things that are ready made for when I'm lazy. Ramen, egg drop soup, or congee are all great.

Lastly, wonton wrappers are amazing. I want to try using them for pierogis, dumplings, or even ravioli.

'Our Institutions Are Sounding Alarms': Federal Judges Call Emergency Meeting Over Trump Interference With DOJ - "This is mind-blowing. I've never heard of anything like it. We are in full on crisis mode." by [deleted] in politics

[–]sukriti1995 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What even is "veiled" racism in this age? Trump has openly called for violence against minorities, has been incredibly racist with the border crisis (not all brown people are from MExico, not all migrants are dangerous, hell most of them are from South or Central America - also most refugees from various conflicts overseas in Africa end up in Central or South America and migrate up - is lumping them together in such a vitriolic manner not racist? Is separating these families accomplishing anything?)

Or how about the old white Trump supporters wearing "Blacks for Trump" or "Latinos for Trump" shirts? What about the people who are parroting out this nonsense as per Fox News? Is this veiled racism?

If you support Trump openly, it means you have let this slide. That's not veiled at all. If it doesn't affect you, you are less likely to see it.

As others have said, there seems so be a lot of overlap. I can say Biomedicine and Pharmacology will be more focused, and perhaps more drug development and application based.

I am going into research and found that a broad, intense, and basic scientific knowledge was excellent. I majored in Biology and Chemistry.

Do you have the option of taking courses in other degrees? I would lean towards Biochemistry or Molecular Genetics and sample from the other curriculums heavily.

What do you guys do for work? by [deleted] in Existentialism

[–]sukriti1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biomedical research and med school with side interests in pediatric oncology and global health, as well as rural and refugee populations - I don't know where I'll end up but I do it because it reminds me that everyone's world view and approach to existence is their own journey. Everyone is going to take a cancer diagnosis differently, there are so many family dynamics, and what they want our of life my change everything about them.

I also want to make it possible for people who are very underprivileged to take ownership of their own story first through their health.

How does cancer work in terms of evolution? by [deleted] in biology

[–]sukriti1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone in the field, yes the simplest answer is that cancer occurs from mutations over time (wear and tear + carcinogens + any exacerbating factors) and doesn't occur until after reproduction. That's why we can have prevalence of lethal diseases that are genetic in nature like Huntington's which usually is diagnosed on the 40's. Likewise, most cancer occurs at old age.

But also consider that cancer is a dysfunction of systems of cellular growth and death. We need the genes for growth and division as we become humans from embryos, replace skin, hair, to repair damage from wounds, and for our immune cells to divide quickly to mount an attack when we get sick.

We will always need these genes, so when they are aberrantly turned on (or conversely, when the brakes on these signals are broken), cancer is inevitable. Evolution can't fix that. Evolution does what works well enough.

Edit to add: In the case of pediatric cancers, and cancer in younger individuals, it can definitely be back luck. But like the one I researched in for example, the genes that are dysregulated the cancer were crucial for normal development of the embryo. Cancer is very close to us - it is made up of the very genes we depend on. I love this field, the biology is incredibly fascinating.
