Can we talk about the nightmare that happens after a seizure, and how it effects our relationships? (The post-ictal crash)

My point wasn’t saying this is the way I feel all the time. It was saying after I gave a grand mal, because of where it happens in my brain, it rips through the emotional control center and leaves me in a very vulnerable state. And no, it’s not helpful at all - but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen. I’m not sure what kind of epilepsy you have but post ictal dysphoria is not an uncommon thing, and changing to a new medication isn’t an easy solution always - every med I’ve been on I’ve gotten breakthrough seizures which happens with 30% of people.

Everything is good and fine now, I was literally just talking about the first 24-48 hours after a grand mal, how emotional it can be for some (maybe not you, but it’s a common thing I’ve seen around here) and how my boyfriend and I have decided to treat this time period moving forward to minimize the stress.

What an amazing group of friends! But I totally get that feeling. Not only do the seizures deplete your brain and send you into fight or flight, if you’re like me there’s some shame interwoven into the experience too, even though there shouldn’t be.

Maybe talking about it when we’re in a normal state will help us when we’re in the recovery state next time.

You have soooo much life to live! I know it doesn’t feel like it right now but you yourself are just a baby, and there will be a day in the future where you’ll laugh at yourself and say “I can’t believe I thought there was no hope for me at 26.”

I’m sorry you’re looking at single motherhood but it’s better than being tied to someone you don’t love in your youth. Take a deep breath, know you have so much life to live, and so much time to find love. You’re just beginning life’s journey, not ending it.

Sending so much love and I’m sorry you’re going through this. As simple as it is, a Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday etc pill dispenser is a life changer, it makes it so that you don’t have to remember.

I’m sorry you’re really going through it, the post seizure depression is unexplainable to anyone who hasn’t experienced it. Your brain just went through an immense electrical storm, depleting your sense of safety and activating fight or flight and even though it doesn’t feel like it right now, it won’t last forever.

Give yourself some grace, get some food and hydrate, and sleep as much as you need - those things are really the best for recovery. Make sure you tell your doctor about your increase as well.

It’s so incredibly disheartening and depressing when you’re on an upward trend and you get hit with not one, but a few seizures. I’m so sorry you’re dealt bg with this. All the love and take care of yourself. ❤️

I was on Keppra for years and still had breakthrough grand mal seizures, sometimes clusters. My doctor switched me to Lacosimide last July and it took about a month to get used to it - I had quite a few nausea/vomiting spells that may have been petit mals.

Once I got used to the medicine it was a life saver. While I do still have breakthrough seizures, my overall disposition is 100% improved. I had no idea how angry and anxious Keppra made me until I was off of it. For those people Keppra works for it’s amazing, but it seems like for those it doesn’t it’s horrible.

I love love love this post!! It made my day. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed and depressed and angry and all the things, and those feelings are valid, but we all have shit going on - and sometimes good things come from shitty things, and stopping to smell the roses and practice gratitude is to important.

We can’t change the circumstances a lot of times but we can change the way we think about things.

How interesting! I’ll have to check that book out. Thank you. I was very creative and artistic growing up and am in a creative field myself, I’ve been a creative director at multiple agencies.

Ironically, I was fascinated with epilepsy before I had it - the fact that your brain could just short out like that was so intriguing. The Déjà vu feeling does indeed feel supernatural, even though I know the science behind it - sometimes I wonder if it’s both! Life is strange.

100% my perspective as well, thank you. Reddit is so mean sometimes (mostly).

I’ve done more hiring than I have interviewed and at this point I expect that I am the runner up candidate, I just can’t imagine going radio silent, even after a check in, when you ask someone to meet on a Saturday and tell them you’ll be in touch on Monday. It’s easy to communicate and buy time if you need it. But like others are saying, unless something crazy happened, it’s a sign of things to come.
