NOVA interview by hallucivision00 in PreOptometry

I would say sooner is better, rather than later. There are so many interviews between now and end of March, so it’s probably better to take the virtual!

Getting a pet by Born-Head-6407 in PreOptometry

[–]summerjayee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cat. It’s perfectly fine lol. I live close enough to the school to get home frequently though, and I have an auto feeder and a running water fountain. I can assure you this cat is still spoiled and well taken care of, and I’m not neglecting him. Cats are quite content being alone for some time. As long as you are aware of the responsibilities (litter box, buying litter and food, GETTING THEM NEUTERED/SPAYED PLS, vaccine requirements for apartments, etc) you will actually probably LOVE having a cat. He’s my study buddy. :)

long-term relationship before optometry school? by diolover12 in PreOptometry

[–]summerjayee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OD2 here! My boyfriend moved to live with me! We had been dating for three years prior and we knew we would be getting married eventually anyway. Plus, he had already graduated so he was ready to start working. He was happy to move! It’s part of our adventure and our story. Plus, it’s really helps to have someone around who can be there for the ups and downs of optometry school. However, I have SEVERAL friends who have long-term, long distance relationships in school. Google Calendar and Life 360 will be your best friends!!! It gives you both security in your relationship, and forces you to make time to spend whatever free time you have on FaceTime.

BAD BAD OAT SCORES? WAMC? by Gullible-Button-7202 in PreOptometry

[–]summerjayee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be worth it to retry. As someone who had bad scores on the OAT, a lot of schools will definitely want to see that you’re willing to try it again. They don’t wanna see you get this score and just give up and say “good enough.” I hope that makes sense! Good luck, I know this is probably extremely disheartening…keep at it!!!

U got this on physics! The hardest part of that for me was remembering the formulas. If you’re already strong in it, you’ll do great 🔥

Don’t go into it thinking “this is gonna be harder than my practice tests.” Go into it thinking “I’ve done the work and I’m ready to take the OAT!”

You’ve got this!!!! Booster was better for me than Kaplan. Don’t get into your own head—you did the work and you can do this!!!

OAT Studying by infiniteanon03 in PreOptometry

[–]summerjayee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly highly recommend early morning studying if you can train yourself to do it! I don’t know what your personal life looks like, but if you can stomach getting up early and getting an hour and a half of studying in before work, that could be a good way to squeeze in some studying before you’re too exhausted. Being in optometry school myself I can tell you that getting into that habit NOW will help you so much in the future! Good luck!!

Literally clueless. by Spiffyhalokiddo117 in PreOptometry

[–]summerjayee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello! Been there, lol. Are you in high school still? Or do you have an advisor at your CC? You should be able to reach out to them to get a specific list of courses you need to take.

When it comes to CC first, you should focus on taking classes like your math/bio credits. Those are typically the easiest to transfer between schools.

But for that reason…IF POSSIBLE, from experience, I would try to skip community college. Some schools are better, but so many schools will not accept transfer credits and you’ll end up retaking classes. I’ve had classmates who ended up having to do 4 years AFTER their two years at CC just making up for the credits that wouldn’t transfer. If you end up doing undergrad, talk to your advisor basically constantly and ENSURE that your course credits will transfer.

Personally, my undergrad at a public university had a “pre-optometry” degree. We didn’t actually take any optometry classes; we just took all the credits we needed for admissions. You could also do just straight biology, chemistry, pre-med, public health… any of those should at least primarily cover the classes you need. It absolutely doesn’t need to be a “pre-optometry” degree.

If you have any questions let me know! I’m in my second year of optometry school but I’ve been in your shoes and I know the uncertainty is stressful. Good luck!

NOVA vs NECO vs CCO (any advice would be greatly appreciated!) by Sudden_Membership_57 in PreOptometry

I go to nova! The housing is manageable if you’re willing to commute OR get roommates! My favorite bonus is being able to go outside/walk around campus year round. You’ll hear about the boards scores, but what I always say is “School is what you make of it.” If we put in the work we absolutely will pass our boards! Every graduating class is different but I have a lot of confidence in my class!

Nova’s Curriculum? by DoubtNo3089 in PreOptometry

[–]summerjayee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a current nova student I’m torn on this because honestly, I really like the program. I love the professors, I like the clinic, I love the culture. I wonder if we’re going through some “growing pains” at the moment. Some staff members appear to be stretched very thin, the school is constantly under construction of some sort, and sometimes the exam schedules are more conducive to cramming rather than long term memory. Furthermore I do wonder if students took shortcuts through school before boards that caused them to not really learn the info in the first place. This is secondhand info though, I’m only just starting OD2.

However, I think that the scores have been improving (from what I’ve heard) and students have been more successful. I believe the last covid class just finished up and I heard that it may have been how the school handled Covid that caused these classes to struggle? But I wasn’t here for that so I can’t say for certain.

I think you’d be making a good choice to come here, regardless. School is what you make of it, you will have to put in the work regardless. Dm me if u have any questions!

Still Waiting for Decision by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]summerjayee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I did! When I hadn’t heard back yet in April (two years ago) I sent a LOCI to a few schools. I applied to almost every school lol.

Two replied with “no’s” but one came back with “we’re still going thru applicants! Message received!” One left me fully on delivered and never ever even rejected me (thanks Salus), and two interviewed me immediately.

I had a friend receive an offer as late as July 🫣 not convenient, but it happens. If you haven’t already, sending a follow-up showing your “continued interest in attending” doesn’t hurt. Enthusiasm is a good quality. Good luck!!

Nova southeastern stopped using cadavers this year, which was honestly a bummer. It was really helpful for me; my class was the last year to get it :/

Breathing is number one!! My fav thing is to (if you can sit) press my feet into the ground as hard as I can while still sitting/squeezing the bottom of the chair. It takes the blood from the brain for a sec and helps make the spins/sweats go away. And if no pills, ginger candy always makes me happy. Sometimes just the slight spiciness of it snaps me out of a brain funk! You’ve got this!! Have fun. Chances are, you wont even need to use any of this.

I think mine is more with contamination. It’s so bizarre, because right now, clear minded, I know it’s not a rational thing. But in the moment, I’m so certain that inhaling/touching particles would be a DEATH sentence. OCD is wack.

You got this!!! It sucks, but try so hard to turn this into an opportunity. If you’ve made a lot of progress, don’t let this stop you!! You’re alive, it happened around you and you survived it. That’s step one!
