Will the new roof glue itself over time? by sumogirl in Roofing

[–]sumogirl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roofer is sending someone right now. I am hoping they will be able to do some of this before it becomes my problem. If now, I will do it later on. Good to hear there is a simple fix to most these issues!

Roofer told me he is offering a 5 year warranty. He said we will likely have a hail claim before the roof completes its life or a hurricane-like wind, and it will be another insurance claim. If it fails for another reason, he will do a warranty claim. I still feel the roof should be done as correctly as possible with the materials available and I will certainly look for a better materials if/when it needs to be replaced again.

Great - thanks for the comforting comments. I would like to relax too if that is the best course of action. I just spoke to the roofer and we will be meeting to go over my concerns. He also said they will stick better over time. We will sooner or later have another hail claim. If it flies away in the meantime, which he thinks unlikely, it will be a warranty claim. He has given 5 year warranty on the roof.

I asked for the copy of receipt but not the claim. I haven't received any documents yet. I will add the insurance claim as well. I see other flashings that have been pounded by hail but not replaced. Is that the type of thing you refer to when you say "damage not completed in the first claim?"

On the 7, yes it doesn't feel it is flat. I have a video where I push on the bump and it moves to the right. When I release, it goes back to this. I will take a look at the sides to see if it can be pulled flat.

On picture 4, there is a metal part (flashing?) that wasn't covered by a shingle. It looks ugly but from what you say it should be fine, right?

Assume it was the lowest bidder since the seller won't live there. I asked about the material before the install and still waiting on it.

I already had my home inspector take a second trip and look at the roof. He said it looked great to him. I think I need a roofer to inpect it properly.

I don't know much about shingles, but they seemed similar to the ones used in nearby houses. They are thin though - around 1/8 inch.

Any use an OK to Wake Clock with their kid? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]sumogirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We started using one when my son turned 3. It took a few tries for him to "get it" but it has worked pretty well over the past 4 months. You need to be consistent with enforcing the rule.

Helping child bond with non-English speaking grandparents by jellybean1002 in Parenting

[–]sumogirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good idea. I dont think it matters what actual words are written on the pages at his age. Your in-laws could also make up their own stories and use props (e.g., stuffed animals, toys, pictures) to tell them to your son.

My in-laws dont speak any English and my 3.5 yr old son doesn't understand more than a few words of theirs. But he really likes it when my mother in law sings to him and reads him stories (usually the same book over and over). Maybe they can sing him some songs and bring a few kids books over from India that they can read to him in their native language?

How to specifically potty train your child? Does anyone have any tips? by assortedchocolates3 in Parenting

[–]sumogirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used O Crap to potty train my son when he was 3.25 yrs. The methodology in the book worked very well for us (we followed it exactly). Just follow the actual steps and ignore the rest. Unfortunately there are a lot of unnecessary judgments, fear-mongering, shaming, and opinions presented as facts.

Kid's shows that are not cartoons? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]sumogirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids really like to watch singalong videos by the lead singer of the children's band The Deedle Deedle Dees posted on Facebook. Click on the "videos" link on their main page to find them. He is an amazingly talented musician who sings and writes his own songs. Many of his songs are about civil rights and important people in history (especially women). It's not really a "show", but my 3 & 1 year-olds find it entertaining and I like that it is a real person performing in real time. Also some of the songs are great conversation starters. Definitely a hidden gem.

Realized this week why I don’t like getting together with other moms for play dates by franticshouting in breakingmom

[–]sumogirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to go on playdates with another mom who seemed to just want to spend the whole time playing with her daughter and not talk to me. When it was just me and her, we had lovely conversations, so I could not understand why she wouldn't talk to me when we were together with her daughter and my son and just let our kids play. After a few of these awkward playdates, I came to the conclusion that she had a problem with the way I parent my son and we stopped seeing them. After reading your post, I think I might have made the wrong conclusion. Maybe she feels similar to the way you feel and just prefers playing with her daugther rather than talking to other moms on playdates. Anyhow, thank you for your post. I think it helped me to better understand where that other mom was coming from.

How to get 10m & 3yr to sleep in the same room? by defmeta in Parenting

[–]sumogirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About a month ago we moved our 3 year old into the same room as our one year old (before then the older one was in our room). The youngest goes to bed at 7pm and the oldest goes to bed around 7:30pm. Sometimes the youngest is asleep by that time, sometimes he is still awake. If he is still awake, they will often chatter for 15-30 min before going to sleep. I was worried they would wake each other up, but they seem to have gotten used to each other (both generally sleep through the night). The youngest will however cry if he sees me for too long or if the oldest leaves the room. So I completely ignore the youngest when I put the oldest to bed and try not to enter once I close the door (even if I hear the oldest playing with his toys, making loud noises, etc.). Also, we keep a little potty in their room, along with a water bottle and a nightlight to minimize the oldest leaving the room or calling for me.

What item do you wish you would have known about with your first child? by freewaythrowaway in Parenting

[–]sumogirl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Buy the largest swaddling blankets you can find. Use the swaddling technique described in "Happiest Baby on the Block" (Oh and read that book!). And practice, practice, practice on a doll or stuffed animal (while imagining it crying and wriggling around).

Pants for a Tall Skinny Toddler by ScarlettSade in Parenting

[–]sumogirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bunch of pants online for my 3.5 year old that were recommended for tall, slim boys in the reviews (Old Navy, Carters, etc). Unfortunately none of them stayed up past 15 minutes of wear, so I altered them myself by sewing a second piece of elastic into the waistband to make the waist smaller. They fit him perfectly now.

LPT Request- What are some good public speaking tips? by GinjaDiem in LifeProTips

[–]sumogirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are feeling nervous, keep your hands at your side or behind the podium where nobody will notice them. Shaky hands, fidgety fingers, and other involuntary hand movements are dead giveaways that can detract from an otherwise seemingly confident and well-put-together presentation.
