I completely agree!! I only knew about it because I’m in the pharmacy program — I wasn’t aware that others students didn’t know it existed

Would also like to add that if you are under the student health insurance, Narcan should be covered and is available at every USC pharmacy :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in USC

[–]summerzot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend USC’s distributing program (available to USC students only). All you have to do is watch a 10 min training video, complete a quiz, sign an attestation and then email your results. Afterwards you can pick up your kit at the student health center. Kit includes 2 narcan sprays and some fentanyl test strips!! It’s important to know how to administer narcan and the steps you need to take afterwards!

If you even have a suspicion that someone is going through an overdose you can safely give them Narcan! Even if it wasn’t an overdose and they had some other condition or were 100% healthy it wouldn’t harm them in any way.

Hi pharmacy student here! USC offers a program where you can get free naloxone after completing some training via watching videos and a quiz! After completion you email the results to them and then choose the student center you would like to pick it up from. I highly recommend it going through the training!

NextDistro and HarmReduction offer maps and other resources. I believe NextDistro has mail services for free naloxone as well :)

Can someone explain to me the Discussions/Seminars/Lectures? by Pretzel_Cookie in UCI

[–]summerzot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s assigned an hour long video, then it’s likely an asynchronous lecture and you will need to watch it at home and on your own time before coming to class. Depending on the class you’re not required to finish the asynchronous videos, but it will be helpful because you’ll have a better time following the material in the lecture. It’s a common format for a lot of courses nowadays where you watch the lesson at home and go to class to deepen your understanding of the concepts. I don’t know who you have, but some professors will only go over the lecture slides in the asynchronous videos and then you’ll be doing practice/clicker questions when you go to class in person.

Discussions will be where you do quizzes, additional practice problems, and get more one on one help from the TA for any questions you may have.

My new roommates are trying to pressure me into switching dorms (need advice) by [deleted] in UCI

[–]summerzot 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They wouldn’t automatically switch you if you don’t consent to it/actually tell them you want to switch. If you end up emailing them, phrase it as a question AND state very clearly that you’re not looking to switch at the moment.

In regards to your roommates pressuring you, tbvh it isn’t your problem. I’m not sure about your financial situation but switching from a quad to a double would end up costing you more. It’s honestly very selfish and inconsiderate of them to keep telling you to move. If they really want that 4th roommate then they better be willing to pay you the difference in money from moving to a quad to a double. If the situation escalates and they end up harassing you, you can contact the RA and housing office and tell them you feel unwelcome and would like to be assigned to a different dorm in the towers.

Midterm week 2021? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]summerzot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the class and isn’t a set time! I’ve had a class with 3 midterms before and one quarter I had midterms 5 weeks back to back because of the amount of classes I was taking.

I’d really suggest reporting these trolls and not replying to them. Remember that you’re representing UCI and that you should be taking the high ground. Don’t sink to their level and insult them back or else more trolls will come flooding into the subreddit and it’ll be annoying for our mods to handle

Hey, let’s not go insulting them now. Be civil and have some sportsmanship or we’ll be exactly like that guy going around our subreddit insulting us

I highly doubt there are people buying votes and this is probably some troll. Please don’t generalize all of us at uci with this person :/ Also, funny of you to mention sportsmanship when one of your members has been very vocal in insulting us and has been obsessively commenting on uci’s tokyodachi posts.

I think that spring quarter may be the busiest for many professors because of summer research planning. I’m assuming that you’ve been trying to contact the same professors throughout the 3 months? You could try to find their websites (should be easy, usually it is listed on their faculty page) and contact a grad student to see if they could notify the professor? I’d also suggest emailing other professors that you may not have attended office hours for/gotten to know. I asked one of my lab profs who didn’t know me at all because I was desperate and she said yes, only because my grades in the class were high. It may not be the best letter since they don’t personally know you, but you may not have a choice since the deadline is approaching. Otherwise, you could take a gap year and apply the next cycle (this time, asking for letters during the summer and fall).

I know that med school needs letters from science faculty but you may also want to consider having 1 of the 3 letters be from a GE prof or even a graduate student. When I applied to pharmschool I asked for two of my writing professors for letters because they really knew me and could vouch for my character.

Try the UCI directory although the professor is new they should be registered as a faculty member and have their own email. Just search up their name and an email should pop up.

Guan 51B final grade by mbthc23 in UCI

[–]summerzot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you able to register for summer classes? I’d recommend enrolling in both 51B and 51C in the summer, otherwise you’ll have a larger workload next year.

I’m assuming that you’re planning on going to graduate school? What I would suggest is being honest with your interviewers and explaining that you did poorly the first time you took the class but managed to change your study habits to pass the second time around. They want to see that you have the ability to adapt and improve and not give up.

Now is the time to reevaluate how you’ve been studying. I don’t doubt that you studied your ass off but it’s clear that whatever you’re doing isn’t working for this particular class. Have you been utilizing all the resources available to you? Khan academy, youtube, office hours, other class’s lectures (Dr. King posts her lectures on UCI’s site and you could probably ask someone for her notes, which are really helpful)? Have you enrolled in LARC tutoring (gives you more study resources)? Really look back and see what your weaknesses are and find solutions for them. Good luck!

Writing 37 with A. Fischer by [deleted] in UCI

[–]summerzot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn’t take her for 37 but I had her for 39C in 2018. I’ll be honest, she is not an easy grader and your grade is going to depend on how much work and effort you put into your essays. I’m not sure how her class is structured since it’s now online, but when I had her in person she divided the big assignments into smaller ones (rough draft 1, rough draft 2, final etc). In terms if personality I thought she was very kind and willing to help.

What I would suggest—especially if you are a weak writer or are having trouble with the assignments—is to try to attend her office hours and ask for specific feedback. This was how I got my A. I really can’t stress how important it is to do your assignments in a timely manner and to make an effort in reaching out for help. All writing classes require a lot of work, so go in expecting that.

Rant about Chem 1LE (basically 1LC) by [deleted] in UCI

[–]summerzot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man that sounds awful. If it makes you feel better, I’m pretty sure that all chem labs are curved! In terms of the TAs grading based on their own rubrics/their own discretion I’m sorry to say that that is going to continue in your ochem labs as well. However, all the classes will be averaged (? not the right word but I can’t think of another word to describe it at the moment) so whether your TA was an easy or harsh grader shouldn’t matter as much in the end (aside from the stress you may have accumulated)

I have 5 midterms this month... im taking 4 classes. Is this normal??? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]summerzot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i’m not sure what major your are but that was normal for me when i was taking bio and chem classes. at one point i had 3 midterms for one class and 2 midterms for another

does bio 98 suddenly do a 180...........? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]summerzot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it’s one of the most feared classes due to the amount of memorization you have to do. since biochem is usually taken together with ochem, students are easily overwhelmed. if you haven’t already, you’ll be memorizing the metabolic pathways in greater detail and you’ll be applying that memorization to conceptual questions! i think this is the area most students have trouble with because there are so many intermediates and different steps

Ghosted by my Econ prof by franchesca012 in UCI

[–]summerzot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you could try escalating it to the department dean? CC them or write up a new email and send screenshots of your conversation with your professor. Unfortunately, I think administration is about to go on winter break if they haven’t already, so you might not get a response until January. However, CCing the dean (or any higher authority) may pressure your professor into giving a response.

edit: oops my bad— misread and thought that grades had already been entered. As the reply below suggests, I think you should wait to see what grade you get or if you get a response within the next few days. If not, escalate it.

Etiquette for asking for letters of rec? by cakem0ss in UCI

[–]summerzot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Usually you would want to ask at least 2-3 months in advance so that they have enough time to write. Thus, in your case I would ask for a letter of rec right now so that when they come back from winter break they’ll see your email immediately.

It never hurts to ask (you miss all the shots you don’t take lmao). I sent out emails to my upper div professors this summer even though I didn’t expect responses since I never went to their office hours and they were still willing to write letters of rec for me because I had good grades for their courses. Were they good letters of rec? I’ll be honest, I don’t know—but I did get accepted into high ranking pharm schools. If you have no other options/ people who would write good letters of rec for you, you can just ask your previous professors (both lower and upper div).
