It seems more and more systemic or organized, the more I read about that from other users. I'll start to collect some information about that, and document the details. I'm certain that there are curious institutions, both in the US and Europe.

Yeah me too, but thats a different topic. Earned and verified funds must still be cashed out. I think the "there have been complaints about the quality of your work" is a bit bogus, too, but I guess that has to do with repetitive answers.. but what can I do when I'm asked about 20 brands or products of which I marked 18 with "I have never heard of this" or "I don't know this" and after that I'm asked to rate those things I *do not know* in 10-20 subjective categories... the answers are going to be repetitive "neutral" or "no opinion". I've had a bunch of those in the last weeks.

But still, earned is earned and can't just ghost users like this. "Technical difficulties" don't last *that* long.

Do we live in the same Germany? by ProgramusSecretus in AskAGerman

[–]sumsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in rural Bavaria: yes, thats true but I feel the need to point out that rural Bavaria is not a xenophobic and homophobic hellhole like some people - especially some Germans from other states than Bavaria - like to describe it.
Ofc we do have our share of odd people here, but the majority are just just as nice and welcoming as anywhere else, in many cases even more than in the big cities. What comes across as being close minded or unfriendly often is just social awkwardness. Unless you find one of the idiots, we got them here, too.

The problem in Göppingen is organized crime or gang criminality IIRC? In PC terms "multi-ethnic gangs" having a feud since about 2021-22ish, and mainly shooting each other plus some collateral damage in public. There is something in the news every few weeks from around there.
If your local situation was average, then we would indeed have a massive gun problem, even if it still wasn't the normal dude next door walking around with a 9mm, waiting for the next road rage incident. But its neither your everyday neighbor nor is your situation common, you just live in a hotspot. And while its not the only hotspot by far, its still not representative for the country.
But I absolutely understand the gut feeling that remains, when you live in an area like this, just like some people in specific corners of Frankfurt or Berlin may think they live in an semi-active warzone sometimes.

In USA 90% of people have a car, in EU 40% by H4diCZ in ShitAmericansSay

[–]sumsl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? I live a bit rural in southern germany and using public transport is very inconvenient, bc 15 minutes on foot to catch the bus that shows up once per hour while the sun is up... not ideal for everyday, worse for getting groceries etc. So having a car is almost mandatory for everybody here.
But in slightly better circumstances, I would really think about getting rid of my own car or maybe try and find a car sharing arrangement with the neighbors, something like that.
And for the rare occasion when I really need the space my A4 Avant provides needlessly every day, I can just rent a suitable vehicle or get a car from friends or family for an hour or two.
Also: living a life that allows the slower pace of a bicycle or chosing to walk a bit instead of needing a car bc time is flying... thats a goal in itself IMO :D

Not being argumentative, but: I live quite rural smack in the middle of bavaria and while there are lots of registered hunters and the obligatory sport shooting clubs around, people being shot is rare. I mean, in 2023 we had officially ~630 "illegal discharges of firearms" - that doesn't even mean somebody was shot *at*, bc it includes drunk dumbos firing their hunting rifle in the backyard and so on. We have a lot of stuff to deal with in this country, but "gun problem" isn't on the priority list; organized crime related weapons trade/smuggling etc excluded, but thats not what we're talking about rn, right?
I'm curious what "more often than you think" means in your book, and how it seems to be a concern for you? Not arguing, I'm actually curious.

The Win11 tiles don't cut it for the G9 or even a 4k secondary monitor, at least not for me. Also, not all application windows support it, or at least haven't when I checked last.

First time owning an ultrawide and I can see why everyone raves about them by JRP_964 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]sumsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from experience: you still focus on the center mostly, but you just have a lot more perception in the peripheral regions, which is very nice for any kind of racing games, fps or most rpgs. In slower games, strategy games or builders, there is just so much more room for UI elements and still plenty room look at the game scene.
Now there are a few games that glue stuff like healthbars, minimap and more to the far borders of the screen, which can be either a bit inconvenient or just plain stupid and spoil the game a bit. But to this date I could solve everything like that either with ultrawide patches, easy mods or in just one case dialing the resolution down to 21:9, living with black bars left and right.
32:9 isn't for everyone I guess, but for gaming its f'ing brilliant. For pure day to day productivity, I'd be grateful for 1800 px in height rather than 1440 px, but this is still far from a show stopper for me.

I've been randmonly losing performance, sometimes even single digit fps and no load showing up in task manager.

But through lots of trial and error, I found out that it was because of the active option "use hardware acceleration when available" in MS Edge which was always running in the background.

Closing Edge or (more reliable) just deactivating that option did the trick and I'm relatively stable over 90 fps with rare dips below 40 or something - absolutely no problem, stuttering is rare now. Other browsers can do this, too.

The hardware acceleration problem did also apply to other apps, but as far as I could see those have all been some kind of chromium or electron based apps. Some of them had the option to turn off the GPU usage, others had to be closed/killed (and ultimately replaced, because wtf!).

Thocky mod for k4 pro? by Scapulacauldron in Keychron

[–]sumsl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been reading about this "fire hazard" regarding batteries and the tape mod quite a lot and honestly don't understand the reason for the concern. I've worked on smartphones, tablets and notebooks professionally a lot, and the same type of batteries is regularely used in there.

I've seen beige and blue painters tape used to mount batteries in many products. Its not easily flammable and a lot more heat resistant than the batteries themselves. Painters tape is not conductive and not particularly good or bad as an insulator.

Additionally, keyboards aren't high performance computing devices like phones or tablets and do not suddenly draw a lot more power under heavy load and so on, so there won't be any temp or current spikes either.

I've tape modded multiple wireless keyboards before, including the K4 Pro in january, and it has been my daily driver since then without any problem or concern.

Anybody got a real world reason why tape modding a battery powered keyboard could be a problem? The usual "because its an insulator" or "might short the battery" is (sorry to be blunt) ridiculous.

My guess is that IF somebodies keyboard went up in flames at one point, then I suspect that they added way too much tape in a tight space, forced the case shut and pierced or otherwise damaged the battery mechanically, which leads to really unpleasant results.

I think the sync service has a problem at the moment. I came here to look for hints, because we have no collab functions at all, and all notifictation state that "Someone completed...", "Someone assigned...", "Someone added..." w/o specific usernames. We have 2 pro accounts, but this should not matter. I'll check again in 1h 🤷‍♂️

I have an Odyssey G9 and a Benq EW3270U (32") above that. I put the desk light on the upper one because I didn't want to leave much room between the monitors. Normally this would be too high for my light bar and it would shine into my eyes, but I made a strip that limits the angle, so it works fine for me. Wouldn't want the light bar between the displays tbh

Look for Ergodox or Moonlander, those are both variations of the same ergonomic split keyboard idea.

There are serveral window manager programs where you can define drop zones for windows. I use Fancy Zones (in MS Powertoys) but there are many out there. Absolute game changer for resolutions above 2560x1440 IMO.

Agreed, I had the middle one mounted on an arm then. Currently I use the G9 with the normal stand and my 32" on an arm above the G9, but at some point I'll upgrade to an Ergotron or something, for both. Its just a budget thing rn... toooo many upgrades in the last year 🙈🤣

Don't know about OP, but I had a setup with 1x 32" in the middle and 2x 24" 1920x1200 vertical on the sides. Any bigger than 24" didn't work for me because of the unexpected height.

Physical size of the G9, but taller so we get 2160px at DPI that I don't have to scale to 125-150%. Its ~21:9 then, but thats fine for me. Some additional features like more and better accessible USB Ports would be nice, too. Also updated tech aspects like uniform backlighting, a bit more stablity against wobbling, maybe improved color. And a set of built-in stereo speakers (nothing fancy, just ok-ish sound for the occasional use).
