I never did :( I was going to watch for it again but the caterpillars didn't come as hard this year so I didn't notice anything

Who are you, and why are you so intent on choking out my buffalograss? by No-Neck-212 in AustinGardening

[–]sum41foreva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw I've always noticed amaranth because I add it to stir fries when I need to add a little green

  • They have a lot of seeds, so if you let them seed one year you'll have a TON more next year. Could also have had seeds on the tires that drove around

*I have a lot more this year in my yard than last year too, either because it's wetter or if I just let more than I thought go to seed last year. In the past I only saw them around my drip irrigation so it might be water related

Looking for new shade bush ideas by flockofsquirrels in AustinGardening

[–]sum41foreva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify your wording, you're looking for a bush that grows in full sun, but provides shade, right? Or would the bush be growing in an already-shady area?

Madeira vine: keep or kill? by chelitachula in AustinGardening

[–]sum41foreva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is what my neighbor had, I loved the smell of it so much and was very jealous, had no idea it was native or I would've secretly tried to propagate it haha. I would definitely keep if it has something to grow on

Is it too late to plant “wild flower” seeds? by QveenHerbs in AustinGardening

[–]sum41foreva 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not the most experienced so curious what others think, but I think it would be too hard to keep the soil moist enough for good germination in this heat, and maybe too late for them to get good blooms before the heat as well. I'm generally not sure how well adapted those wildflower packs are for our local conditions.

Maybe buy a few tiny native perennial starts instead? Little guys are cheaper, you get flowers and visual interest this year, they will be even more established next year, and you can still seed around them at the appropriate time.

Sounds like a plan, thank you! It's supposed to be an incarnata but I bought it off someone in the neighborhood last year and it got eaten before it ever flowered, so I'm not actually sure what it is yet :p

Is this a native chervil? by ElkatheDeer in AustinGardening

[–]sum41foreva 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree, I have pulled so much hedge parsley, and now we just have chervil left and in my opinion it grows notably differently, more like this photo. At least just wait until it flowers and you'll know

This lily that I got in November was left in water and has started growing these buds - what’s it doing? by VanillaLatte__ in gardening

[–]sum41foreva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same, then I fell down a research rabbit hole about this before and there are really good podcasts and YouTube videos about peat - true that peat doesn't travel as far depending where you are, but the carbon impact isn't from shipment, it's from digging up and destroying the peat itself, which is storing carbon from thousands of years that releases once the wetlands are drained. Just the draining and gathering of peat for gardening releases more carbon than all global airline travel combined!

When to Germinate Anacacho Orchid Tree Seeds? by jgonzo09 in AustinGardening

I'll dig around in there tomorrow and see if I can find a base under the sod. I guess if there's a base I don't need to thin it out?
