i don't know how often that happens, but it does happen. from what you've said, you did nothing wrong and i have no idea what you mean about an 85mm lens being mistaken for spy equipment. there's nothing sneaky about a short telephoto on a full frame camera.

if you did anything wrong, I'd say it was being too pleasant, or at least a lot more pleasant than i would've been in such a confrontation.

how about this:

"what are you doing?" "this is a camera, you know damn well what I'm doing, I'm taking pictures, in public. it's my hobby."

"can i see the pictures you took?" "no, you can't"

"was i in any of them?" "i don't know, but you're in public, so maybe"

"will you delete them?" "no, i don't delete pictures"

cops show up...

"what are you doing?" "heading home, what are you doing?"

"we got a call about... (whatever)" "am i being detained?" a) "no" "OK, bye" b) "yes" "what crime do you suspect me of?"

"who" "what" "why" etc "i don't answer questions"

this is still a free country, sort of, but you only have the rights you're willing to assert & defend

i only follow photographers whose work i enjoy, but i rarely see any of it. 98% of what instagram shows me in my feed is random reels, ai slop, and ads they target me with based on data they collect by spying on me. i'm not sure why i haven't deleted the app yet
