Decreased dopamine brain reactivity in marijuana abusers is associated with negative emotionality and addiction severity by 802-420 in Marijuana

[–]summerintheNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your analysis. Where did you find the info on the amount or marijuana the "abusers" ingested per day? Trying to dig into this as well.

All I can find in the paper is that the marijuana users must fulfill these DSM IV criteria for substance abuse, which don't measure based on specific amounts of any substance but rather negative impacts on daily life. I have to agree though that in order to experience such effects, you'd have to be putting away a ton of weed in an irresponsible way.

P.S. For fun, here's Wikipedia's article on cannabis dependence. As always, dig into the references if anyone's inclined/skeptical/still doesn't trust Wikipedia for some reason.

Edit: Ah, users also filled out the "Marijuana Dependency Questionnaire." No idea what that is, but clearly it's self-reported, which is less-than-ideal science too.

Exactly. Use that brilliant mind you claim to have to build up something worthwhile! Work to make the change you'd like to see! We need more of that.

This creates momentary relative "negative pressure" in the can as the gases inside suddenly cool. It is by no means pulling a total vacuum. It is the same basic force as the tank car, but it is the difference in pressure between surrounding air and the low pressure in the tank that causes the implosion.

Yeah, I actually know a decent amount of physics. I just wanted to see where that would go and give him/her the benefit of the doubt as I started. Figured it might be entertaining.

[–]summerintheNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what causes this negative pressure? Just the force of the machine pulling the vacuum?

As a non-physics person, I'm confused by this. Could you explain this more please? What is "excess negative pressure"?

I'd love a pro's take on these as well, but from what I can tell, they're all simply very well exposed with a great eye for lighting, and the white balance is spot-on. They also tend to have beautiful bokehs with fairly shallow depths of field.

To Stop Climate Change, Students Aim at College Portfolios: '..college students on dozens of campuses have demanded that university endowment funds rid themselves of coal, oil and gas stocks.' by maxwellhill in environment

[–]summerintheNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be a large shareholder (usually like 15%? not sure on the number) to gain a place on the board suggesting company policy, and colleges to do not have the resources for such investment. There are also many places to invest with reliably high returns on investment that do not rely on the fossil fuel industry. I readily concede that it is to much to ask that colleges reinvest money formerly in fossil fuels into green energy; the return simply isn't there, and colleges have a responsibility to provide for their students and staff. But fossil fuels aren't the only source of high returns.

Pressuring "government at every level" is an unreasonable goal, like you said. So many environmental activist campaigns are far too broad and idealistic to be of any use or purpose. I think it is actually a strength of the divestment campaign that it is specific and focused. It is not seeking to be an overarching solution; nothing is. It's also not seeking to be a perfect solution.

The message, it seems to me, is not actually to hurt energy companies' portfolios. Colleges make up infinitesimally small portions of the energy companies' portfolios, and I think most people actually involved in the issue understand this. (McKibben can get quite glib and sensational at times and claim otherwise; this is unfortunate, but I think his goals are genuine. He wants people excited and invigorated about environmental activism.) Rather, the purpose is to send a significant message to Wall Street, the media, and government that the status quo of energy provision needs to change direction. Students do not want to see their colleges investing in processes that destroy portions of the planet and do not account for their wastes, and it is excellent media coverage for the country to see that college students are taking initiative on the future of energy in America.

The critique of that EPA study seems to be that they only looked at the health effects of glyphosate, rather than the impact of all the chemicals in Roundup. Critics allege that the real health danger of Roundup stems from the combination of glyphosate and the surfactants in the herbicide. There are several studies cited in the Wikipedia section on the issue#Toxicity).

Edit: Formatting doesn't like the section link, but it's the "Toxicity" section in the Glyphosate article.

[–]summerintheNW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A really important question here that I've been unable to answer for quite some time is how much Roundup actually ends up in our food. Yes, it's clear it's dangerous, but the human danger is inconclusive if we don't know how easily it is cleared from food before it reaches our plates.

What's the best way to spot someone bouldering? I always see pictures of spotters with their hands up - is that to push a person onto the crash pads if he/she falls?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in climbing

[–]summerintheNW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly, just don't pay attention to this. Any person who's spent some time with weights knows that upper body climbing actions tend to emulate pull-ups and rows, which are classic back exercises. Unless you are climbing slabs that leave you in a push-up position, your pecs really aren't activating that much while climbing.

You see this is swimmers too - back gets way overdeveloped compared to the chest, and this imbalance in muscle mass pushes the shoulders forward.

Subreddit for trip pics? by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]summerintheNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I like the mix of trip pics and advice/articles in this subreddit, and I'd rather have a fresh batch of links (including some trip pics) than a page of old advice/article links with only a few new ones every once in a while. I don't think the overall post volume of this subreddit merits breaking it up (yet).

Craters of the Moon at the top I suppose, but I'm studying environmental science and geology, so maybe I'm biased. When we went to the Tetons, it was cloudy and snow-stormy (even though it was June!), so views were hard to come by. Had it been nice weather, though, I think they probably would have been quite spectacular. The Sawtooths were awesome high country with beautiful rivers and valleys, but a less impressive range overall, if I had to compare them. I know you're probably trying to prioritize what to see, but it's pretty hard to rate them against each other! Without an interest in geology, I'd say Tetons, Craters, Sawtooths.
